In spite of all of the work to be done, everyone found time to play with, exchange, buy, sell, trade and lie about notes. Some big deals are rumored to be cooking. Hopefully, news will follow. In a first, the Fest Casino opened early this year and also introduced a surprise first. The 2006 Fest quarter has the portrait of Harold "First Fester" Kroll. These coins work in the gaming machines in the casino and of course are also valid in all other places where MFC is accepted. The introduction of coins for use with paper MFC is similar to the way that US coinage was introduced in Viet Nam for use with MPC. Apparantly, the coinage will be valid with any subsequent issues of MFC, but this has not been confirmed by Fest authorities. When the coins entered circulation a trend to call it by a nickname developed. Initially, collectors looking at the portrait thought that it (the coin) should be called a loonie, but then remembered that this name was taken (by the Canadian dollar). Harold quickly became the accepted name. Yes, simply Harold. Hey, can you give me four Harolds for a buck? Or should be be harolds? Nonetheless, the harolds are more popular at the Fest than the inept US presential dollars. Fest Bourse Near Excitement is building for the Fest bourse tomorrow. Keith Bauman had to withdraw because of a family medical emergency. The empty table has been filled from the waiting list by Joe Boling who has promissed to bring a selection of interesting material. The bourse is Friday, March 23 1000 to 1730. It is being held at the Port Clinton Holiday Inn Express, 50 NE Catawba Road, Port Clinton, Ohio 43452 (419 732 7322). The bourse dealers with confirmed tables are: David Seelye Fred Schwan BNR Press Harold Kroll Carlson Chambliss Al Galzer Benton Coin (Bill Yanchick)l Ian Marshall Joe Boling Kevin Neidy ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question 191. Difficuly 1. Whose portrait appears on the current Fest quarter? Yesterdays Question 190. Difficuly 3. The Ananda Temple at Pagan appears on which general issue of Japanese Invasion Money? Answers and comments: Bill Myers correctly answered Burma. ========================================== Editorial ========================================== The lead news stories pretty well sumarize what is going on at Fest headquarters. We are certainly sad that Keith Bauman had to withdraw from the Fest bourse. The Baumans will be in the thoughts and prayers of all Festers. I suggest that Gramsters also keep them in their prayers. Keith is known to many of you as a bourse dealer who is seen at many shows around this part of the country. He carries a wide variety of paper money including MPC. However, I think that Keith is better known in MPC circles as the wife of Sue who is the artist who has created several pieces of art relating to MPC. The best known of these is the beautiful artwork used to illustrate the cover of the third and fourth editions of the MPC book. In honor of the Baumans coming to their first Fest, I had arranged to have the original painting on display at Camp May. I think that I will now hold that back for next year on the assumption and hope that the Baumans will be able to come to Fest 9! I am sure that I will go down this editorial road many times in the next two years, but I think that we should be looking forward to making Fest 10 a truly spectacular event. I have a few minor ideas, bu they are more in the way of evolutionary improvements. We need some ideas of how to make it really spectacular. ========================================= Mail Call (send mail to MPCGram@yahoo.com) =========================================== Dear Editor, As far as I know, all issues of POGS are still valid. Joe Dear Whomever It May Concern, Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the Fest this year. However, I would still like to participate in any way I can. Could I possibly buy $5 worth of lottery tickets? I only have a $25 bill in the current series, so that would mean getting change (which also means getting more notes to add to my collection). Would that at all be possible? Thank You, Sam Spiegel Dear Sam, Thank you for your order. We will take care of your tickets and collect in MFC062 at the summer seminar. Possibly we will send you the change along with any prizes that you win. The Fest War Bond Lottery (raffle) has some REALLY GREAT prizes with more coming in. We have just confirmed that there will be two pattern Fest challenge coins. These are the only two such patterns prduced. There will also be two patterns of the Harolds (see news story). They are also the only ones produced. There is a also a specimen set of Fest bonds. This set is probably unique. The lottery is Sunday morning. We can still take reservations for tickets for payment later. Editor Dear Editor, I really apologize for missing this year. Good intentions pave my way to the nether regions. I am tempted to send money as an advance for next year just to see if that will get Carolyn & me to do something. However, that is about time that our new house could be finished (that is really where all our money is going these days). We'll see. Another thought. If you are heading with the Boss to Colo Spngs this summer??? You could come thru beautiful Glenwood Iowa and stop off. We are just off of I-29 just south of I-80 (can go west or south from there to get to ANA Hq. We'd be happy to host you & Judy while here. I could also introduce you to the Stamp Center at Boy's Town. We have a very large file of military covers, etc. as well as several volunteers who are experts with the material. I think you would find several items of interest. I sent a "Show & Tell" package care of the fest Hq. Hopefully it does not get lost. I am not old enough to remember mail censorship from WW II. I did find several articles on the internet, including one that has what appears to be a good bibliography. Have a great Fest and I hope to be there in 08. rusty Dear Rusty, Thank you for the nice letter and invitation, but there really is no excuse for not being here this year. Your remote show n tell has arrived. I believe that this is a first--remote show n tell. I like it. I think that this might be an idea to be developed for the future and especially for Fest 10 (see editorial). We might want to accept absentee exhibits for Fest 10 (or even Fest 9). As a little aside and brag. Joe Boling and I have championed the concept of absentee exhibiting at the ANA convention. The system is not completely open, but it is possible to exhibit without being in attendance for the entire week of an ANA convention. Obviously, we think that this is a good idea.
