I read about Chuck Parsons and his mission last year. Interestingly, I discussed it with Guerilla specialist, C.M. Nielsen, in Salt Lake City. He didn't think much of Parsons, believing him to be pretty much a blowhard. I sent the following input for the Gram in early April. Don't think it made it in but maybe it got lost in the noise. Thought the item of "victory packages" would be of great interest to Gramsters to see if anyone has ever come across one. Philippiine Mailbid Sale X almost finished and will be in the mail early June. Hope you find this of interest to Gramsters: The Great Raid on the Philippine Cabanatuan P.O.W camp Since my primary interest is Philippine Numismatics and the country's history, I was happy to obtain the following book about two weeks ago: "The Great Raid on Cabanatuan, Rescuing the Doomed Ghosts of Bataan and Corregidor" by William B. Breuer, 1994 edition. I previously read about the small US Army special force that inflitrated Japanese lines and saved about 505 POWs before the Japanese could execute them in early 1945. However, I had never read about the details of support from the Filipinos and other infiltrated organized to smuggle goods into the camp. Three of them were brave women who organized an underground effort, including boxcars, to get medical supplies, vegetables and mail to the POWs in 1942 through 1944. One fact I hadn't seen documented before was on General MacArthur. After he realized President Roosevelt and General George Marshall had cut off any aid to the Philippines and diverted all $$, troops, and resources to fight Hitler in Europe, he planned to die with his troops on Corregidor. However, Roosevelt ordered him to Australia to reconstitute and plan a Pacific Invasion force. Thinking there were troops on Australia already, MacArthur reluctantly went but promised his troops on Bataan and Corregidor, he would return in six months (July 1942). Of course that didn't happen because there were no troops in Australia and he would have to start from scratch. Another fact of interest to us WWII collectors was also mentioned in the book. In August, 1943, word was coming from the Philippines that Filipinos where getting disillusioned and succumbing to Japanese anti-American brainwashing that was continually going on. His G2, a Col Whitney proposed a small package of scarce items be smuggled and distributed into the Philippines. The package contained cigarettes, matches, chewing gum, candy bars, sewing kits, and pencils. On the front side of the package was American and Philippine flags; on the other side was the phrase, "I shall return" over General Mac-Arthur's signature. Millions of these "victory packages" flooded the islands including many that were slipped into the Cabanatuan Camp and gave a morale boost to the prisoners. The mystery for collectors and Gramsters, is where are evidence of these packages. In over 40 years I haven't ever seen one! By the way, this book will be a lot in my upcoming Philippine Mailbid X sale coming out in May. If you want a copy, please contact me at "cookiejarpi@verizon.net". Note this is a new email address for contacting me. Ray Czahor Email: cookiejarpi@verizon.net ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question 196. Can it be? Yes, we have gone through another dry spell. It was the result of the normal procrastination, but some legitimate travel/numismatic research and technology issues also got in the way. I was able to get one Gram out introducing my trip to DC for MPC research. Well, the trip to the BEP was very productive. As is often the case, I failed in proving or solving some matters that I planned, but then had success in some unexpected areas. I will try to get the info worked up soon. Doug, The Wiz, has been playing with the electronics again so at the moment we are not able to get automotatic transmission of the Gram. Instead it must wait for him to broadcast it. As it stands now, if he is out of town, no Gram. However, he is not called The Wiz for nothing and I am sure that he will have it fixed fairly soon. I am about to try to solve a tech problem related to the Gram, research etc. I have put this off because of fear of disaster (and expense), but today I am going to try to get the internet up on my laptop with my cell phone. If (when?) I solve this, it should help with travel, research, and Gram issues. Yes, I know that many of you do this now. I see it done everywhere, but things like this never go well for me. Obviously, you will likely hear more about this in the future. My Bank Note Reporter arrived yesterday. It incudes a great book review of Feller and Feller by Kerry Rogers. The best part is that it is a real review! I can hear you now, but these have been rare in numismatics. Yes they have. What we usually get is a news release or at best a news story crafted from a news release. That is far from being a book review. So I congratulate Kerry for a good review (entertaining in its own right and informative) AND to David Kranz and the Bank Note Reporter for creating and running the review. Having said that, I also want to praise SPMC and Fred Reed who is running real reviews in Paper Money. In line with the comments above, I think that this is an important step forward (possibly only a small step, but certainly a step and absolutely in the right direction). I expect to start writing more reviews myself because of this encouraging trend. Hopefully, I will write some for both of these publications. ========================================= Mail Call (send mail to MPCGram@yahoo.com) =========================================== Dear Gram, Happy to have a few Grams, but I had to dig them out of my spam box. Of course that is bad enough, but with the infrequent Grams, I do not think to check every day. Any ideas? Cuneyd Dear C, The Wiz will solve the problems I think.
