Military Payment Certificates and their cousins are no exceptions. Currently found in unused, non-issued condition are four US Treasury Department/Iowa War Finance Committee coupons. One of the four can be viewed using the following links: http://members.cox.net/nhatrang75/war-iowa-f.jpg http://members.cox.net/nhatrang75/war-iowa-b.jpg Measured 10 x 3.5 inches they were in a miscellaneous bunch of papers. They were just there, drawing no attention, showing no glory. The seller had no ideas what they could be and neither did the buyer. The items do not have any title but are sequentially numbers. Actually three out of four are sequentially numbered No. 659922, No. 659923, and No. 659924. One item is numbered B 246695, apparently printed at a later time, or, one my think or wish, was some type of replacement. The items were printed, if the back is decoded correctly, in August 1944 by the Wallace-Homestead Company. The B 246695item was printed in 1945 by the same company. The high serial numbers seem to suggest that at least that many pieces were printed all together. If that is true, then there must be more of those little pieces than the entire population of Iowa in 1994. If that many were printed and why did we not see one listed in any reference books? It is clear that one was printed for Iowa, then how about other States? Must we conclude, for example, that there existed a Nebraska War Finance Committee and thus similar items. Since the items do not show any map or the seal of Iowa, could the printer just simply replace the word Iowa with another State's name that was a part of the Union in 1944? Let assume that every state was a part of the war effort, then the question we may ask: is the serial number unique to Iowa or did the serial of number No. 659924 account for all states? A search on Google did not result in any relevant hits. Could this be true? My 1997 Village Van Air Bag light came up, blinking and blinking. Two minutes on Google and I found the instruction to reset it. Yet, an hour on Google and I found nothing on these items. Can someone shed a light on this?   ********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: What denominations were added to the United States War bond program after the porgram started. Question 132, difficulty 3. Yesterday's Question: In what year was the first Military Numismatics Summer Seminar? Question 131, difficulty 2 (not a 3 only because there have not been too many making guessing easy). I am reporting from the campus of Coe College where I stopped in to see Fester Steve Feller enroute to Colorado Springs. I planned on simply dropping into his office unannounced, but I got lost in metro Cedar Rapids and had to call for help. While he was direcetling me out out of the country, I passed Seelye St! David has a wider reach than I ever thought! In spite of my warning (calling for directions), Steve was still dreadfully unprepared when I arrived. Let me say that we are about to go out for a beverage of my choice. Steve's office is VERY interesting. It is a mixture of academic and numismatic memories. I will just mention one of particular interest. He has a beautiful large color print that someone (I really am not certain who) created in the 1980s of Series 651 MPC. At the time, the photographs of the fractional denominations caused a stir. The other three denominations at the time would have been considered routine. Today, two would still be considered routine, but the third takes a new spotlight. It is a $10 replacement (uncirculated) with serial number A00000018! Wow, cool. That is a note that deserves a nick name. I will not be staying here long. We hope to actually work on the manuscript of the in-progress Feller and Feller camp money book. I have a few other things to report too from the trip. Those things will probably have to wait for tomorrow. ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, Reguarding Joe Bolings comment about Gail castigating folks for wearing a tie and jacket , that might not be an unpleasant happening , unless castigate was misspelled , then wow , would that hurt . :-) Gail is a very , very , pleasant part of ANA and one of the nicest people I met when I attended the summer seminar. Hope every one has a happy and safe 4th. Don't shoot tracers during drought conditions and then be surprized if you have to do a 300 yard dash to put the fire out. :-) Sam Feeback Dear Freditor, I am pleased Tony James is carrying on the representation to the seminar from the Antipodes. I know he is going to have a great time, I am just jealous that I cannot attend this year, but will be back next year. I think the advice from Joe as what to take & what not to take may have tipped Tony off & he will not be packing his Tux (damn). On another aside I was interested to see that Fred will be a student in Joe's class. Can we please have some feedback in the gram as to how successful Joe is in keeping order over the possible interruptions and chaos that could ensue? regards Nik Sharplin ========================================== Calendar =========================================== 2006 The London Paper Money Fair has moved to: Victory Services Club, 63 Seymour Street, off Edgware Road, Marble Arch London and the dates are: July 2 and Nov 26. see: www.britishnotes.co.uk or www.londonpapermoneyfair.co.uk 1-14 July ANA summer seminar Colorado Springs Coin Show on July 7, 8, & 9 with lots of folks from the seminar and probably a mini Fest on Saturday afternoon. 16-20 August ANA convention, Denver September 14th-16th, Long Beach, mini fest to be annuonced The World Paper Money Fair, organised by the London chapter of the IBNS will be September 30/October 1 at the new venue: Hotel Russell, Russell Square, Bloomsbury, London.  see: www.ibnslondon.org.uk Oct/Nov Pcda St Louis ========================================== for dealer Hot Contact list, ANA MPC museum holdings and other static information please click this link: http://www.papermoneyworld.net/Gramattichments.htm ========================================== 2006 scholarship fund Donations of cash and numismatic material will be gladly accepted.
