=========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1447 Tuesday March 28, 2006 More on raised notes by Joe Boling Following up on Jim Downey's column of today: when I was in Morocco 1953-55, my father, who was an Air Force OSI agent, showed me a series 481 nickel that had been raised to 50c by the simple expedient of doodling. The airman responsible traced over (filled in) the numeral "5" with a ball point pen, then added an appropriately proportioned "0" after it, also with ball point, so that it looked like a half dollar that had been played with. I don't recall whether any attempt was made to alter the word "five" to "fifty." Following up on Ski's linking of Showa dating to one Joe Boling: when Emperor Hirihoto died in late 1989, Fred called me to extend his condolences. He thought that with my long association with Japanese numismatics, I would be at least a little down that night. I was surprised to find that I was. I had not even realized it until Fred called to commiserate. Of course, Hirohoto was the Showa emperor. CPMX story - in a junk book (a book of notes at junk box prices), I found a series 521 dime that had been torn in half and taped back together - except that this note is two halves of different notes, and both are right-hand halves. The taping was done so as to put the centers of the notes together, both face up, so that one is right side up at the right, and the other, on the left, is upside down - unless you turn the whole piece 180 degrees, putting the right-side-up half on the other side, where it is now upside down. Clear as mud? Why on earth would someone cobble together pieces of different notes in such a fashion? The two serials are E03735323E and E00318495E. Because of the configuration of the note, no position number is present (that appears on the left half of a note, and there are no left halves present). But you can all calculate the position number(s), right? Not to worry - if you can't, you can go to Doug's data base, put those numbers in, and the position numbers will appear - theoretically as a quick and dirty check for counterfeits, but not applicable to the instant note. Does another 521 10c note exist composed of two left ends, neither with a serial number? I have another CPMX story, but it won't suffer from becoming a bit aged. So now, having never gotten to bed this morning, I am going to toddle off to dreamland early - it's only midnight. *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: Romulus and Remus being suckled by a wolf appear on notes for what location? Question 105, difficulty 3. Yesterday's Question: Bon de Solidarite "notes" were issued by what government? Question 104, difficulty 2. and left over from the day before and we received several responses although none of them were completely correct: Who are the receipents of military numismtics service awards (awards made at MPC Fests)? Question 103, difficulty 3. How are Free French notes for Reunion marked (identified)? Answers: see below Comments from the field: Roger Urce How about Elmer Smith, Joe Boling, Larry Smulczenski and this year's recipient Marv Mericle.  Jim Champ Downey wrote: The recipients of the Military Numismatics Service Award are Larry Smulczenski, Neil Shafer and Marv Mericle. Geroge Fitzgerald wrote that he remembers: Marvin Mericle, Larry Ski, Elmer Smith, and Joe Bolling. [Ok, the ones that I remember (all of them, in order) are Elmer Smith, Larry Smulczenski, Joe Boling, Neil Shafter, and Marv Mericle. The lack of memory on these points out two things that HQ will have to do. We need to create a permanant award with the receipents names affixed. Secondly, we need to be sure that we give prominent listing of the names in the military numismatics books (Remembered and CCMPC)--Ed] Roger Urce also wrote regarding the Reunion question: on page 155 of the "BOOK," it says "The notes are the same as the Vichy issue but the Free French issues have two crosses of Lorraine instead of the two axes" Doesn't that give the Free French notes of Reunion an identification? [Roger gets bonus points becaues he is absolutely correct. That is what I get for creating the questions on the fly. The local issue that Roger mentions was not what I was thinking of when I entered the question, but he is correct. The local Free French issue has the Cross of Loraine. The general Free French issue Cassaie Central de la Fance Libre and ...Outre Mer for reunion can only be identified by serial number. Way to go Roger.--Ed] Redarding Question 104 Jim Downey wrote : Bons de Solidaite were issued by the Vichy French. Question 102: Bill Myers wrote that Bon de Solidarite notes were issued by the French Vichy government by the French Red Cross central committee for aiding POWs, refugees, wounded and other needy people. They are receipts for donations Vichy government was what I was looking for. Sometimes extra info gets people into trouble, but this time it was ok. I must admit again that I was creating the question on the fly and I knew that this was not a great question because I would probably have to accept France based upon the way that the question was phrased. See below.--Ed] Rick Nickles wrote: answer to today's question is FRANCE (see above) and he also asked "how do you play the trivia game??" [See editorial] ========================================== Editorial ========================================== Rick Nickles question proves that we need to review things now and then. First, Rick, trivia--I DONT THINK SO--this is important historic and numismatic information! (smile). OK, trivia. The best and only real way to play the game is to come to the Fest. There we play March Madness in the style of a television quiz game. Everyone in attendance is seeded in brackets and play head to head to make the final four. Those four then compete on Saturday evening for the title of champion. We do not have an exact name for the award, but one will no doubt develop. One year everyone played a little counter game and performed terribly on the questions. They did this to manipulate your humble editor into running the questions in the Gram so that they could prepare for the next year. It worked. As with most of what we do there are no rules so we run the questions and some folks like to write in with the answer and we like that much better than simply listing the answer. You could do it for the glory or at least for the good of the community and personal growth. Thanks for writing with an answer and a question. We hope to see you at the Fest next year. ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Editor, In MPCGram 1445, Joe used the phrase "For Pete's sake." You asked: Who's Pete? This phrase is an example of a "minced oath", a substitution of a less offensive word. "For Pete's sake" is simply a polite version of a common and profane _expression involving the name of Christ. The original 'Pete' in this case was St. Peter. >From Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins. David Klinger Dear Gramsters......Bought a nice car again. Want to sell a few notes!
