From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Sunday, August 27, 2006 11:09 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1497 ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1497 Sunday August 27, 2006 ANA convention news by Joe Boling Fred beat me to the keyboard. He already announced that Sam Spiegel has won the YB Best of Show award in Denver. But he did not mention Sam's marvelous talk at the IBNS meeting on Saturday morning. Sam related how he had noticed the Four Freedoms listed on the back of the Italian AMC and had wondered where they had originated. He Googled a couple of the phrases and found them use in a Truman speech in 1946 (three years after their use on the notes). Then he located the original FDR use before US entry into the war, then the Norman Rockwell paintings in the Saturday Evening Post, to which he attributes their becoming part of the war effort, because Treasury then picked them up for bond posters (they had ignored them until the Post published them). It was a great talk and the basis of what will hopefully he a great article. I hope I have not stolen his thunder, because we want to publish the article in the gram. It was a day of triumph by seminarian Sam. At the minifest following the IBNS meeting, examples of the Silent D-Day Participant Souvenir Note from Fred's Maynard Sundman lecture were distributed to participants who supported the educational goals of the minifest with a show-and-tell item. The notes were the same as those distributed Thursday except for the addition of a large US Treasury seal overstamp At the closing banquet tonight, Convention Fest Certificates in denominations of 1, 2, and 4 (no monetaire stated) and seven dollars were distributed to diners. All pieces observed thus far are series 115, block LG (ANA 115th anniversary convention, Lawrence J Gentile Sr the Farran Zerbe award winner). All notes bear images of the Zerbe award or of Gentile, or both. One error note has been seen - a double denomination 2/7 (inverted with respect to each other). If Great Lakes Bank Note Company does not get it's quality control in order, it may lose it's ANA contract. I will be on the road for two days returning to Seattle. The packers start work this week (though most of the heavy lifting will be performed 5-9 September). The Master Sergeant Daniel joins me to assist in numismatic packing 30 August, and Louise arrives 2 Sept. Philippine Report from ANA by Ray Czahor The Philippine Collectors Forum met at the ANA World's Fair of Money on 18 August at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, CO. David Provost's Presentation on "How to design and produce a NEW Philippine Medal" was the highlight of the meeting. He told about the process to design, find a manufacturer, and produce the medal as a 1 oz silver, 39mm. The design was based on Miguel Figuera's proposed design for Philippine coinage but was not adopted. He had on display the plaster models and dies and actual struck medals. Fifty were struck with a reeded edge and he offerred some for sale. He may have another striking of the medal with a smooth edge if there is demand. "Show and Tell" of interesting Philippine items was the other major activity. There was also many door prizes so everyone went home with at least two. A COINWORLD reporter attended so you should see a write up soon in their paper. The next PCF meeting will be held in Milwaukee, WI in conjunction with the 2007 ANA Money Fair, starting Wednesday, August 8, 2007. The Philippine Mailbid IX was in the mail to all addresses two weeks ago. Everyone including Overseas Addressees should have received it by now. If not, please review it with bid sheet on my web site: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/cjcpi The sale closes at midnight, Pacific Coast Time, and contains 1940 lots, the largest ever I have sent out. At this point with bids received from 61 bidders, strong interest appears to be Culion Leper Colony coins and history book, Proofs, MS64 and higher business strikes, RARE Errors and Military Tokens, Guerilla Currency, Stamps, Books, and Albums. (Please note that I duplicated the lot numbers in the mailed list: 517 through 524 and are now renumbered 524A through 524H). There was also interest in the French Indo China Piastres in the add-on lots. By Wednesday, the 30th of August, the current bidding on lots will be posted on my web site for review. The final time current bids will be put on the web site will be the 9th of Sept. Please don't wait too long to send your bids in to me by mail or by email. This week I will start contacting each bidder by phone or email to review status of their bids. My policy is normally to contact a bidder at least once to review their bids. ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: Where was the SS contration camp in Italy? Question 154, difficulty 3. Yesterday's Question: The serial number block G-G is used on what series of note to designate replacements? Question 153, difficulty 2. I ran into some roadblocks (figurative). They were not really big problems, but I had some trouble resolving them. They have been resolved. Sorry that I left you Gramless. At this moment I am sitting in Steve Fellers office (aka mini black hole) with Steve and Ray. We are working on the manuscript for their new WWII camp money book. They have some great information and new material and it should be a great book. Steve would be particuarly happy to hear from anyone who has some information for inclusion. If there is any doubt that they might need the information that you have, please write to Steve (sfeller@coe.edu). ========================================= Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, I want to add my congratulations to Barbara Gregory on her Clemy Award.
