Summer Seminar Opens
The 7th Military Numismatics Summer Seminar
opened today. The schedule is a little different
this year because of the attempts to accommodate
the Memphis show dates.
Mostly the staff has failed miserably at
meeting challenge coin challenges. The one
exception was Gail Baker who was caught at a an
inopportune moment when she was not likely to
have her coin--but she did.
Military instruction started Sunday night
with MPC Boot Camp. This spin off from the
military classes is in a format known as mini
seminar. These classes are for two or three
evenings. Schwan has been the instructor for
each of these.
The Boling detecting counterfeit military
notes class (actually detecting counterfeit
world notes) starts on Monday morning.
Many military collecting buffs and seminar
students have been seen in the area: Tony James,
Ken Bressett, Wendell Woloka and others are in
attendance.

Previous Question: Question 203. Difficulty
1. What contractor printed supplemental A
yen?
Answers and comments: Bill Myers correctly
answered Stecher-Traung.

Editorial

I have had a discussion with Joe about my
comments about the intended places of use for A
and B yen. I was amazed that he had not
responded at length. His only real comment was
that there were lots of other places that might
have been targets for supplemental yen use. I
had predicted this response from him.
Taiwan seems possible, but China not so much
to me. I have to admit that I had thought of
that and concluded against it. Now I might
reconsider as intended B yen for Japan and A yen
for somewhere else. This I base mostly on the
printing data which I admitted was not real
conclusive.
Joe was not swayed much by my argument that
the use of Series 100 for both yen types meant
that they were intended for use in different
areas. I still think that that is a strong and
reasonable conclusion.

===========================================
Dear Gram,
In reference to the question on "intended
place of use for the A Yen", it appears that
both you and Joe failed to check our
authoritative source for answers to these types
of questions. WWII Remembered clearly states
that "two distinct varieties of AM yen were
prepared. Distinguished by a large A or B in the
background of the design, they were intended for
use in Korea and Japan, respectively."
Would love to be at the summer seminar - have
fun.
Take Care,
Ron
Dear Ron,
Cool, and thanks. However, there is some
wiggle room. The issue that Joe raised in
response to a championship question was about
the intentions at the time of manufacture. Then
there is even the slight chance that there could
be an error in Remembered (gasp).
