MPC is no exception to this. It is true that the early series are rather dull and uninteresting, but the later issues are attractive. Particularly attractive are the women that appear on some of the later series. Collectors were not the only people who were interested in the vignettes that appeared on MPC. The following article appeared in the April 28, 1968 edition of Pacific Stars & Stripes. Although it does not contain any new information, it is interesting to note that the users of MPC had some of the same questions that collectors have. It appears that they were disappointed with the answers, however. MPC Gals ‘Nobodies’ TOKYO (S&S) – Can’t place the face? Well here’s the revelation. If anyone asks the names of the dames on the military pay- ment certificates (MPC), the answer is Misses Nobody. The disgruntling fact is, Army comptrollers reveal, those love- ly gals on the $1, $5 and $10 bills do not, and have never existed. From the dreamy young queen of the $1 to the regal dame on the $10, the faces are merely prototypes, chosen from Bureau of Printing and Engraving cuts to discourage counterfeiting. Any resemblance between these girls and any living per- son is coincidental. A real lady has never adorned the military dollar, with the pos- sible exception of the first MPC issue in 1946 which was impos- sible to verify. MPC is used today by serv- icemen in Japan, Korea, Viet- nam and Libya. Only Vietnam still uses MPC notes in place of U.S. silver coins. The present Series, the eighth, was issued in January 1964. Series are usual- ly changed about every four years. It is odd that they could not verify the information concerning Series 461 which does not have a woman pictured on it. Apparently, the author’s sources did not have any pictures of Series 461. Since they verified that Series 471 also did not have a “real lady” on it the sources also did not know that the designs of Series 461 and Series 471 are identical. *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: What series of MPC is known to have had full packs of 100 notes find their way into colllector's hands? Question 121, difficulty 2. Yesterday's Question: What military numismatics collectible was isssued in the Netherlands as a result of Status of Forces of agreements steming from World War II? Question 120, difficulty 3. Comments from the field: Question 120, Bill Myers wrote 1,5,25 Gulden Ministerie Van Oorlog notes. [cool, I was caught off guard by this answer and would also have been at March Madness I believe. I also belive that Bill sent in this wrong answer to make us think. The correct answer is AAFES Gasoline Coupons. The key point is that the Ministerie van Oorlog notes were not issued in the Netherlands. They were issued in Germany. There is one slight additional twist/problem. The Dutch coupons were also sold (issued) in Germany (and other NATO countries for that matter). Still I think that the question is satisfactory and the answer should be as given. If there are any arguments, let us have them now! That is one purpose for this question corner.--Ed] ========================================== Editorial ========================================== Busted. I have put it off as long as I could. I have mentioned several times about downsizing our warehouse. When I work on the warehouse I can wear only clothing approved by the headquarters commandant. It is a very strict rule. I put on the prescribed uniform and headed for the warehouse. I stopped at Fest Headquarters (the Holiday Inn Express) for some 2007 coordination. I could not belive it when the maintenance man challenged me with his Fest coin immediately upon entering the building! Yes, I had the prescribed uniform but NOT my challenge coin. Disgraced. To make matters worse, I continued to the warehouse where Cuneyd Tolek was waiting (I had put him to work too). He promptly challenged me. I failed two challenges in 15 minutes in my hometown. I have stated many times that the only way to be challenge proof is to carry your coin always. You never know when you will need it. ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, I have not received a Gram in a few months. Howard Daniel Dear Gram, I just wanted to make a comment that Jim White ( 2006 Fest attendee) was one of a recent group of very distinguished people portrayed in Numismatic News in a group photo in a recent issue. Jim and the rest of the group were pictured with the governor of Oklahoma , Brad Henry at a recent meeting to pick out a design for the up coming 2008 Okla quarter. I don't want to start any rumors :-) but it cost me dearly to have the initials sjf (sammy joe feeback) inserted in micro mini letters somewhere on the oil derrick. The question will be ? Will the initials jsw (james s white) be above or below mine? :-) What does any of this have to do with military numismatics? My friend Jim White was in the USMC during world war ll and was sent to Okinawa where he was wounded 3 different times. Another time he was serving as a runner and a jap tried to stop his running activity , but only suceeded in ruining a whole carton of cigarettes. It was Jim who stopped the japs activity with an m-1 carbine. Jim is a numismatist ( coin collector) and was definitely military . I am very gratefull to call Jim White my friend , and he is one of the best open sight rifle shooters I have known in my life, if not the very best. He has competed at Camp Perry (Port Clinton) about 17 times. Sam Feeback Dear Gram, Regarding Joe's report: I find your study of circulating paper money interesting. I came into possion of quite a few 1950 $10's a while back. I have a couple local banks who save old bills for me. I saved the best and spent the rest. The intersting part is in the spending. The store clerks have already forgotten about the older series of notes and what is genuine. I fould that in the outlying areas of Texas they would study them hold them up to the light, think for a long time about wether to take them or not!! Some would run the counterfiet pen across and declare "this one may be a fake" as the ink indicator was positive. In the end they all took them as cash. In the city they took them without much fuss. -John Cheney ========================================== Calendar =========================================== 2006 The London Paper Money Fair has moved to: Victory Services Club, 63 Seymour Street, off Edgware Road, Marble Arch London and the dates are: July 2 and Nov 26. see: www.britishnotes.co.uk or www.londonpapermoneyfair.co.uk June 1-3 Long Beach, mini fest to be announced 16-18 June Memphis 1-14 July ANA summer seminar 16-20 August ANA convention, Denver September 14th-16th, Long Beach, mini fest to be annuonced The World Paper Money Fair, organised by the London chapter of the IBNS will be September 30/October 1 at the new venue: Hotel Russell, Russell Square, Bloomsbury, London.  see: www.ibnslondon.org.uk Oct/Nov Pcda St Louis ========================================== for dealer Hot Contact list, ANA MPC museum holdings and other static information please click this link: http://www.papermoneyworld.net/Gramattichments.htm ========================================== 2006 scholarship fund Donations of cash and numismatic material will be gladly accepted.
