(Something about convict transportation for the crime of Counterfeiting?)A MiniFest was held on Friday 13 October 2006 after closing time of the Melbourne Fair of the Australian Numismatic Dealers Assn . A Challenge coin show down occurred during the show between Tony James and Nik Sharplin, the contest was considered a draw due to the various perceptions of which coins should be used!! Over dinner at a city restaurant a long overdue payment was made of outstanding travel pay and an amount of AUD225 or One Pound six shillings and sixpence depending upon how and who counted their pay! This was due to the overprinting of Hay Internment Camp notes (Special Printing) for 6d, 1/- and 2/- with decimal values of $5, $10, and $20.Also inscribed with the o/p Military Fest Certificate, First Australian MiniFest Melbourne, October 2006 While the Minifest was held in Melbourne Victoria, the printing of the Fest Certificates had been completed in Sydney NSW and therefore spelling errors have been observed in payments made - no doubt due to preshow pressure and lack of prior orders to the printer. Present were Tony James who attended the recent 2006 ANA Summer School and Nik Sharplin who had attended ANA in 2004 and 2005. Show and tell items included:- 10 East Africa Command Token money 5 franc New Hebridies SB1701b JIM Oceania 1/2 shilling, 1/- and 1 pound replica notes. A War journal of a 56yo officer of the Green Howards British Regiment who was a WW2 POW with an unrecorded Italian POW camp chit and German POW currency together with photo and artwork and military record book. Discussion continues upon proposed Australian representation at the 2007 Summer School and financial assistance for future students from OZ. It was agreed that a set of Australian MPC Minifest certificates be donated to next years auction held at the ANA for Young Numismatists. Both participants agreed that further education at ANA Summer Schools was required and more correspondence is to be entered into in the very near future. Since the Minifest arrangements have firmed for an increased Australian attendance at 2007 ANA!! [When Tony sent in the letter about his down under mini Fest, I intended to make some comments but forgot to make them before sending out the Gram. First, when having a miniFest, it is customary to announce it enough ahead of time that prospective participants can make arrangements. I agree that there was not much likliehood that any other convicts would have attended, but still it is good form to announce it. The next thing is to send a report of the event to the Gram (well done there Tony!!). Finally, you should send images of issued items to Doug Bell AND Al Glaser (for hanging on PMW for everyone to see and for Al to include in his catalog.--Ed) ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: Question 165, difficulty 2. What Military Fest Certificate features a chess theme? [I think that this is the first time that we have not received an answer from the field to the question so we will extend this question until next time.--Ed] Yesterday's Question 164, difficulty 2. Question: Kathy Myers answered: ========================================== Editorial ========================================== Early last week, the boss and I went to a coffee house in Marblehead (a suburb of Port Clinton) for lunch. It was nice but pricy--especially for Ottawa county in October. Two doors down was a used book store--a favorite kind of place for me. This was an upscale place as used book stores go. It is an unusual operation. It is a venture run by volunteers seeling donated books to raise money to establish a local (Marblehead) library. Hardound books are $2, paper bound $1. All of this is very cool. The bad news is that there was not a big World War II section. Indeed, there were really only two WWII books. I splurged and bought them both. One is very interesting on many counts. I am sure that I will comment on it and quote from it regularly in the weeks to come. The Secret Histoy of the War by Waverly Root was published in 1945. That was one of the things that attracted me. I like contemporary reports. Only with some digging did I find that the cut off of the book was approximately Jan 1, 1943. Here is one small among many things that I have learned so far. I learned in the 1970s from one of Ray Toy's books that the name of the Free French was changed to Fighting French by General DeGaule. In the interveening years I have seen both terms used but have never seen a discussion of this change in terminology. On page 69 Root describes how the underground movements in France gave their loyalty to the general and the name was changed in recognition of this fact because those fighters in France were not at all free, but they were indeed fighting. I am very pleased to learn this. I am going to edit this into the Remembered manuscript yet tonight. The book is interesting beyond the history. Below the autor's name on the title page is a roman numeral II. The only other large clue that this is volume II is that the book also starts with chapter 18 (but page 1.) Of course when I figured out that this is volume II, I certainly wanted volume I. That started me on a google/amazon search. Where do I start describing this journey? The first frustration was that I definately could not find Volume I. I did find many entries for Waverly Root, but this guy was a food expert. After some more digging I found that it was the same Waverly Root and there was at least a partial autobiography. Of course I ordered it. The big surprise was that I did find a sale listing for volume III! You KNOW that I ordered that one (it was substantially more than the $2 at the used book store), but still a bargain. I am only 129 pages int 624 pages and have plenty to report from those that I have read so keep your reading glasses handy. ========================================= Mail Call =========================================== Dear Esteeemed Editor, The Charlotte ANA is March 16-18 and the MPC Fest is March 23-25. I am going to have a very busy couple of weeks on the road! And it might be longer if I am again invited to talk at a Vietnam War seminar. Yesterday, I was told my internal surgery is going to be in the early morning of October 30, and that my wife can drive me home a few hours later, if there are no complications, which they (and me) are not expecting. This should get me in tip-top shape for the FUN Show in January, and then several minor (sic) events before Memphis in June. The Master Sergeant Daniel Dear The, Yes, we knew that Charlotte would make it difficult for you and Joe and possibly a few others, but for the first seven Fests we were backed up with CPMX which was more difficult for more people. For Festate I expect that Joe will go to all three events. The ANA winter event was not such a big consideration until Joe and now you started coming, but we are happy to accomodate when we can. The real difficult thing has been getting the Winter Olympics moved to accomodate the Fest.
