From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2006 8:55 AM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1483 ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1483 Wednesday July 12, 2006 Replacement Sells The second reported MPC Series 591 $5 sold yesterday at ebay auction for $12,100 after obviously heated bidding. The note was listed by the seller as being in extremely fine condition, but it looks more like a fine in the scan. Of course, what difference does it make when it is only the second one known in any collection?! Three collectors pushed it to this record/near record level and several others were not far behind. This is certainly the highest price ever paid on ebay for a military payment certificate. It is virtually a tie for a publicly traded replacement (remember the Series 651 $10 replacement last month). Here is a link to the ebay auction where you can see the note and the bid history. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290005185564 Lire Falling The exchange rate for Allied Fest certificates has been falling significantly. It closed at 3.35 lire per dollar on Tuesday. Speculation about the cause has ranged from world cup results to rumors about the future of Summer Seminars. Pressure has been exerted from outside Camp May West to prop up the lire (see letters). Although such actions may not be legal they are certain to have an effect on exchange rates. ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: What MPC sold for the highest price at public auction? Question 140, difficulty 1. Bonus points: Who were the buyers and sellers and what was the auction company? Yesterday's Question: List seven countries that had forces stationed in occupied Germany. Question 139, difficulty 3. Comments from the field: Bill Myers wrote: First of all, about the AM yen block that I missed. It was the BEP-printed 1 yen block B-. Now, regarding yesterday's question: There were the big 4-United States, United Kingdom, France and the Soviet Union. Three other countries had produced military currency for their troops for use in Germany and they were Denmark, Belgium, and the Netherlands. I also thought Canada had troops but that makes 8. [Bill, good job on all counts. Yes, Canada did participate in the occupation, but, as you know, we are always lenient regarding questions we only asked for seven. The ones that you named all issued specific paper money issues for occupied Germany so it is easy for us to name them. There is at least one more country that is known to have had troops in occupied Germany. Unfortunately, we do not know of ANY numismatic issues for this country. It is Norway. It is also altogether possible that other countries participated too. Luxembourg comes to mind.--Ed] ========================================== Editorial ========================================== Oh no. Now that it is confirmed that the summer seminar next year will be two weeks, we learn that the dates selected for the first week (commencing on June 23 07) will conflict with the Memphis Paper Money Show. Of course this is an entirely different situation than the one that has been discussed here in the past. Conflicts are not avoidable (we do not know if this one was) and must (sometimes) be accepted. Also, of course, this conflict only affects a limited number of seminar participants. Of those who were here for two weeks this year possibly only Boling, Wolka, and Schwan will be affected. Wolka reported the dates and the conflict Tuesday evening. Oh well. ========================================= Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, The AM yen block forgotten was B- on one yen BEP notes. Harold Kroll Dear Gram, David Klinger handed out a British 4th series 1 pound special voucher and a 6th series 10 pence (B & W) with the overprinting of ANA Summer Seminar 2006. There is a secret mark on the notes but uv got to use a special technique to see it, I can't be morse specific. Bill Myers Dear Gram, I guess those of us not involved with the ANA Course are anxious for each new Gram to keep us up-to-date on the goings on. Actually, I'm amazed you have time to do any Grams while things are happening in Colorado Springs. Maybe I'm just getting "hooked" on these ramblings of "military @%#$", as I used to call it. Perhaps I should put them in my spam box so I stop reading them. But on the other hand, I could be hooked on worse things and I am learning something in the process. Usable knowledge, I'm not sure, but it'll keep the old brain working. Now to get some more competition out there to participate in the Challenge Questions! Competing only with my hubby may not bode well for harmony in the Myers household. Come on all you old-time Festers. Get those knowledgeable brains going and those fingers typing...By the by, I bow to my husband's answer to today's question...Keep those grams coming. Kathy Myers Dear Gram, I liked your editorial in 1482. David Klinger (delivered orally at Colorado Springs) Dear David, Thank you. I must say that I get VERY little feedback on the editorials. Editor Howdy Fred, Bill Myers forgot one particular AMC yen note, the B with no B suffix, the USBEP replacement. I am giong to compose at least a wants ad for the MPC Gram. I find it hard to believe that nobody seems to use this free service. I'll send a wants ad in my next email. I sure missed the Memphis show, and all my friends. Even you! Best wishes for now......................... Mike Dear Gram, In an effort to support the exchange rate I will exchange current MFC at the rate of 2.5 lire = $1.00 MFC current series up to $100 MFC per student.
