From: mpcgram-owner@mail.papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Friday, July 07, 2006 11:36 AM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1478 ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1478 Friday July 7, 2006 Trip Report by Howard Daniels I have been back in Viet Nam for eight days. I attended one meeting of the coin and stamp club at the Art Museum on my first Sunday morning. It was my first contact with the numismatic and philatelic community and now I am receiving many telephone calls from collectors and dealers who have something I want to buy. Of course, it is rare when I buy something, but they will assure me that they have what I am looking for. One collector came to my house and he showed me many pieces I did not want, but he did have a $10 Korean coupon with the ancient warrior on the face. If you are interested in it, please email me at HADaniel3@msn.com. I visited Quoc's new store yesterday. He is open in the morning to everyone and by appointment in the afternoon. He had a couple of pieces for me and then we went to lunch. I have visited my local used book source a couple of times and today, I bought three used books that will find a nice home in my library. I have also been shopping in the new bookstores but found nothing in them yet. And I have two want lists from friends but cannot yet find anything for them. A few days ago, one of my nieces and I rented a car and drove to Phan Thiet. My wife wanted me to personally inspect a couple of beach resorts to be sure they would be good enough for her and her family. We found one place and will be renting three beach bungalows for four days in a couple of weeks. Going north on Route 1, Saigon seems to go on forever. Long Binh is now a huge industrial park with factories as far as the eye can see. The countryside and the beaches are absolutely beautiful, and the crops growing between the hills and houses and roads look great too! If you really must call me, my cellphone is 011-84-090-953-9109. Please remember that the time here is about 12 hours different than EST! You do know that I need by beauty sleep. ********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: Yesterday's Question: Comments from the field: Bill Myers reports: There have been 38 summer seminars and military numismatics has been involved since 2001 so this will be the 6th year. ========================================== Editorial ========================================== Yesterday was a madhouse of education and political discussions in Colorado Springs after the report in the morning that the 2007 Summer Seminar would be one week instead of two. A meeting was held after classes on Thursday on the subject. It was called by Sheryl G. S. von Blucher (ANA chief operating officer) and Lane Bruner (director of outreach (which includes education)) ANA officers, students and instructors attended. Lane described the intention of the ANA to expand seminar programs to remote locations in connection with other numismatic events (shows and conventions) and to reduce the length of the Colorado Springs summer seminar to one week. Lane stated repeatedly that it was his intention that the seminar would not reduce the number of classes or students and that there basically is no limit on the number of people who could participate. The membership present (students and instructors) expressed passionate and usually logical oposition to the reduction to one week. The essense of their argument was If it ain't broke don't fix it. It seemed to me that the reason for the condensation was to save money although this was not specifically stated. It seemed to me that it was a mistake to discuss the remote seminar idea along with the Colorado Springs seminar because it caused some confusion in the discussion when it was clearly the Colorado Springs seminar that was on the mind of the students and teachers. At the evening social affair Sheryl (von Blucher) clearly stated to me (and David Heinrich) that we had misunderstood and that the matter of reducing the Springs seminar to one week was something that was being studied by the staff and NOT a decision. I hugged her and apologized for having misunderstood. I am sure that this subject will be a major topic of discussion during session two and we will both report and comment on that. On the much more pleasant subject of session two, preparations are heightening. As soon as I dispatch this message, I will go to headquarters where a large shipment has arrived for the chief Fest finance officer. Rumors have been swirling about a possible new issue of notes, but of course these can neither be confirmed nor denied. ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, I was sure I answered the question you asked literally and correctly! On the 1944 D/S, there are actually 3 types. Type I shows the top of the S slightly to the NE of the D. Type II shows the diagonal of the S in the center of the D. And Type III shows the bottom of the S slightly below the D. Type III is the scarcest followed by Type I , and then Type II is the most common. You may see high prices for this variety but realistically, they are worth $30 - $40 in BU condition as they show up rather frequently. Thanks, Ray Czahor Cookie Jar Collectibles Dear Ray, Thanks for the help (both with the question asked and now with the question intended). I guess that I should have expected such detailed info from you, but I am very plased with it in any event. We would love to have nice marco photo of all three types in Remembered II. Can you help with that?
