I read about Chuck Parsons and his mission last year. Interestingly, I discussed it with Guerilla specialist, C.M. Nielsen, in Salt Lake City. He didn't think much of Parsons, believing him to be pretty much a blowhard. I sent the following input for the Gram in early April. Don't think it made it in but maybe it got lost in the noise. Thought the item of "victory packages" would be of great interest to Gramsters to see if anyone has ever come across one. Philippiine Mailbid Sale X almost finished and will be in the mail early June. The Great Raid on the Philippine Cabanatuan P.O.W camp Since my primary interest is Philippine Numismatics and the country's history, I was happy to obtain the following book about two weeks ago: "The Great Raid on Cabanatuan, Rescuing the Doomed Ghosts of Bataan and Corregidor" by William B. Breuer, 1994 edition. I previously read about the small US Army special force that inflitrated Japanese lines and saved about 505 POWs before the Japanese could execute them in early 1945. However, I had never read about the details of support from the Filipinos and other infiltrated organized to smuggle goods into the camp. Three of them were brave women who organized an underground effort, including boxcars, to get medical supplies, vegetables and mail to the POWs in 1942 through 1944. One fact that I had not seen documented before was on General MacArthur. After he realized President Roosevelt and General George Marshall had cut off any aid to the Philippines and diverted all $$, troops, and resources to fight Hitler in Europe, he planned to die with his troops on Corregidor. However, Roosevelt ordered him to Australia to reconstitute and plan a Pacific Invasion force. Thinking there were troops on Australia already, MacArthur reluctantly went but promised his troops on Bataan and Corregidor, he would return in six months (July 1942). Of course that didn't happen because there were no troops in Australia and he would have to start from scratch. Another fact of interest to us WWII collectors was also mentioned in the book. In August, 1943, word was coming from the Philippines that Filipinos where getting disillusioned and succumbing to Japanese anti-American brainwashing that was continually going on. His G2, a Col Whitney proposed a small package of scarce items be smuggled and distributed into the Philippines. The package contained cigarettes, matches, chewing gum, candy bars, sewing kits, and pencils. On the front side of the package was American and Philippine flags; on the other side was the phrase, "I shall return" over General Mac-Arthur's signature. Millions of these "victory packages" flooded the islands including many that were slipped into the Cabanatuan Camp and gave a morale boost to the prisoners. The mystery for collectors and Gramsters, is where are evidence of these packages. In over 40 years I haven't ever seen one! By the way, this book will be a lot in my upcoming Philippine Mailbid X sale coming out in May. If you want a copy, please contact me at "cookiejarpi@verizon.net". Note this is a new email address for contacting me. ***************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question 201. Difficulty 1. Bit of a circutius route I must agree. Later today I hope to visit the interesting looking museum at Hill Air Force Base. Hopefully, there will be enough of interest to require a report. Last night I had dinner with nephew and Fester David Schwan. Of course Dave is well known as the artist whose work has appeared on various issues of Fest money and Harolds too. He has a new job in Salt Lake City so it will be difficult to get him to Fest 9 I think. He was also just married in May. Boy has his life changed in one Fell Swoop. ========================================= Mail Call (send mail to MPCGram@yahoo.com) =========================================== Gram, Wow, here we go again and again and again!!! Round and round she goes and where she stops nobody know!!! More smoke and mirrors!!! It seems to me that we have a great hobby that is just being ruined by the few bullies that want to keep controversy alive in our hobby. We have a great group of people that just love this hobby and they do things that help and grow this hobby. They donate their time, money and talent with no hidden agenda only to have their good works slammed by those that are either to lazy or not talented enough to do the same thing. Someone taught me that you can be in the spotlight by two ways; 1. by making others around you look bad and you great or 2. by working hard and out performing those around you making those around you look good but you look great. It seems to me that we need to choice those candidates in the ANA that will set an example of hard work and out performing those around them rather than those that make others look bad. It is time for our leaders to choice principles and ethics rather the school yard personalities that continue to bully and intimidate others to make themselves look good. If those who find fault would do something constructive with their energy our hobby would excel and grow. Look at all the candidates and see just "Who is the school yard bullies" vs "Who actually grow the hobby by good works and actions". Don't just read their words, look at their actions and conversations with others to see their true "hidden agenda". Give me a "freshman" candidate that is willing to work hard and excel outperforming others to grow our hobby trying new things along the way and making mistakes rather than the "professional" who only makes others look bad to further his own agenda and make himself look good. So in our upcoming ANA election PLEASE VOTE ONLY for the candidates that will grow the hobby by good works and excel our hobby by practicing principles and ethics rather than those bullies that slam the candidates that do the good work and grow our hobby. Respectfully Edward Arrich LM 5512 Dear Ed, Thank you for the nonpartisan comments. In response to our editorial, we heard from both endoresed candidates and none that were not endoresed. We received one phone call that supported the concept of having made an endoresment. Thanks for writing.
