I accepted donations at Port Clinton and in Memphis, then sent everything in to the hospital in honor of Leo. While I was assisting Joe Boling with his move from Federal Way to Indianapolis, a card came in from Val with a long message written on it. The following is what she wrote; MPC Festers, c/o Howard Daniel, 30 Aug 2006 Dear Festers, Thank you so much for the donation gift, in Lee's name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. As you know, that was a cause close to his heart. I really appreciate it. I was away for 7 weeks this summer visiting Lee's Aunt Anne in Seattle to help her celebrate her 89th birthday. I then went on to Northern Washington (up in the Kettle Mts) to spend 3 weeks with a high school friend (lots of "girl" talk, etc.) and then down to the San Jose, CA area to spend another 3 weeks with another great fried from high school and her husband. Once home (Aug 11), I reconnected with Lexa and Leo and Mary and my little grandson, Evan who had really sprouted up and my baby (6 mo) granddaughter, Alicia, who had learned to turn over, reach for things, laugh, etc., in my absence. They grow so fast! I am now enjoying babysitting while Alexa works very hard to try and become a Mary Kay sales rep which will pay her a lot more than what she's getting now and will hopefully enable her to stay home from working (teaching) for at least another year. Howard, I hope you can get this into the gram or something so you all will know how I appreciate your thoughtfulness! Take care - Hope to see you all in Jan. in Orlando. It arrived in a priority mail flat rate box. I could not figure out what that could possibly be, but I did not expect it to be good news. I was certainly wrong about that. I believe that it is the largest and heaviest paper money auction catalog ever produced and it might hold that record for a long time. The American Bank Note Company archive sale certainly had more notes, and there might have been an auction with more lots, but the catalog, wow. Based on size I thought it might have one of every national bank note ever issued, but there was not a single note from Ottawa Country, Ohio. I was both pleased and disappointed about that. The MPC section too is a bit lean so I was disappointed in that too. When I was putting the catalog aside for filing I noticed that one of the cover notes was a North African issue. I saw instantly that it was a $10 replacement. My first thought was that that is a dumb note to put on the cover. North Africa $10 replacements are not even particularly scarce. The Series 1934A is quite common and the Series 1934 is unique and has never been sold via auction. Those were just fleeting thoughts as I looked more closely. Yes, this was the 1934 star! Now I was really interested. I finally found the note (lot 18065 on page 481). This is not the original Jim Thompson note, but a new discovery according to the catalog. unfortunately the catalogers do not give any details of the discovery. I had not heard about it before this sale. The serial number is *0101309A. I checked with Remembered and found the serial number of the Thompson piece: *01022388A. If my subtraction is right, that is a difference of 2079. I could probably stumble around and figure out the sheet relationship of these two notes, but I hope that someone out there who is much more familiar with US small size notes will do that for us and report. After some hemming and hawing for which I cannot blame them, the catalogers come up with an estimate of $125,000-$175,000. That deserves another wow! What will it bring? Of course no one knows at this moment, but it will certainly be interesting and probably exciting. ========================================= Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, Just for the record, I do not believe that US war bonds were purchased with Japanese invastion money. Jim Dear Gram, Congratulations on Gram 1500! That is a great achievement. At the rate we are going we should receive number 1600 by 2075. Tolek Dear Subscriber, Ouch.
