I figured I might have a slightly different kid count here than I have had for the past 13 years. In Federal Way I averaged about 0.2 visits per year - that's right, every four or five years one kid or two siblings would knock on my door. The street was populated with retirees, and very few kids. This year I bought three bags of candy and was ready for 50-60 visitors. Forty-seven actually showed up, ranging from not-yet-walking infants to kids as tall as I, deep in their teens (some of them were technically escorts for their younger siblings, but they were also costumed and carrying booty bags). I gave each kid a choice between candy and an old coin (without showing what kind of coin I was talking about). Twenty one elected to receive the coin. I had three rolls of 1975-76 bicentennial halves. Not many of the kids even recognized a half-dollar, but several were obviously very tickled to have received one (and a couple of the parents as well). Maybe I inspired some numismatists tonight. In today's email came notice of Noble Numismatics Pty Ltd auction #83, 23-24 November. They have only three lots in their "military items" classification - lot 3028 is a Queensland 2/6 Postal Note payable to Australian Army Canteens Services, dated 1 SF 44 (what's SF - maybe a bad impression of SP for September?).The estimate is A$250 - seems cheap to me. See it at http://www.noble.com.au/auctions/view_lot.php?sale=83&lot_id=189923&results=25&sort=lot%20ASC&category=2906&page=1&img=y&kw= Lot 3029 contains two very plain chits from the HMAS Watson (are you listening, Sparky?) wardroom mess, 1c and 5c (thus post-decimalization), plus a Royal Australian Army Pay Corps $10 decimalization training note, all with an estimate of A$100. See one piece at http://www.noble.com.au/auctions/view_lot.php?sale=83&lot_id=189924&results=25&sort=lot%20ASC&category=2906&page=1&img=y&kw= Lot 3027 contains war savings certificates, savings stamps, specimen travelers checks, and other stuff that I can't figure out because they list about 23 pieces and claim the lot is only seven pieces deep. Elsewhere are some JIM and other WWII-related lots, not very well described. There are also 226 lots of militaria (medals, badges, plaques, uniforms, blades, diaries, and so forth), and 29 lots of military literature. Check it out. DON'T FORGET - housewarming and minifest at the Bolings' new digs in Indianapolis, 11 November 2006, 1600-2000. So far I have received only one firm "I'll be there," and that was before the date got moved (please reconfirm, Brett). The battalion clerk is hard at work devising some form of recognition for this party - be here to partake. Email me at joeboling@aol.com and I'll send you directions to the camp. ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question 169, difficulty 2: What series British Armed Forces Special Vouchers was used exclusively in Berlin. Yesterday's 168, difficulty 3: What is the highest denomination Indian Defense Savings Certificate? Question 168: Kathy Myers wrote: ========================================== Editorial ========================================== Those of you who have attended the ANA summer seminar military course, have heard my odd couple introduction. Yes, Joe and I are the odd couple. His column here manifests that difference. I hardly know that it is Tue and certainly had forgotten that today is November (hence yesteday) Haloween and Joe not only knows how many kids visited his house yesterday, but how many over the decades! Joe, what is the standard deviation of mean kid visits by decade? OK, I do not even know what that means. I think that it was a cool idea to give the choice of a coin, but I am a little taken aback by the choice. First and foremost fifty cents--wow. Joe, expect your numbers to skyrocket next year! I should have put on a costume. Hm, what would be a better choice. Certainly a piece of JIM or BAFSV or world coin would be good items. Good job Joe! ========================================= Mail Call (send mail to MPCGram@yahoo.com) =========================================== Dear Editor: I read Kathy Freeland's report on the Military Numismatics Class at Summer Seminar with great interest. Kathy did a superb job of describing the course and setting the tone. The point of view of a new-comer was very refreshing. The article was very well done. I do have two comments. First, Kathy said "Our pay was in lire, although not the real stuff!" I was stunned by this comment! Not real?? Not real! One could use MF lire to buy books, buy drinks for the canteen, and buy goods and services from other class members, seminarians, and festers. It could also be converted to the current series MFC which could be spent at Fest 8 or additional things. To top that off numismats were seeking examples for their collections. If that isn't "real money", I don't know what is. Kathy also mentioned that I am the Fest Bond Chair and I "encouraged all to buy a bond to finance the war." True, to a point. In today's political climate that may or may not be seen as an appropriate statement. To be perfectly clear, Military Fest Bonds are sold to promote world peace, promote the study and collecting of military numismatica, and for the amusement of collectors. Purchase of Bonds directly affects the integrity and stability of the MFC currency system. Further, it has been speculated that world financiers watch the Military Fest Bond interest rates as an indicator of the world economy. It is the patriotic duty of all Festers and Seminarians to buy MF Bonds. Again, I do not wish to detract from Kathy's fine account, just want to clarify two points. Warner Dear Warner, We are delighted to read that you are starting your column again! Editor Dear Gram, Just received Bill's copy of the Numismatist and just wanted to comment on the nice profile of Robert Drew. Enjoyed reading about a Fester and the collection of military related numismatics!...By the by, made me wonder - am I "illegally" responding to gram questions, etc. since I am not a fester and read a "borrowed" copy of the gram? Maybe I should spring for my own subscription?? Kathy Myers Dear Katchy, The only rule that we have is that there are no rules. We somtimes have Gramsters complaining when they receive two (or more) Grams, so it seems fitting that we should have two Gramsters using one.
