Movie Review
by Steve Feller
"American Pastime" is an excellent new movie
on WWII.
Set in a
Japanese-American relocation camp in Abraham,
Utah the movie clearly shows the tension between
the local residents of this town and the camp
inmates.
Several scenes of money occurred, for example
of greenbacks being gathered for a large wager
on the outcome of a baseball camp between the
inmates and the townspeople.
We also see dollars being spent in the town
by camp residents. The townspeople included some
of the camp guards.
I won’t give away more of the plot except to
say the movie does an excellent job of depicting
camp life. There are some stereotypical
behaviors shown on both sides as well as a
predictable love story. The movie is very well
photographed and one senses the utter
frustration of fellow-citizens being put in a
camp. Thus, the use of baseball helps us to
understand that these are Americans in the camp.

Editorial
==========================================
The aviation museum at Hill Air Force Base is
well above average. It has some great aircraft
from just about every era. It seems that they
have worked out a deal where the museum is also
the Utah aviation museum. This certainly helps
coordinate resources.
Still, the emphasis was on military aircraft
of which they have a marvelous array including
some real nice WWII bombers.
There was not too much of a numismatic
nature. There was one nice (long) short snorter
and a few other notes in various displays, but
nothing of consequence.
There were two really interesting pieces of
WWII trench art. Both were bracelets made from
the skin of wrecked aircraft. One of these had
an engraved design that was very hard to make
out. The other had a homeland Japan coin mounted
on it. This type of item is more often seen with
an Australian (US minted) coin so I thought that
it was a nice item. The lighting in that section
was very poor so I did not even try a photo.
As you would expect, there were quite a few
medal groups displayed. None were particularly
interesting.
There are no medals of honor displayed, but
there is some interesting MOH information which
I will discuss next time.
In the meantime, you can visit the museum

Gram,h The ANA summer seminar scholarship is
a
wonderful thing and I want to thank all the
Gramsters who donated to this fund.
Some of you know me, some don't but I thank
all of you for this scholarship.
In the past I have raised money at the summer
seminar for the YN scholarships and I have
funded several scholarships for our local three
local clubs as I believe that the summer seminar
is the best value for the money in our
hobby.
This year I was not going to attend unless I
received a scholarship as my budget was not
plentiful enough for me to go.
So thanks to your generosity, I will attend
and help raise funds for the YN this year.
Also I will help raise money for the military
scholarship fund and help send some one next
year.
Respectfully
Edward Arrich LM 5512
