A. Medina In the spring of 1953 Uncle Sam sent me First Class (Troop Ship) to Okinawa. After 17 days out at sea we arrived at Taiwan on my birthday March 31st. A few days later, we docked at Naha. After taking a much needed shower I converted my "stateside" green for MPC & AMC. Not being numismatically inclined at that time I proceeded to enjoy the pleasures of that small island, by spending all of my money. Of particular interest were the 1000 Yen notes--at that time they were worth approximately $8.00 each. When I realized that for one note I could hire a taxi for a full day, for another note I enjoyed the company of a pleasant female for an afternoon and for one more, all I could drink and eat for that time frame. Needless to say I soon learned to carry a bundle of 10 to 20 notes! Now this many years later I have been known to spend a couple of grand to purchase one note--so when the collecting habit hit, my fortunes soon dwindled! Collecting has had a consuming effect on my life. My best friends are military money collectors and we compete (for the notes we need) at all shows and across the world, through catalog offerings, or through personal trades. Seasons Greetings to All----Enjoy your habit!!! IMPORTANT NOTICE--ANNOUNCEMENT POSTPONED The important announcement that was scheduled for tonight in chat has been postponed. The postponement was caused by bad weather and unanticipated travel arrangements. The announcment will be made soon in the gram and/or in chat. MPC Gram and papermoneyorld.com are very sorry about any inconvenience. ==================================================== Editorial ---------------------------------------------------- We may have to cancel the Fest! Marv Mericle was in Fest city for the past 24 hours and I think that all of the story telling, trading, swapping, and MPC fun possible has been used up--not! Marv was here, and we did have a great time, but there is still plenty left! As announced in the gram a few weeks ago, the Mericle collection is going to be featured in the new MPC book. He delivered the collection here for immaging. Of course he has a great colection, I have seen it before, but he also had surprises for me and for the book! Most of these had to do with some wonderful new MPC vignette illustations. They will make great additions to the book but are not easily featured (by me anywway) here in the gram. Hopefully, we will be able to get back to his visit in the days to come. ==================================================== Mail Call ---------------------------------------------------- Dear Tom, SD postal zone is now zip code 92136 & is located north of the 32nd St. Naval Station.
