Daniel III I was on the DC Beltway at about 5AM. Just over the Ohio line in Indiana on I-70, a rainstorm was so heavy I could not see ANYTHING. Luckily, an exit was near and I got off and into a McDonald's parking lot to sleep it off. About 45 minutes later, it was a drizzle and I got back on I-70 westbound. Within a couple of miles, I saw an accident on the eastbound side being cleaned up. It included a couple of 18-wheelers, pickups and cars. I felt VERY good about getting off during the storm in case there was the same thing on my side of the interstate. I arrived in Terre Haute and checked into a Comfort Inn Suites near the exit. I called Marvin Mericle and his wife answered the telephone. He was coming back from golf and she was preparing dinner. If I drove to their house, Marvin would be there and the dinner would be ready. His wife was very courteous for the entire evening, but he bothered me a couple of times. I have never been able to get along with Swabbies, and he wanted me to stay over in his house! I was back on I-70 at 5AM and arrived in Kansas City, MO at 3PM and checked into a Comfort Inn. I called Mike Payton and we talked about what he would bring to my room from his collection. He arrived with his Viet Nam and JIM collections. We went through everything and added what I did not know into my databases. It was a very worthwhile time! For anyone interested in JIM, you should visit with Mike! The next morning, I was on I-70 before 5AM and headed west. Kansas is a VERY boring drive. When I crossed the Colorado line, I could have gotten out and kissed the ground in a new state with no corn fields! I took the Colorado-24 road to Colorado Springs and stayed with Army 1SG (Ret) Max George and his wife. We were stationed together in Heidelberg. After two days and nights, I headed for the ANA headquarters building to make a donation to the Library and the Museum. Then I drove to Denver and checked into the Holiday Inn City Center. Joe Boling called me to say he was in Denver too but he was headed for Colorado Springs to make a ANA Library donation too. I asked him to bring back my cart which I left near the receptionist's counter while I shopped in the gift shop. I am expecting Fred Schwan today (Tuesday), which is PNG Day, and Joe and I will be completing the setup for the exhibits area. I have created a flyer I can put into two different sized baggies with some world coins (from NI), world paper money (from IBNS) or MPC from David, who donated them to me at the recent MPC Fest. And into many old catalogs and references donated by NBS members. I think the young and new collectors coming to my club table will be very happy after receiving my handouts! That is all for now. I will write more during and/or after the ANA, and when I am on the road back to Virginia and visiting more collectors on the way back. ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: What two (issued) miltary payment certificates are not known to exist in collections? Not when you go to the Fest or when Schwan is visiting, but ALL of the time. Need proof? At 10am today enroute to Denver we stopped at a place called the Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles. It is a very nice place and even has free admission. (You can try www.heartlandmuseum.com) The greeter asked me to sign the guest book. When I started writing I saw that the person before me this morning was Jack Hunter from Hickman, Nebraska! I could hardly believe it. I then looked up and there he was at the back of the main hall. Jack "Champ (2004)" Hunter. I immediately went to my challenge coin and Jack was just as fast as I was. Not only did he meet the challenge, but he had two personalized challenge coins! We then spent a pleasant half an hour or so, make than an hour, looking the place over and chatting. The museum bills itself as being of military vehicles, but it is far more than that. It includes a wide variety of other things as well as a great assortment of vehicles. Numismatics is the center of to exhibits: one of general paper money including JIM and other WWII items, and most amazing of all a nice MPC starter set. Eagle eye Jack found that they have a much nicer Series 472 10 cent from position 21 than he has in his collection. He immediately started working on a trade. He also introduced the idea that the museum should have a copy of Remembered and the MPC book at least for their library and possibly for resale. I carted a brace of books in from the car. Unfortunately, I must admit in this case that the folks were not much interested. Drat. Jack too was on his way to the Denver ANA and I recruited him to help in the Thursday presentation. Perhaps drafted him is a better term. ========================================= Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, I thought the "Gram" readers might be interested in this little remembrance after reading the book review. During one of my phone conversations with the late, great collector, Amon Carter, he related this story to me: Amon was an aviator (pilot) in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He had been shot down over Germany. I don't recall how long he was a P.O.W., but he told me that he had been "liberated" by Russian soldiers. He said they treated him like a hero, and couldn't have been kinder to him. Before they parted, the Russian soldiers handed him a "generous" quantity of allied military marks. Their parting words..."HAVE FUN!!!" - Mike Payton Dear Gram, #1492 the Christopher Columbus Gram opening the way for a new world of MPC. Tolek Dear Cuneyd, I like it. It has been a long time coming but we are about to pass another threshold--1500 grams. The second thousand are decidedly coming slower than the first, but that could always change too.
