ANA Philippine Program
by Ray Czahor
1. The 5th annual Philippine Collectors
Forum(PCF) meeting will be held during the ANA
World's Fair of Money August 8-12, 2007 at the
Milwaukee, WI Midwest Airlines Convention Center.
The PCF is on the ANA agenda to meet on Friday,
August 10th, at 1:30PM for 4 hours. We plan to
show David Lange's outstanding presentation he
gave back in 1993 on US Coinage for the
Philippines. David Provost will talk on "Laura
Gardin Fraser and the 1947 MacArthur
Commemoratives.
The PCF will also man a club table and need
collectors to man it. If you are attending, please
let me know.l This is a fun activity as you get to
meet lots of collectors and hand give-aways to the
young
collectors. I will have a locked case available
for
displaying interesting Philippine Numismatic
items.
2. I had originally planned to have
representatives from either IGC or NGC come to PCF
and talk about grading standards, fakes, upgrade
procedures, etc and answer questions on Philippine
coin grading. (Ron Guth of PCGS came to our San
Francisco PCF meeting two years ago to discuss
these topics and it was very educational and
worthwhile to all.) However, both IGC and NGC have
turned us down. Therefore, Ken Seymore and I
discussed holding a seminar on the grading
services and our experiences with them during the
PCF in Milwaukee. To facilitate this discussion,
he and I have prepared a "Grading Services Survey"
which is attached to this email. This is a 56K
Microsoft Word document so not too big. It has 7
pages but for most collectors only portions will
be applicable and shouldn't take more than 10-15
minutes to fill out. We
do want comments and observations. If you can
fill
it in on-line and sent it back attached to your
email, that would be great. If you print it out
and mail it, it will take 58 cents in stamps.
Please get it back to us by 31 July. We will
summarize results of the discussions and the
survey in a future email. (Ron Guth confirmed he
may attend the meeting to hear the
results.)
3. Philippine Mailbid Sale X with 2025 lots has
been out for 3 weeks now and I have received over
$35,000
in bids from 50 bidders. The mailbid closes
at
midnight PDT on 31 July so please get your bids
in soon. The mailbid listing and scans of
requested lots is on my web site:
http://mysite.verizon.net/cookiejarpi/
Current bids on lots will be posted on my web
site about the 18th or 20th of July and again on
27th or 28th.
4. I have in stock the following books/study if
you are interested:
a. Lyman Allen's 5th (2005-2006) edition of
"US/Philippine Coins." This edition contains new
varieties and updated certified coins' listings
from the different grading services and also
includes information from my 1906S research study.
Price is
$27 Postpaid to US and APO/FPO addresses. Price
to Overseas addresses is $30 for airmail postage.
b. "History and Mintage Philippine
Counterstamped Coins 1828-1839" by Quint Jose MA.
Oropilla Y Fortich, M.D. It is well researched
containing original archival documents, many
photos, and important information about
counterstamped coins never before published. This
is a large (9 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches) hardbound 225
page book weighing about 4 lbs for shipping. For
any Philippine or Spanish Colonies collector
having interest in this unique series, you need
this book. Cost in the US is $120 plus $5 for
insured book rate.
c. Also available: "The Philippine 1906S
Philippine Peso, Die Characteristics: Genuine and
Fake."
August 2004. I initially presented this
research study at PCF 2004. It has 21 pages with
13 of those color photographs. Cost is $8.00
postpaid within US and $10.00 overseas. It was
published in the ANA Journal, Summer 2006
edition.
