From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2007 11:17 AM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: *****SPAM***** MPCGram 1532 MPC Gram News Letter =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Series 8, no 1532 Wednesday, March 7, 2007 Feller and Feller Progressing Silent Witnesses by Ray and Steve Feller is progressing rutinely through the manufacturing process according to reports from the printer. The proofs were approved last week. One interesting (stupid) mistake was found. The title on the spine was not the same as the front cover! The incorrect title was Silent Witnesses: World War II Civilian Camp Money rather than the correct ...Civilian Camp Money of World War II. The error was corrected and the error proof cover was retained (as an expensive) souvenir for the Fellers. Some of the details have been finalized. The book will sell for $35. Prepublication estimates had been as high as $65, but the publisher stated that the support of advertisers: Mel Steinberg, David Seelye, Bill Rosenblum, Ian Marshall, Krause Publications and others allowed this bargain pricing. The book will be unveiled at MPC Fest on the morning of March 24 and a book signing will follow immediately. Non Festers who would like to attend are welcome. Additional book signings are will be held in April in Cedar Rapids, Boston and (hopefully) other places. ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question 184. Difficuly 1. Who wrote the standard reference book on POW and concentration camp money of the 20th Century? Yesterdays Question 183. Difficuly 1. What was the last series of MPC with the $5 denomination the same size as the $10? Answers and comments: Bill Myers and Jack Hunter correctly identified Series 481 as the last series with the $5 and $10 the same size. By implication then, Seires 521 was he first with the reduced size $5. ========================================== Editorial ========================================== I have started watching the Victory at Sea videos. Some of the scenes I have seen many times in other places, a few I have seen a few times elsewhere, and many, many are new to me. There is some great WWII video here, but I have not seen a hint of anything numismatic--yet. Back to the stamp show purchases. I bought several covers demonstrating veraious aspects of the war. I am not very familiar with the rules and implementation of censorship, but it was more widespread than I thought. Certainly, I knew that all letters coming from oversea theaters of operation were censored. I do not think that domestic mail was censored, and I did not think that civilian international mail was censored. Apparantly I was wrong. I have a cover here from the show from Mexico to Long Island dated 13 (possibly 18) September 1943. It was opened and resealed with classic censorship tape. The tape at the left says EXAMINED BY 40012. That is interesting enough, but only now did I even bother to look at the stamp. It is a beauty! It is a standard size definitive World War II patriotic stamp! It has a beatiful striding miss (decidedly miss) Liberty striding right lifting a torch and carrying a sword in a menacing manner and wearing a helmet. She is circled by a ring of stars. At first count I thought that there were 12 stars for the original 12 Festers. Then in a nationalcentric moment I thought that there were 13 stars for the original 13 American colonies (how stupid was that though!). Now I think that there are 14 or 15 stars. I do not know enough (much at all really) about Mexican history and lore to know if those have significance to Mexico. The main legend is in line with the theme: America unida defiende su libertad--America united defends its liberty. I do not know what happened to my world wide stamp catalog. It is not on my shelf where it should hve been. Wait, I see on a top shelf my world wide stamp album from the 1960s (possibly 1950s). I will climb the ladder and pull it down. It was hard to get to. Actually, it was easy to get to, it was the ladder that was hard to get to! Nonetheless, I pulled it down and found Mexico. The stamp is illustrated. Unfortunately, I did not have the stamp in the album (had none on that entire two page spread). I had hoped to discover that the stamp was part of a set, but if it is it is not clear from the album. Nor could I find any other WWII related stamps. The internet did not do me any good. I could not find a source to purchase single stamps of Mexico or any good information. I was sure that I would find a place with the stamp illustrated and I could put up a link here so that you could see this beauty. I hope that it is as common as US stamps of that era so that I can find some sheets (or at least a lot of unused singles) to use for souvenirs. Any ideas out there? Oh yes, price of the cover (now lost on my desktop) $1.50. ========================================= Mail Call (send mail to MPCGram@yahoo.com) =========================================== Dear Esteamed Editor: I side with those who believe the writers of the legislation related to selling or buying of military medals are wasting their time and our money. They surely have better things to do than that. I "wear" the medals, decorations, devices, etc. I was awarded in my shadow box and alternate with pride for the recognition and embarrassment that I was talked into getting them out of the old foot locker.
