Congratulations, Dick. I have been blessed for several years with NOT having the Indianapolis 500 clutter up my Memorial Day weekend. This was my last such year - unless I skip town, in the future I will have the race to contend with. Last weekend I was over in Idaho for a nephew's wedding. While there, my brother took me to visit a family that had several trays of 35mm slides and two photo albums that had been assembled by their father, LtJG Clinton L. Sept, during 1945-49 in the Pacific. They had called my brother, who had called me, asking where they might find a home for these. I told John that under no circumstances should they discard these materials - and they are now sitting a few feet away from me. I have not had time to go through the slides yet, but I will certainly be looking for new images for the next edition of WWII Remembered. After mustering out, this fellow got a job as a contractor with Philco. One of the albums illustrates a Pacific tour through Hong Kong, Shanghai, Peiping, Okinawa, and Guam. In most locations he put a map and clippings from tour books into his album - and paper money. While in China in May 1948, customs gold units were trading at 20:1 against CNC yuan (a 250 CGU note was worth 5000 yuan). He has a stack of notes inserted in the book marked "$126,000 - or 12 cents" (the exchange rate at that time being 1,550,000 yuan to the dollar). On his Shanghai hotel bill is a rubber stamp saying "CN$1 should be read CN$1,000." In other words, his room rate, recorded as 4500 yuan/day, was actually 4,500,000 yuan ($2.90) per day (which probably seemed pretty steep at the time). That was for this week, fifty-eight years ago - 27-31 May 1948. I love this kind of contemporary documentation. *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: What figure is on the (British printed) 5000 franc AMC? Sure it shows that he knew the top and bottom, but did he know that there was a 2?--Ed] ========================================== Editorial ========================================== Joe's column should have been new old resources. Or should it be old new resources? In any case, I certainly agree with Joe about the importance of such personal archives to history. Today I found a little version of this myself. I was dumping a bunch of financial records etc from the 1970s and 80s (a continuation of the warehouse project talked about a few weeks ago). Among those documents, I found plenty of old personnel correspondence files. In those days I used onion skin carbon paper to keep copies of correspondence. Now that we have progressed to email, I mostly keep no copies at all of correspondence. Anyway, I found quite a few letters to/from Ray Toy, Harry Coleman and others. I will at least sort these out and archive them (or send them to a literature collector). I expect that I will find some good information for commentary here in the Gram too. ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, A couple weeks back, I spoke with Fred and explained that it may be useful to have an informal Gram gathering at Memphis. It would NOT be anything elaborate...simply an excuse to meet and have some fun. Of course, it helps that there is an outstanding selection of Gram-relevant material offered at Memphis. These pieces will be sold on Saturday night, June 17. I have to add an aside-I never thought that world paper money would receive the honor of being sold on Saturday night. It had been relegated to Thursday night during the years we had floor sales. More than a few bidders commented on how they wanted to see world paper sold on either Friday or Saturday; well, NOW IS YOUR CHANCE! Plan on coming in person to attend this sale-it will be worth the effort. I will be writing several articles to highlight some special Memphis, Gram-relevant pieces. The first covers the French Guiana 1000 Francs of 1942 (#15) in LOT 2106, the World War II Remembered plate note. As stated in the lot description, only four are reported for this large size type in that source, and only one other with this signature combination. I have not seen this E.A. Wright type offered for years and would have to speculate that the few others are held in VERY strong hands. According to WWII, two were offered in the Thomas collection. It is worth noting that the Martinique 1000 Francs counterpart hammered in our internet World Sale 6 for $3200; six of the Martinique are reported in World War II Remembered, not including that piece. This note keys a strong selection not only from French Guiana, but also French colonies as a whole. We offer a rare Guiana 5 Francs with Justice in LOT 2104. A couple mysterious Algeria types from the World War II era in LOTS 2001 and 2002, highly elusive French Equatorial Africa 1000 Francs in LOT 2103, outstanding French Indochina, Guadeloupe 500 Francs in LOT 2129, Martinique 100 Francs in LOT 2189, and an appealing selection from an old time Morocco collection are also among the highlights from this region. Please contact me at grbaypa@aol.com or 414-350-6980 if you have any questions. Thank you. Joel Dear Gram, Memorial Day weekend was rather quiet in the Balbaton household. Got to watch Indy 500, RED Sox game and a bunch of stuff on the military history channel. Even got to see a great program about Medal of Honor winners/awardees on the Trinity Broadcasting Network!! Everything was going smoothly until the 18:00 hrs newscast out of one of the Boston, Mass. stations. With all the sacrifices made by those that have come before us and by many military of the present day, consider this. They had a segment about a lady and her family that was staying at a campground at/on Cape Cod, Mass. This lady's complaint was that the campground was swarming with those worms that make their homes in trees. She swore up and down that she would never stay in this particular campground again. As I watched this I thought how shallow of an existence this person must have to complain as she did, and the TV station was just as bad in featuring her "story." It looks as tho her weekend was a God given right that was not supposed to be messed up by some worms. What a priority. Richard U.S. Army 1956-1962 Dear Richard, Thanks for writing. I expected that I would get myself in trouble with my Memorial Day editorial without any numismatic content. Oh well. At first I could not find any numismatic content in your otherwise nice letter, but I was wrong! You mention medal of honor (clearly a numismatic topic) and you said something else of possible military numismatic interest. You mention watching the military history channel. I might be way behind, but not only do I not receive and our cable company not offer such a network, I also have never heard of it. It there really a military history network? Sounds like a good source for background information and even occassionally direct numismatic info. Thanks for the tip. Editor Gram, If you receive FUNTOPICS (or even if you do not) the summer 2006 issue has an article I wrote on POGs. The MPC connection is that I mention the vignette of 681 $1 & $10 appear on POGs. It was written before the 8th printing was released which has the vignette from the 681 $5. In fact the POG with the 681 $1 vignette is on the cover.
