From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Monday, August 14, 2006 10:13 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1492 corrected ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1492 Monday August 14, 2006 Philippine Collectors Meet in Denver by Ray Czahor The ANA World's Fair of Money will be held August 16-19, 2006 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver,CO. The Philippine Collectors Forum will meet as scheduled at 1PM on August 18th in Room 706. Although I cannot attend, Ken Seymore and Howard Daniel plan to host the meeting. It will be a more informal meeting this year with only one presentation scheduled, that by David Provost on "How to design and produce a NEW Philippine Medal". Other activities will be "Show and Tell" so plan to bring an item or two and talk about them for a few minutes. A suggestion was made to hold a collectors auction for an hour or so of Philippine items so bring up to 10 items for sale. There will also be door prizes so any donations will be appreciated. And of course there will be plenty of time for informal discussion and trades. Be sure to visit the PCF Club Table in the secure area of the bourse. It will be collocated with Howard Daniel's other organizations and will continue to educate kids (and adults) in collecting activities with information and giveaways. Howard would appreciate spelling him at the table for a few hours during the week so please help him out. Hope everyone has a great week in Denver. ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: What currency printing operation (by name) was critical to Operation Overlord? The planned departure time was noon Sunday. I got on the road at 8pm. Not too bad by my standards! The trip has been mostly uneventfull thus far. Nary a numismatic adventure to report except from telephone reports. Rachel Feller is back home in Cedar Rapids for a full week of intese work with coauthor Steve on their World War II camp money book. They believe that the manuscript will be finished when I stop by there later this month while returning from the convention. That should be exciting and I know that the convention will be too. I am giving a presentation at noon Thursday as part of the Sundman lecture series. I actually have most of the presentation ready and have some new material to present and some surprises too. I will be delighted if you can make it to the persentation. ========================================= Mail Call =========================================== Dear Freditor, I certainly agree with you and Joe re: the ANA-YN award. Also, had it not been for his column and you publishing same, I never would have known about it. The ANA should be ashamed! Bob Reed Dear Editor; You asked so here goes. Like Joe, I am an old line Sergeant who has never been politically correct (nor do I ever want to be). We were both raised in an atmosphere where truth and fact were the goal and being politically correct fell by the wayside as unworkable and something to be left for the feather merchants (civilians). Political commentary, especially on a subject as vitally important to the future of numismatics as the YN program, is something we all should engage in as ANA members. Informed discourse is a necessity in any organization and it is both our right and duty to speak up. Should this discourse be carried on in the MPC Gram? Why not? What better place than the one thing that connects all of our members. Joe's statement, although blunt in the manner of an old Sergeant, was direct, gentlemanly and to the point. Censoring an article is something that an editor should do with great reluctance. Stifling the flow of discourse between members is not something to be desired no matter the presumed reason. As to our present ANA leadership I confess that I also have a certain amount of dissatisfaction with them and some of the actions undertaken by the Board. There will be a number of new faces come the next election I suspect. Personally, I don't care for either our old new and very insipid logo or the new new logo which is an improvement but not much of one. I feel that the money spent on this could have been better spent on the YN program (and I devoutly hope that this last politically charged comment is gentlemanly enough to escape the censor's pen). Paul Garner Curmudgeon and ORS (old retired Sergeant) Edior, Is there a mini-fest on Saturday at the ANA?? Larry Gibbs Dear Larry, Good question. As far as I know, no one has stepped forward to announce a miniFest. However, I would not be surprised if there was a spontaneous miniFest at the end of the IBNS meeting on Saturday. Editor Dear Editor-in-Chief. I think that including current ANA politics is appropriate for inclusion in the MPCGram. David Klinger Dear Dave, Thank you for your thoughts. As only you know, I edited your letter to remove some more specific comments. The reason is not quite as obvious as it may seem. First, I need more time to think about the role of the Gram in numismatic politics. Secondly, and sadly, I probably need some legal advice on such matters. I expect to get advice on both of these points at the convention. Editor In Gram 1491, we Gramsters were encouraged to write to the ANA exhibit committee, if we had comments to the new ANA exhibit classes etc. I can tell you that I have done so, to William Horton. He has replied that he will copy my input and hand it to the committee members for the meeting in Denver. Have a great ANA.
