From: mpcgram-owner@mail.papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Saturday, June 24, 2006 11:13 AM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1470 corrected copy ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1470 Saturday June 24, 2006 Memphis Was Great!!! by Howard A. Daniel III (The Master Sergeant Daniel)   I am always looking forward to buying something at Memphis, but the fellowship I find there is by far the major thing that I look forward to.  One nice surprise was seeing R.A. Medina there.  But he gave me some work to do on some "sample" Chinese silver sycee (bullion).  You know I need some more work. And I did find one piece to buy for myself, and it was from George Notarpole.  He was reluctant to sell it so I gave his wife the money and walked away with it.  George is trying to get out of the paper money business but the collector in him wants to stay in it.  The note I bought appears to be a new overstamp that was probably used for a money conversion.  We shall see. Harold Kroll had a table near George but I could find nothing there to purchase.  And he gave me his usual hard time.  I believe I am a nice guy to him but he is constantly harassing me!  Civilians! Fred brought me a box of the Leo May t-shirts from the Holiday Inn manager where the MPC Fest is held. Kim, the hotel manager, did not sell all of them so I am selling them for her and sending all of the money to her.  I sold five at Memphis, and four more back here in Virginia.  They are $10 each and I have sizes S, M, L and XL, and I will mail them, postage free to anyone who wants to purchase them.  I will be bringing them to the ANA in Denver to see them at the club table I will be manning for the IBNS, NI, NBS and the Philippine Collectors Forum. I drove Len Harsel to Memphis and helped him at his table.  It appears that he had a good show, but I am still recovering from spending six consecutive days with him!! [I wish that Len would chime in with his side--Ed.] Larry "Ski" Smulczenski received another "batch" of stuff from me for the MPC Fest Auction.  All of the proceeds for them will go into the Scholarship Fund. It included more of the America in WWII magazines. Marv Mericle was there too.  I cannot remember what we said to each other, but since he is a Navy veteran, it was probably not worthwhile repeating.  I tried to be nice to him but it was difficult. George Cuhaj was at the Krause table.  I photocopied the modern Viet Nam pages in Volume 3 and gave him an update for him at the show.  If you see anything that needs updating in this new edition, please send them to him right now so he has time to get all of them in before the next edition!  Does it come out twice a year now? Jack Lippincott was there and we discussed his excellent German exhibit!  We also talked about him coming to Viet Nam and I will loan one of my adopted nieces to him and his girlfriend to guide and translate for them. Speaking of exhibits, did you see the Lyn Knight display at the back of the bourse?  It was huge and some of the photographs in it brought back a lot of memories.  Many of the people had hair way back when, and others even had some color in it!  Joel and Niel Shafer were there and both busy!  It appears Joel had an excellent auction, and Niel found some pieces on the bourse.  I gave Niel some "stuff" I accumulate between the times I see him.  I thought I was a junk collector but this man will take anything from me! Quoc was there from Viet Nam.  He departed the show for a new show in Singapore and I will see him in Viet Nam in a couple of weeks.  He has done a lot for me in Viet Nam when I am not there and I use PayPal to get the money to him.  Ari and Anh were there next to him again.  Anh is looking really beautiful and I will try to see her father when I am in Viet Nam in July. There were many others at the show, but this item is already over "the" editor's length, so I am cutting it off.  Please forgive me if I did not mention your name. [The editor likes long.--Ed.] Before Len and I packed up and departed on Sunday, I walked the line of volunteers at the show registration table and thanked each person for their work to make it a successful show.  Len and I were on the road in the early afternoon and made it to the eastern side of Knoxville for our overnight stay before returning to Northern Virginia. I am now preparing for a month-trip to Viet Nam.  I am flying for the first time on United Airlines and will be departing from Dulles International Airport on the 29th.  If you have anything you want me to do for you in Viet Nam, please send me an email at HADaniel3@msn.com.  See you when I return.  *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: What two companies printed British Armed Forces Special Vouchers? Question 129, difficulty 3. Yesterday's Question: What country overprints appear on British Military Authority notes? Question 128, difficulty 3 (to get all three). Comments from the field: Bill Myers and Jack Hunter wrote: Bulgaria, France, and Greece. [It is remarkable how many times this question has been missed at MPCFest. That is the only reason that I made it a category 3 questoin. Also, I admit that it is more difficult to get three of three.--Ed ========================================== Editorial ========================================== Steve Feller still owes a bunch of us a drink for failing (rather miserably) to have his challenge coin. That failure was on Thursday night. On Friday morning when I changed the items from the pockets of the trousers to those that I was going to wear on Friday, I forgot to put my challenge coin in the fresh trousers so I went all day Friday without a challenge coin--and without a challenge. I discovered that fairlue on Friday night when I was going to the hotel workout room, I went back to my room to get my challenge coin because. I was lucky that there was a tiny little pocket in my work out shorts. In that high density environment I did not want to get caught short. The last item on the printed schedule for Saturday was the military collectors meeting. It was a great meeting with lots of good show-n-tells etc. Right at the end someone came up to me and reminded me that I had not done a group challenge as I usually do. You can imagine the chill that went down my spine when I realized that MY challenge coin was still in my running shorts! I shrugged off the question and rushed to my room to get the critical item. Boy was I lucky. ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, I would like to take this time to tell about an event that will be happing for the next two weeks. The navy has a program called a Tiger Cruse. The tiger cruse is a program the navy has had for several years which allows family and friends to get on board the navy ship and sail with to the next port. My son is assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Ronalg Reagan. My wife, Kevin Neidy and I are going on a Reagan tiger cruise next week. This started several months ago with the applications and physicals that had to be approved. Three other people applied for our group but were cut from the list. That made them very unhappy to say the least! This tiger cruse will be from Hawaii to San Diego Ca. seven nights and eight days aboard the USS REAGAN the newest air craft carrier. I understand there is going to be a fire power demo while we are on board. Cost is plane tickets to Hawaii + plane tickets back home from San Diego Ca. + 75$ to the navy for the trip. If possible I will email to Fred the daily activities aboard the ship. And the status of a possible mini fest collectable. Doug Bell Dear Doug, Have a great and safe journey. We look forward to your reports!
