Series 8, no 1561 Tueday July 17, 2007
Memphis 2007 Report
by Roger Urce
Memphis is hot and sticky in July, especially
at the Redbirds game, but that was outside.
Inside it was cool and comfortable. The bourse
this year extended back more rows than in 06
which afforded the oportunity to visit more
dealers. I was able to find a number of number
of German winterhelp notes, one more note to add
to my Chinese puppet bank collection and a Burma
issue featuring a peacock. A few less common JIM
notes were also found and came home with me.
This year's exhibits were highlighted by a
collection of short snorters put together by
Neil Shafer. The exhibit featured individual
notes and notes taped together in both large and
small rolls and was artistically presented with
much educational information. I was also able to
view a set of about a dozen Yugoslavian partisan
notes in excellent condition. The M2C2 meeting
was attended by about a dozen or so. There was
no pay but two items were available. The first
was a give-away by Harold Kroll consisting of a
circulated 10 Peso Rizal momument note with
"MEMPHIS" stamped on the face and the Memphis
post-mark on the back.
The postmark itself this year was unique in
one respect in that the date was 7-7-07 (Al
Glaser's lucky day!!)> We will not have
another date with all sevens until 7-7-77 which
will make it during the year of FEST LXXVIII.
The second note available was made up especially
for the meeting and again featured a 10 Peso
Rizal note. These were uncirculated and came
from a complete pack of 100.
The back of the note bore the same "MEMPHIS"
stamp in red while the face bore a specially
made oval stamp in the style of the JAPWANCAP
overstamps. The stamp reads "Issued 7 July 2007
at Memphis, TN" on the top line and the bottom
two lines read "VALUED IN FMC FUNDS ONLY" and
"NOT REDEEMABLE IN US DOLLARS." The notes(block
#29) were serial numbered with the serial number
matching the last two digits of the actual
serial number of the note. This was the case
with two exceptions as the original pack had no
notes ending in 10 and 25 as these were
apparantly damaged and were replaced with two
replacements. The replacements were marked as
the others and the serial numbers on these began
with the number 1 followed by a space then two
digits (a double replacement). The notes were
offered at $5.00 each with the proceeds going to
the scholarship fund. One of the two
replacements was auctioned and was hammered-down
at $75, the winning bid going to Al Glaser. The
second replacement will be held for the auction
at FEST IX. I will have copies available at the
ANA in Milwaukee. For a scan of the note and
information on obtaining one send an email to
stjasele@optonline.net. I enjoy Memphis and the
opportunity the add some notes, but the best
part, as always, is the company and the chance
to learn about our specialty.

Championship Question Corner
Question 208. Difficulty 2. Who was the
manager of the Frankfurt Barter store?
Previous Question Question 207. Difficulty 2.
Where were 1000 yen AMC notes printed?
Answers and comments: Bill Myers from Iraq
correctly answered that the 1000 yen notes were
printed by the Japanese Finance Ministry
printing bureau. He also said that he answered
from memory because he had mailed his Remembered
home in anticipation of following it shortly. We
question the wisdome of be Rememberedless.

I have been in Casper, Wyoming for about a
week. I have managed a few numismatic
adventures. Casper is an interesting city. It
has but 50,000 folks, but it has about
everything that you could want or expect in a
much larger city. This is accomplished by
unusual combinations. Go in for a root canal and
pick up a pizza on the way out. Car wash and dry
cleaning, no problem. I had kind of realized
this situation, but it became clear when I found
the only coin shop in the area. Coins, insurance
AND storage units. If you buy enough coins you
can insure them and rent a place to store them.
I suppose that this makes sense.
The insurance/storage store had a reasonably
nice selection of coins--if you like modern gold
or silver.
At least the fellow did not look at me like I
was crazy when I asked if he had any paper money
(note that I did not ask for MPC or WWII paper
money which likely would have produced the crazy
look). He said that he did and produced a small
envelope. It was an amazingly poor envelope.
Poor in the sense of preservation. The best note
in the envelope of US type notes was a good plus
$10 national bank note on Lancaster (PA)
National Bank (charter 333), 1902 plain back. At
least the fellow did not have greatly
exaggerated dreams of the value. I bought it out
of desperation and courtesy.
The next adventure at least had a military
numismatics outcome. A brochure for Casper
listed a private WWII aviation museum at the
Casper airport. I called for an appointment. Jim
Good was happy to accommodate and I was in for a
very pleasant afternoon.
Jim Good is champion air racer (you can find
him with a google search). The hangar where he
has his museum is a WWII product. The building
itself was worth the trip (across town, not
across country). It is full of planes, engines,
a few ground vehicles, and miscellaneous
displays/collections.
The rooms at the end of the hangar are a
labyrinth of treasures. There must be something
there for every collector, but you have to dig
to find numismatic items. I found some red and
blue WWII ration tokens and some ration books. I
found a few nondescript notes in the corder of a
case, then I found the prize. I almost missed
it, but at the last moment found an antique
folding fan. Not very exciting you must be
thinking. The fan was made from Japanese
invasion 5 peso notes! It is beautiful. I have a
picture and will certainly work it into the next
Remembered.

Gramsters,
After returning from the 2007 Summer Seminar
and having the best class of the entire summer
seminar I want to thank all of the people who
donated to the scholarship for me to attend this
class.
I want to thank my class mates and the
advanced class mates for all the "special
attention they gave to their "special Ed"
student-me.
I have started to plan for the next year's
seminar and possibly the 2008 MPC Fest.
To those that bid on the YN auction lots that
were outbid, I was the winning bidder on some of
the items and I placed those items in the
scholarship auction for 2008 so Happy Bidding!!!
You have a second chance at acquiring them.
This "Special Ed" saying thanks and sgning
off for now.
Respectfully
Edward Arrich ANA LM 5512
