For more information, see Your Newsletter at http://www.money.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Your_Newsletter1&Template=/TaggedPage/TaggedPageDisplay.cfm&TPLID=35&ContentID=9270 In the same issue of the newsletter, the script for one of ANS's "Money Talks" programs also appears - by Matthew Rockman on the subject of military payment certificates. Boling announces for ANA board - Freeland and Myers write about the SS - fake handstamps by Joe Boling [this article appeared in Gram 1518 with the byline of Fred Schwan. It made no sense that way, but it happened. The item is repeated here with the correct byline for the record. We are very sorry about the confusion.--Ed.] At the MSNS show this past weekend I asked over a dozen clubs to nominate me for the office of governor of the ANA for the 2007-2009 term. If you are an ANA member or an officer in an ANA member club, and would like to have nomination forms for this purpose, email me at joeboling@aol.com. For some reason, ANA has not placed the forms on its web site. One must order then directly from the executive director. But I have already done that, so I can email them to you as needed. In the Winter FUN-Topics magazine, there are six pages devoted to the ANA summer seminar, mostly about the military numismatics course. One article was written by Dan Freeland, the other by Bill Myers. Both had FUN scholarships to the 2007 seminar, and one stipulation of a FUN scholarship is that the recipient write an article about the experience for FUN-Topics. The articles are illustrated in color, with Allied fest certificates (lire), military fest certificates (series 062, endorsed for the ANA course), class photos, a ration card, and a canteen chit booklet. It's great exposure for our branch of the hobby (note that it is NOT an "industry" (ugh - yuk)). Two years ago I bought at auction a set of Yugoslavia notes stamped VERIFICATO for Montenegro. I needed only the 500 dinara denomination, but had to buy several others (all in one lot). Upon receiving them, I measured the stamp for the proper diameter (31.3mm), and they passed that test. But the stamps all looked too uniform - not like you would expect to see on notes that had been stamped by hand. So I put my 20x glass on them, and lo - all the overstamps had been applied by ink jet printer. The notes were genuine, but the stamps were not. I returned the lot with a plea that the auctioneer put me in touch with the consignor so I could buy some of the fakes at appropriate prices. I heard nothing more. At MSNS this year I found the consignor. This is not the first time that I have returned a spurious piece to an auctioneer, only to encounter the same piece in a dealer's stock a year or more later. This time, the dealer agreed immediately when I showed him the stamps through my 20x glass (he had not been informed by the auctioneer of what the problem was with his notes - only that they were suspected of having fake handstamps - so he had not used enough power when looking at them to see the colored pixels mixed with the black, as laid down by the ink jet printer). Interestingly, he also had some genuine stamps, mixed with the fake ones - his supplier in Europe may have been deceived by HIS supplier, not realizing that some of the stamps were recent technology. So, I was able to buy several good/bad pairs of the Montenegro pieces. ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question 173, difficulty 2. Where was the main office of the E A Wright Bank Note Company located? Questions 172, difficulty 2. Breakers Navy Recreation Center chits were printed by what company and in how many reported varieties? Answers and comments: there was a great silence on the Breakers Navy Recreation Center chits question, but I better be careful about what I say because I was mistaken in making that same comment in 1518 (see mail call). I thought that I was being very clever by (again) taking a question from the prevoius day's Gram. Whether that confused or otherwise disuaded readers from responding, I do not know. Nonetheless, the printer was the Globe ticket company and two varieties of the chit have been identified. ========================================== Editorial ========================================== Sixty-five years ago today, the United States entered World War II when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. As Franklin Roosevelt said, it was a day of infamy. For me it is a day of reflection. The war shaped the adult lives of my parent's generation and certainly mine as well. Even though the direct memories of the population of that day and the entire war are fading, the country and world will never forget and will never be the same again. Of course that day was one of those days were everyone remembers where they were like most of us remember where we were when we learned of the 9.11 attacks and some of us remember the news of the Kennedy assination. My overwhelming feeling about Pearl Harbor is admiration for the sacrifices made by an entire generation in response to those difficult times. -- When I posed the questions about Series F and G defense and war bonds, I now only knew that Jim Downey would respond, but also that he would say that he had answered it before. I also suspected that he would have the final answer. He did and he did (sort of). After he sent an email, we talked for a long time on the phone. We figured it out with only one little catch. Today he followed up (he is very good about that) with an image of the missing link so to speak. We can now say with assurance that Series F and G bonds were both issued with the war bond legend and without it (simply listed as savings bonds). While I am very happy to put that little mystery to rest, we will now have to start keeping records to determine which of these various issues actually exist in collections. ========================================= Mail Call (send mail to MPCGram@yahoo.com) =========================================== Dear Gram, This is in answer to quiz qquestion 172. My answer to the question is a 500 Peso, Osmena-Hernandez signature, P101a with Serial Number F00001947*. I have been chasing all star note serial numbers on the under US administration Philippine Series for about 7 years. That 500 peso note is the only one reported at the high denomination. Do you know who has it as I need to get the Position Letter and number from the note for my documentation. I am hoping in 3-4 months to publish my findings on Star Notes of the under US issues and indicate rarity or lack thereof. If any MPCGram readers have star notes, I would appreciate sending me the P-number, Serial Number and Position Letter and Number to make my listing more complete. Thanks, Ray Czahor Dear Ray, Thank you for the very nice response. Your letter actually arrived in time to be inclued in the response to the question, but I did not recognize your mail and missed it. Sorry. Nonetheless, it is an interesting letter. I do have some additional information. The 500 peso VICTORY star was in the collection of Guy Davis (I think that is correct). When he died, his collection was sold at auction in the Philippines. An American at the auction bought the 500 as a favor for another American collector who arranged it for yet a third collector who still has the note. I can get the information for you, but it might take awhile. Ray, we would sure love to see you at the Fest!
