The program started with inprocessing were students received ration cards and a souvenir note. The souvenir notes were issued under the authority of Lane Brunner of ANA headquarters. Fred and Judy Schwan had also presigned the notes as starters for short snorters. The students were slow to work on their souvenirs, but ultimately got with the program. Schwan explained the historic, if complicated situaiton surrounding the creation and issuing of Allied Military Franc notes. The highlight was a 6 second newsreel clip of soldiers being paid in AM francs as part of their prepartions for D-Day. ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: What denomination AM francs was printed, but not issued. As mentioned in the lead story, I was honored to give a presentation as part of the Sundman lecture series. It went over well enough. The story that I want to tell the most took place during the preparations. I planned to take sufficient AM francs to the program to give one to every person. Well, I left the notes at home or have misplaced them in my stuff here at the convention. A scant two hours before the program, I went to the table of Leon Thonrnton where I purchased about 25 of the small denomination notes at nominal prices so that I could give them away. Enroute to the presentation, I happend to pass the table of the French mint. I was interested in some of the military decorations that they had in the cases as examples of their products. There was a pamphlet associated with the military decorations. I (eventually) got them to let me look at the pamphlet. It had some good information. I asked if there was a copy that I could have. They only had one. Could I have the one at the end of the show? No prompt answer, but the boss was called over. We had a short conversation relying on his poor English. I do no French. He saw the francs in my hand. I handed him one and upon learning that he had no idea what it was, I explained it and told him he could have the note. He was a gentleman in his 40s I think. He was moved by the historic significance of this note. I have made similar presentations to people before (just as Warner Talso has), but I have never been able to do it to a Frenchman. Heck, I was touched by the degree to which he was touched. He suggested that I could have the pamphlet by asking again at closing on Saturday. Thur is always a late night at the ANA because of the NLG bash. Last year I was humbled to receive the highest award of the guild--the Clemy. The system is that the receipent one years selects (within limits) the receipent the next year and makes the award. It was my distinct honor to make the presentation this evening to a most deserving individual. The 2006 Clemy went to Barbara Gregory, editor of The Numismatist since 1988. I could tell that Barbara was quite pleased and probably felt many other emotions because she was in tears. ========================================= Mail Call =========================================== Dear Editor, First I want to extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to the Gramsters Scholarship Fund that helps to support the Military Numismatics class at the ANA Summer Seminar. Special appreciation goes to you and Joe for making the yearly trek to Colorado Springs to teach what has become one of our most popular classes. The class is innovative, engaging and just plain FUN. I wanted to comment on recent remarks in the Gram regarding the Outstanding Young Numismatist of the Year Award. It is not being awarded in 2006 – not because of money, but quite simply because we received no nominations for the award. That led us to the decision to re-look at the criteria and see how we can get more input and nominations. The YN programs are as important to all of us at ANA headquarters as they are to you and the entire ANA membership. As executive director, I always welcome comments and questions about any of our many programs. Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you especially enjoyed a program or event, want to compliment a certain staff member, question something we are doing, have a comment or are just looking for more information. I can be reached at cipoletti@money.org. You and all the Gramsters are all invited to my presentation at the Denver ANA show on the future of ANA on Friday at 6 pm in room 704. Bring your enthusiasm, open minds and questions. Thanks, Chris Dear Chris, I am tempted to defend our editorial position, but instead am pleased to simply say that we are very pleased to have your letter and will always welcome your comments. We will continue to criticize, but also to priase you, the ANA staff, ANA elected officers as we feel appropriate. I think that our record supports this. We have published many articles praising the summer seminar, exhibiting program, and other ANA programs. Thank you for the kind words about the military numismatics seminars. They have been successful, fun, and I must also say, a lot of work. We love it. I expect to be at your program. Thanks again for writing.
