We are inviting gramsters, festers, seminarians, and other friends to a housewarming party and mini-fest in Indy on 21 October from 1600-2000. When you RSVP (joeboling@aol.com), I will send the street address and directions. All you folks who live in Indiana, western Ohio, and other nearby states should plan to be here. I believe that even the battalion clerk will make it. I apologize for the late notice. It's been a tough summer. Most of you knew that I was moving from Seattle to Indianapolis - Louise flew to Seattle to assist with packing and driving. She came in behind The Master Sergeant, who was also out there for about a week packing numismatic materials and visiting friends. The main crew of packers arrived on 5 Sept (the day after Labor Day). A smaller crew had already spent two days packing non-essential stuff (things I was not still working with) the week before. The packers worked three days, and on the 8th the van and loaders arrived. My property was so heavy (over 400 cartons, plus furniture and a two-ton safe) that I got a full van dedicated to my move - they made no attempt to break down all the bookcases, because cubes were not the issue - it was the weight distribution to the axles that was crucial. Total weight was 35,000 pounds - 5k under the estimate, but still enough to justify the mode used. The van left that night and Louise and I left on the 9th for two nights in Oregon with my mother, then a four-day trek across the country. We pulled in here on 14 September and the van and local unloaders were here bright and early (and undermanned) on the 15th. When they got the safe off of the van (a rental forklift met them here), they could not get it into the house. There are two steps - one to the porch and one to the front door sill. Four guys using two wheeled jacks could not move that safe up the ramp into the house - we ended up parking it in the garage (an unsatisfactory long-term solution because of the lack of climate control in the garage). So, a dedicated safe-moving company was employed. They got here about a ten days later and had the same problem (and they arrived with one fewer body than the movers had). I ended up pushing the safe up the ramp with my car, and five of us then got it over the last hump at the door sill (a neighbor, amused at the sight of me driving into the house, came to assist with that last push - his help was the turning point). Once inside, they were able to get it to within an inch of where I wanted it (a critical inch - I had to swap bookcases with another room to finish that wall). I am much happier than I was on the 15th. Now for some actual military numismatics. A few weeks ago I got a message about and some scans of a piece that had been brought home to Australia from Vietnam. The transmitter wanted an opinion about just what his friend owned. It was obviously a series 641 50c note that was missing a lot of printing - the whole orange plate was absent. It looked like a partially-printed note - the serials and position number are present, and the brown-black counters and much of the blue and brown underprint - but the portrait is a blank spot, and none of the text is present. It's a spectacular error - until you look at the back. The back is also missing all of the orange - only the gray-brown counters and the same-color linework around the eagle are present. The eagle, like the portrait on the face, is a large white spot. The planchettes are so numerous (and so obvious) that they give the back a multi-color appearance even though only one color of ink is present. With the main color missing from both sides, the likelihood that the piece is actually a printing error becomes minuscule, and I told the inquirer so - but I invited him to send the note for a physical examination. It arrived yesterday. It is well-circulated in terms of wrinkles and hard creases (and it has been wet), but the note still has a lot of body, and the colors that are present do not look particularly faded. I looked it over carefully before going to bed this morning, and could see no trace of the orange plate under any aspect of white light and magnification. Tonight I looked at it under UV light. The missing is found - under long-wave UV, the portrait is faint but clear, and more significantly, all of the text is readable - even though it is completely invisible under white light. The back is not quite as bold, but the eagle is visible under UV. In short, it's a spectacularly damaged note, but not a printing error. Has anyone else seen one of these orange notes with the main plates (face and back) obliterated? Does anyone have a suggestion as to what kind of environment would cause this kind of damage? Don't forget - party in Indy on 21 October. Let us know you are coming (or even just thinking about coming). ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: Question 162, difficulty 1. Who wrote the book on Philippine guerrilla notes? Yesterday's Question 161, difficulty 2. What is the geometric figure that dominates the Durchgangslager Amersfoort notes? Question: Question 161, difficulty 2. What is the geometric figure that dominates the Durchgangslager Amersfoort notes? Kathy Myers wrote As a "newbie" at this military numismatic stuff, I was actually quite proud to say I knew this one without referring to my brand new S&B,though I admit checking it to confirm my answer and read about the notes. It is the triangle, which seems to appear on many of the concentration camp notes. Glad to see the Gram is back. We DID miss you. (Bill thought he had just been missing it in his e-mail...guess e-mail takes longer to get to Kuwait?!) [Kathy can we look forward to seeing you at Fest 8 (with or without Bill?] ========================================== Editorial ========================================== When I was reading Joe Boling's report of moving his safe, I could not help thinking of the famous 19th century vignette of a do sitting on a safe. The title of this vignette is Security. I loved it the instant that I learned the name. I now have a vission of Joe guarding that safe with his BB gun. I am delighted at all of the responses to the request for Fest reservations and other matters that came up in 1504. Of course there are many reservations still to come in. We do not yet have any new Festers registered. If you have not been to the Fest, I can all but guarantee you a good time. We have some new things being planned so I hope to see you here in March. ========================================= Mail Call =========================================== Dear Esteemed Editor, About two weeks ago, I went to a dermatologist and she found a spot that needed a biopsy. After four Washington Cancer Institute doctors looked at it, they said a biopsy was not necessary, it was melanoma. Three hours later, there was about half of a regular-sized lemon taken off my left calf. It looked like a BIG bite out of a hamburger and covered with stitches. I took a LOT of pain pills for a couple of days, half as many for two more days then dropped them altogether. On Wednesday, I went back to the institute and I got a look-over by the surgeon who is going to operate on me. A biopsy on the hunk taken out of me proved it was cancerous and large enough to have sent some cells up to my lymph nodes, but they believe it is early and easily curable. Besides checking me over VERY carefully, the doctor did a "finger wave" on me and said my prostrate was OK. Thanks a lot! I am now scheduling a bunch of lab work on my blood, urine and stool, two different MRI scans, and some kind of x-ray. After they get all of the results, I will call the doctor with my wife so we can schedule an operation date that is convenient for the doctor and my wife. Anytime is OK with me and the sooner the better! He said they will be going in with the metal rods about the size of a pencil, look at the places from the tests where the cancer is located, and cut and pull out those parts. Then he will take a patch of skin and fat off my buttocks (ass for you Air Force, Navy and Marine Corp veterans) and put it over the hole in my calf, and use a synthetic skin on the place where he took it off me. That is all for now. I am looking for a complete cure and I will present the doctors and nurses with a souvenir sheet of some kind with an MPC on it commemorating their work on me. I am sure they will post it in their offices and/or homes. Someone out there in Gramster land is going to have to assist me with it. Any volunteers? The Master Sergeant Daniel Dear Howard, I was looking for the humor twist, then I was hoping for it. We share your message so that everyone can add you to their personal (or public or whatever) prayer lists AND so that others of us can take some action: stop smoking, lose weight, exercise all those pesky little things. You did not say it explicitly, but I am adding you to the Fest list in anticipation that you can bore all of us by showing us your operation. I think that I know where we can find some MFC sheets for an important mission like this. Editor Dear Gram-Meister Fred,   I must say that I was getting a bit nostalgic, what with no Gram for near a fortnight. I even took to reading a whole bunch of back issues just so I had something to look at !   But just because it is two weeks late, is no excuse for skipping 1503, so where is 1503 huh?   There, now do you feel the "love"? Please accept my reservation for festate, for which I can hardly wait. Peace!   21 Dear 21, You do not have an AOL address so I do no know what happened to 1503, but I sent another. Editor Dear Editor, I am planning on coming, and will be happy to be the transportation office again. Cheers, Sparky Dear Sparky, Great and great. Everyone, please see the transportation note under coordinating instructions for the Fest in the calendar section. Dear Editor; Where will Fest 7 be held?  This will be the same weekend as Baltimore and Fort Smith, Ark.  Need the information for planning purposes. Thanks Paul Garner District Governor and Resident Curmudgeon Texas Numismatic Association Dear Crum, Thank you for writing. I have been negligent in answering a question that you have sent in the past (I think that I never answered it). As I recall, you invited the group to hold the Fest at the Texas Numismatic Association Convention/show. That was a nice invitation and I suspect that someone will take you up on it and hold some miniFests in the future. Fests on the other hand are always held in beautiful metropolitan Port Clinton, Ohio. (Near Catawba, Oak Harbor, and LaCarne (also between Toledo and Cleveland). We would love to have you and think that you would have a great time. Editor Hello Fred, Reserve a place for Miles and me. I will let you know of anyone else I can con into going (okay, con might not be the right word). I like the later dates. By the way, let's get a NBN Fest going! Is that on the back burner or has it fallen off the stove completely? William E. Yanchick Benton Coins & Collectibles Dear Gram, I must protest! I believe that if you check your records you will see that I was the first, again, to sign up and place a deposit for Fest 2007 at thet Fest 2006. Please enter my name on the list of paid Festers for 2007. Let Dave [Schwan] know that I veoted for his site! A nice one it is too! Actualy I voted twice just to be sure. You know what we say in Texas, vote early and often! The dates sound good for the 2007 Fest! Can't wait! John Cheney Dear John, How right you are. Editor I am missing #1502 and #1503. Could you please retrans. Thanks, Warner Dear Warner, That is because of the pesky AOL problem. Can anyone help? Editor Dear Gram, Please ass my name to the list for Fest 8. Roger Urce Dear Roger, I assumed that you meant add or did I miss something? Editor Dear Editor, Sign us up for Fest 8 and we want motel reservations for Thursday night also. Dan & Kathy Freeland Dear DK, Thanks for the reservation AND reminding me to think about Thursday. I am adding my Thursday estimates to the list below and ask that reservations that are still coming in include requests for Thursday as appropriate. We highly suggest that you come in on Thursday if you can. We will have our traditional meal at Big Boppers then the new tradition of bowling will be conducted with the same professionalism and excellence as last year!
