Series 8, no 1559 Tuesday July 3, 2007
YN auction on Independence Day
by Joe Boling
Lots of interest to Festers that are
appearing in the week two YN auction at the 39th
ANA summer seminar (you missed your chance, Ski)
are (descriptions taken from the catalog -
accuracy not guaranteed - trust your bid
executor to check the lot before bidding):
Lot D5 - playing cards with pictures of
Malaya currency 1941-42, and a BCOF token from
Japan (presumably SB916).
Lot D6 - military fest certificates from a
mini-fest in Melbourne, Australia. Denominated
$5, $10, $20 (presumably Australian dollars,
though that currency did not exist at the time
most fest-related history took place).
Lot D7 - Australian military forces hat badge
1948-53.
Lot D32 - Allied fest certificate series 1944
5 francs SN B00000001* Lot D33 - Allied training
certificate series 1944 10 francs SN A00000001A.
On white paper with "training only"
overprint.
Lot D38 - lot of three AFC notes. Five anas
series 1944, marked "Training," SN T00000001*.
Twenty anas series 1944A, SN B00000001A. Sixty
francs series 1944 surcharged "*TWENTY [francs]
ONLY*", stamped Summer Seminar 2007 on back, SN
A00000001*. Total three pieces, all serial #1.
Lot D46 - ANA Casino Night scrip (7 April
2006, Atlanta), set of five different.
Lot D121 - mystery lot, consisting of scraps
from the floor of Great Lakes Banknote Company.
[Since the only known recent output from there
is the recently-issued series 1944 francs, it is
presumed that the contents may contain waste
from that printing.] Lot D122 - box of shredded
MFC series 1944. Good packing material.
Lot D134 - Cohabitation Fest notes, set of
four, from minifest held at Boling housewarming
in November (18)06. Denominated in frontier
tools and expendables (powder, lead, flints, axe
head).
Lot D141 - Pearl Harbor defense bond
advertisement and Europe-Africa-Middle East
campaign medal from WWII.
The catalog says "medal and bar," but does
not mention a ribbon.
Unlotted (in tomorrow's supplemental catalog)
- AAFES pogs, 78 pieces, 48 types, $14.35 face
value. Feel the Iraqi grit in this lot. [Since
this lot is way at the end of the sale, it will
likely go cheaply.] There is no reserve
published on any of the above lots. Contact your
bidding representative in Colorado Springs to
arrange inspection and bidding, or email
joeboling@aol.com before 1800 Wednesday to leave
email bids.
AF Francs circulate at Springs
Allied Fest francs were introduced on the
first day of the summer seminar. Denominations
ranged from one through 80 francs. Students
immediately used funds to buy books for class
and some prudent investors bought Fest bonds
with excess funds.
Some students were seen stooping to silly
collecting activities like trading notes among
themselves.

and Stripes newspaper. See this link for

Editorial
==========================================
It is hard to believe that it is Tuesday.
Time flies here at the summer seminar. It is a
sensory overload.
I have had a great time and belive that most
everyone has. I can certainly report that the
tension that all but ruined the 2007 semianr is
NOT here this year. It is a shame that so much
controversy surrouned the 2006 seminar.
Nonetheless, this is a great thing.
Plan on coming next year. Of course you can
(and
should) apply for a military scholarship next
year, but you really should also apply for an
ANA scholarship and also look around for
schoalrships from other numismatic
organizations. You will be glad that you did. I
will try to remind you when the time comes.
After a busy day in class where I probably
learned as much as I taught, the agenda for
tonight includes programs for the entire seminar
community by Tony James and Joe Boling. One on
Australian military numismatics and one on world
counterfeits (you figure out which is which).
They should be good.

Dear Gram,
Re Ebay #180133089369. This is a circulated
Series
641 $1 (1st Printing) that went for $300.
Don't know if I missed something in this
offering or just a couple of bidders getting
carried away. It was interesting because when
the bid was around $150 they were still showing
the bidders, after that they went to "private"
bidding. Was this to keep others from telling
them they may be overbidding, or to try to sell
them one for about $30? Or was there something
special about this note? Take Care,
Ron
Dear Gram,
What new format?
Joe
