These are typically trade dollars and Morgan dollars. While many of these counterfeits are deceptive, many others are simply ridiculous and would not fool anyone. These include coins with a Morgan dollar obverse and the reverse of an American Silver Eagle. Absurd counterfeits are not restricted to coins and in one case include MPC. The February 12, 1953 edition of the Austin (MN) Daily Herald contains an article about counterfeit MPC in Okinawa. The chief provost marshal on Okinawa, LTC William E. Walkup, warned occupation personnel and local businesses about counterfeit $10.00 MPC. These would be Series 481 notes. The notes could be easily detected as they contained quite a few discrepancies. These included misspelling the words certificate, regulations and establishments. In addition, the "E" in "E Pluribus Unum" is backwards and the "P" is missing from Pluribus. Despite these errors, the provost marshal had a difficult time tracking down the counterfeiter. ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: The Free French local issue for New Caladonia has what vignette on the face? Yesterday's Question: What was the series designation of the last three series of Frankfurt barter units? Comments from the field: Bill Myers wrote: If I interpret the question right the last 3 series of barter notes are 1947 (2 varieties), 1947A & 1947B (not released). The first series was 1946. ========================================== Editorial ========================================== A micro Fest (without a note issue (yet)) was held in PC yesteray when rather unexpectedly Rob Drew showed up looking to add to his collection. We are (just about) always happy to see a Fest here at Fest HQ so it was a good idea. Rob is pulling his worldly possessions behind him (not in a shopping cart). He is moving from Utah to New Hampshire. The boss is always ready for a restaurant dinner so we went to the Jolly Roger (well known to Festers). It was wonderful. Not the food (although that was good), the experience. Rob parked his big rig in a near-by parking lot and I picked him up. As soon as we got to the the Jolly Roger I busted him with my challenge coin. He was plum full of excuses, but no challenge coin. Judy did not arrive at the Roger for another 10 mins. I challenged her (and by implication Rob too). She was wonderful. She dug into her purse and extracted one after another challenge coins. I think that she had six of them! Rob was jealous. I was proud. It being Monday, I had an appointment in the evening to study the laws of probablity and chance so Rob and I went to the poker game. He feigned being a reluctant player, but he did better than I did (but we both lost). Today Rob wants to see the streamlined warehouse and look at notes. I think that we can accomplish those tasks. ========================================= Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, Maybe the solution is NOT bid until the last minute The shiller then won't have time to pump in more bids.
