It was published weekly between June 1942 and December 1945. As the Army spread throughout the world, so did Yank magazine. By the end of the war there were separate editions published in France, Panama, the Philippines, Japan, the Central Pacific, the Marianas, the Ryukyus, Italy, India-Burma and Iran. The magazine covered the war from the enlisted man’s point of view. It contained articles, cartoons and letters concerning the war, the home front and issues within the Army itself. It was also well-known for its pin-up posters. With the war over, the final edition was published on December 28, 1945. On its cover is a certificate of discharge for the magazine itself signed by General Eisenhower. Occasional issues of the magazine carried photographs and stories of numismatic interest. At least on issue (the February 23, 1945 Central Pacific issue) carried a cover photo of interest to military money collectors. It had a picture of an Army finance sergeant carrying $1,000.00 bundles of $10.00 Hawaii overprint notes. The magazine itself also produced a numismatic item. When it ceased publication, the War Department issued checks to subscribers as refunds for their subscriptions. The checks are drawn on a War Department account at the Chase National Bank in New York. They are printed on IBM automatic data processing cards with a plain format. A copy of one of the checks can be seen at http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j83/mufelika/Yankcheck.jpg ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: How does Walter Rundell fit into our studies? Question 146, difficulty 3. Yesterday's Question: What was the purpose of supplemental currencies? Give at least two examples. Question 145, difficulty 3. Comments from the field: Bill Myers wrote: Supplemental currency adds (or supplements) to the current currency in circulation of a particular country. France flag back francs and Japan B yen are examples. ========================================== Editorial ========================================== I was wrong about one thing. Well actually, one thing in two ways. I somehow got confused on when the auction with the Ski Celebraton Certificate (for the bennefit of the scholarship fund) was ending. It is not until about noon eastern Tuesday. That will give everyone more chances to go for the gold and support the fund. The interest has been heavy so far with the minimum bid needed to obtain one of the notes now something over $30. I that is cool! Remember, every cent goes to the scholarship fund. Here is the address of the auction. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110017871739 It is an interesting coincidence that Jim wrote about Yank magazine because I am currently reading an anthology of Yank published at the end of the war. It is very intersting even though I have not come up with any numismatic connections so far. ========================================= Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, Dear Esteeemed Editor, I have changed my travel route going west from I-40 to I-70, and will be stopping near Kansas City to see Mike Payton and his JIM and other SE Asian stuff. If you want me to look for a particular number/letter in his JIM collection, send me an email at HADaniel3@msn.com. The new email for Quoc in Saigon (HCMC) was incomplete in my last missive.  It is SaigonCoin@cs.com for those Gramsters wanting to contact him over there. It is Sunday here in Virginia, and I am headed for our Bay House to have Williamsburg Honda check over the CRV on Monday to make sure it is in tip top shape for my trip.  It only has 210012 miles on it!  Then I pack a couple of tons of books, coins and paper money to give away to young and new collectors, and my own computer, printer and copier, and a new scanner I will be using to scan the stuff for my next catalog.  I also have more of the Leo May MPC Fest t-shirts to sell.  If I do not have room for my own clothes, I will just buy some on the way to Denver and throw them away as they get dirty and buy more.  I remember doing that on short trips to the USA during my war. After Denver, I am still planning to head to northeast Texas to see an old friend's collection who has passed away.  His widow, Mildred Flagler, has asked me to look through his collection of ALL kinds of stuff with orchids on it and recommend one or more dealers to buy it from her.  Then I am headed on I-20 for Atlanta to see a sister, then nearby to see Murray Jackson.  Does anyone remember Murray from our embassy in Saigon during my war?  He has a VERY large Viet Nam collection, to include MPC.  I will record the rare stuff and tell you about it in a future missive.  He does not own a computer!  Can you believe that an OLD timer would not own a computer?  That is all for now.
