From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 8:25 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1471 ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1471 June 27, 2006 Major General Heneke by Howard A. Daniel III (The Master Sergeant Daniel)   A local coin dealer, John Sullivan, in Northern Virginia operates Cameo Coins and Collectibles with his wife.  One of his numismatic friends is Daryl Spelbring, which lowers my opinion of him because Daryl is a former Navy chopper pilot, and a world paper money dealer.  A combination I do not like. Besides being a coin dealer, John also collects and sells firearms.  He is putting together a collection of all firearms used on both sides during the Civil War, and the paper money too.  It is already quite a collection!! But he also has the .45 pistol that belonged to a Major General William C. Haneke.  It is still in its original presentation case and includes many papers. John bought it from one of the general's sons. General Haneke retired as the Army Chief of Finance! Does this awaken any of you readers up?  He began his military career as a finance office in the Philippines before WWII!!!  Again a job that must be of interest to many of you!  And after WWII, he was stationed in Japan and was reported to be one of their currency experts!  And then he assisted Korea in establishing their economy after the Korean War.  This man must be included in the files of many Gramsters! John would like to know more about the General and to eventually sell the pistol because it does not fit into his collecting objectives.  If you know anything about this General, please contact John at 444 Maple Avenue East, Vienna, VA 22180, telephone 703-281-7053 or email at CamCoins@aol.com.   *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: 25 aurar chits were issued in Iceland. What was the issuer of the chits? Question 130, difficulty 3. Yesterday's Question: What two companies printed British Armed Forces Special Vouchers? Question 129, difficulty 3. I am excited to say the least. These events are unlike any other in numismatics! That is not to say that I have everything ready. I have lots of work to do before military numismatics starts. For the first week I am mostly student in Joe Boling's class on detecting world counterfeit notes. I am looking forward to the class. I will give you a review. I do have some responsibilities during the first week though. I am teaching the MPC boot camp for the third year. I also have a bull session on adventures in collecting. For those of you who have not (yet) attended a summer seminar, the bull sessions are not quite that, but neither are they formal classes. They are one hour sessions open to anyone. I have a great collecting story to tell. If you are going to be in Colorado Springs, I hope that you will stop in for the bull session. I spoke with Jane Colvard today. There is space both in the MPC boot camp AND in Joe's counterfeiting class. That means if you are all ready going to be there (or know someone who is), you can get into the MPC class in addition to your regular class. If you had not planned on going, it means that you can scrap your other plans and take the counterfeiting class (I am not sure if there is room to stay for the second week for the military numismatics class or not). You can go to the ANA web site for more info (www.money.org). ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, In yesterday's mail, some cash arrived and it was added to the St Jude's Children's Research Hospital donation by those who attended the MPC Fest in memory of Leo G. May Jr. (Account 14919413). I just completed a call to the hospital's donation number; 1-800-873-6983, and $250 was donated. A card will be sent to Leo's wife saying it came from the MPC Festers. Do we want to do this again in March 2007 when we meet at Camp Leo G. May Jr. in Port Clinton, OH? If so, I must received orders after my reporting in so I have "official" permission to conduct another charity drive in Leo's memory. That is all for now. I am up to my ears in alligators with less than 48 hours left before I take off for another month-long trip to Viet Nam.
