He also reported that the Celbration Certificates issued at the event were a big hit with everyone. The grandchildren were particularly excited to find their names imbedded in the design of the notes. The eleven notes sold for $34 and change each raising more than $300 for the sccholarship fund. Personal Travels and Political Commentary by Joe Boling Well, shame on me - it has been six weeks since I filed a column (not counting the couple of items I sent from summer seminar about lots in the YN auction). I've been busier that the proverbial one-armed paper hanger. Seminar was just the start of a 25-day 5000-mile road trip that took me all the way to Ohio (stopping in Indianapolis to watch Louise sign all the papers for our new house there, then helping unload her first truck-full of household goods). After running her back home to Toledo, I returned to Seattle in a four-day marathon of driving - passing through St Louis just hours ahead of the massive storms they had, and with temperatures at the 104-105 level in both St Louis and Kansas City (and 107 in Pendleton, Oregon, three days later). Once home, it took several days to work through the mail (I had had two pouches of first class forwarded to Colorado and Indianapolis so that I could receive (and pay) bills along the way). Then came the biennial reunion of my Air Force dependents school (Itazuke H igh School), this year in Dover, Delaware. It's moving to walk around Dover, read the historical plaques, and recall the very important events that took place there leading to the independence of this nation (Caesar Rodney is not depicted on the Delaware state quarter on a whim). Now I'm back trying to finalize a donation of several cartons of books to the ANA so that I can carry them to convention and deliver them to HQ either before or after, obviating the need to pay for their packing and transport to Indy, followed by additional postage charges to get them to ANA from there. Actually, the way this move has panned out, it really would not matter in the first part of that equation - I am being charged a flat rate for the move regardless of what the scale eventually says - the mover says I will max out the van for weight, so he is quoting a flat rate for the use of the van from here to there as a single user. Nevertheless, I need to get those books out of here now, because if I wait until after I move, heaven knows how many months it would be before I even found them again. So what can I talk about that is actually worthy of a column? How about ANA politics? I noted in "Your News" of 1 August 2006 the following statement: "The YN of the Year Award will not be given for 2006 as the ANA is in process of reevaluating the award criteria." What a crock. So what if the criteria need to be tweaked? That's no reason to withhold the award for a year. Surely there is a deserving YN who would qualify under ANY criteria that were devised - so find him or her and make the award! Why penalize the YNs for ANA's inability to articulate its program objectives? YN-ness is a perishable status - one is only a YN for a finite number of years. The person ignored this year may well not be the best-qualified candidate in another year - and could pass right through the window of eligibility while ANA dithers. For those interested in ANA's exhibit rules, the exhibit committee has made a recommendation for a radical re-arrangement of the exhibit classes - reducing the number of classes from today's twenty-five to only seventeen. To see what their recommendation and thinking are, go to http://www.money.org/AM/Template.cfm?Sectionfiltered=Board_of_Governors1&CONTENTID=8063&TEMPLATE=/CM/ContentDisplay.cfm and click on "Exhibits Committee Report." If you don't like what you see, contact a friendly ANA board member and make your case. Or, if you DO like what you see, do the same - let the board know what the exhibitors would like done in regard to this issue. ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: Keeping on the same theme, how does Vladmir Prtrov fit into our studies? Questoin 147, difficulty 3. Yesterday's Question: How does Walter Rundell fit into our studies? Question 146, difficulty 3. Comments from the field: Bill and Kathy Myers wrote: Walter Rundell was a historian and author. From 1954 to 1957 he served in the United States Army investigating the history of the army's overseas fiscal activities during World War II. Rundell's books included Black Market Money: The Collapse of U.S. Military Currency Control in World War II (1964)and Military Money: A Fiscal History of the U.S. Army Overseas in World War II (1980). Warner Talso provided the longest answer ever to a championship question. In recognition of the late Walter Rundell, Jr.'s commitment to graduate education in the field of Western history, the Western History Association offers a graduate student award in the field of Western history for $1,500. The applicant should be a doctoral candidate who has completed comprehensive examinations for their dissertation subject. The student should send to each member of the award committee a vita, a statement summarizing the project and the particular library or collection in which research under the award would be carried on, and a letter of recommendation from a graduate adviser. RUNDELL, WALTER, JR. (1928-1982). Walter Rundell, Jr., historian, son of Walter and Olive (Spillar) Rundell, was born at Austin, Texas, on November 2, 1928. He grew up in Baytown, where his father taught and served as dean of Lee College from 1934 to 1967, and attended public schools there. Rundell graduated from Lee College in 1948 and received its Outstanding Student Award. He earned both B.S. (in music literature) and B.J. degrees from the University of Texas in 1951. >From 1954 to 1957 he served in the United States Army investigating the history of the army's overseas fiscal activities during World War II.qv Although he originally planned a career as a music critic, his work as a historical officer in the army led to a change in career plans, and he took M.A. (1955) and Ph.D. (1957) degrees in American history from the American University in Washington, D.C. Rundell taught at Del Mar College, Texas Woman's University, the University of Oklahoma, and Iowa State University, where he also chaired the history department. In addition, he served as assistant executive secretary of the American Historical Association, as head of a National Archives study, and as president of the Western History Association. In 1971 he took a position as professor and chairman of the Department of History at the University of Maryland, where he remained until his death; he served as department chairman from 1971 to 1976. Rundell won national acclaim through his publications. He wrote five books and contributed to fourteen others, published thirty-nine articles, and wrote more than 100 book reviews. For a series on southwestern writers, he wrote a monograph on Walter Prescott Webbqv (1971), and at the time of his death he had begun writing a full-length biography. Rundell's books included Black Market Money: The Collapse of U.S. Military Currency Control in World War II (1964), In Pursuit of American History: Research and Training in the United States (1970), Early Texas Oil: A Photographic History 1866-1936 (1977), Military Money: A Fiscal History of the U.S. Army Overseas in World War II (1980), and Oil in West Texas and New Mexico: A Pictorial History of the Permian Basin (1982). In Pursuit of American History won the Waldo G. Leland Award of the Society of American Archivists; that organization elected him its president in 1977. In 1959 Rundell married Deanna A. Boyd; they had three children. Rundell was a Democrat, and the family was active in the First United Methodist Church in Hyattsville, Maryland. Rundell died at his home in Hyattsville on October 25, 1982. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Contemporary Authors, 1981. Directory of American Scholars, 1982. James C. Maroney ========================================== Editorial ========================================== I think that the sale of the Ski Celebration Certificates was very successful. From here it seems that it was fun on several counts, honored an appropriate collector and raised some money for the scholarship fund. Hard to be better than that. We are certainly happy to have Joe Boling's column back. As a columnist he has the latitude to digress into his travel stories. He even has the option of some numismatic political commentary (not national or international (or even state or local). However, I came close to cutting his comments about the 2006 YN award as being too far afield. I am afraid that my decision to run it might have been determined by my agreement with his position. I would certainly like to know what you think. While I will be interested in your thoughts on the YN award, I will be more intersted in what you think about the inclusion of the subject (ANA officers and staff, we would PARTICULARLY like to hear your comments). I also chuckle a little at Joe. I am sorry about being so cinical, bu without looking into the matter, I will wager that the reason is MONEY. ========================================= Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, Ever need to find a book? Save time, that's a LOT of time and gas etc etc go to www.abe.com. More books than you will ever imagine!!! Nick Dear Nick, We DO like books. Thanks. Editor Dear Gram, I thought the "Gram" readers might be interested in this little remembrance after reading the book review. During one of my phone conversations with the late, great collector, Amon Carter, he related this story to me: Amon was an aviator (pilot) in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He had been shot down over Germany. I don't recall how long he was a P.O.W., but he told me that he had been "liberated" by Russian soldiers. He said they treated him like a hero, and couldn't have been kinder to him. Before they parted, the Russian soldiers handed him a "generous" quantity of allied military marks. Their parting words..."HAVE FUN!!!" Mike Payton Dear Gram, Ok!!! However, by choice, let me go with these.........1st 5, 2nd 11, and 3rd(but, by no means last) 39!!!! And, even though my consideration was last, my bid was, by no means, last! Any points for that???? I consider any decision by the judges (freditor) to be binding and final!
