I found three nice items to add to my collection under the tree. The highlight was a Second Series 50c Korean MPC Coupon. It will only grade a strong fine, but any of you that have been searching for notes from the Korean or Thai Series know how tough these items are to come by. I believe that a few of them have recently been liberated from Korea or Viet Nam, but no where near enough for all the collectors of MPC. The second item is one that I had not seen before. It is an Army Meal Ticket issued to a WAC that was traveling by train from Cincinnati to Houston and escorting four other troops. I assume that the other four were also female and were recruits that were being shipped to basic training in Texas. The reason I say this is that the Form (which is a War Department Quartermaster Corps Form No.464) was issued by the 1572nd SU, WAC Recruiting District. The item is dated 15 Aug 1944. Surely a WAC Recruiting District would not be providing escort and meals for male enlisted members. Another interesting part of this Form is that it states that the cost per meal would not exceed $1 per meal when served in the dining car of a railroad train and 75c elsewhere. You couldn't buy too many Big Mac's with that could you. Of course in 1944, you couldn't find a Big Mac to buy anyway. But it is a neat fiscal item from World War II. You can see these two items by clicking on the link www.papermoneyworld.com/mpcgram/thurski5.jpg My third gift is a nice addition to my War Bond collection and gives me something to research. It is a "10 Bucks" note issued for the Klamath Victory Parade which was presenting "The Victory Arcade" This event took place on Monday, October 29th, 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. It further states that "Our Quota $740,000 Series E Bonds" and "Lets go over the top tonight". No year is given as part of the date. I assume that it is 1945, because of the liberal usage of the word victory. Also we know that the last War Bond Drive was known as the Victory Loan and ran from Oct 29, 1945 to Dec 8, 1945. Could be that this was the kickoff for the Victory Loan drive in Klamath. BUT, where is Klamath? I know of a Klamath Falls in Oregon, or was there a Klamath County that included Klamath Falls? Anyway, it will give me something to do on these cold winter nights. I hope Santa was as good to you all as he was to me. I thought about Santa over this Christmas Holiday. John and Nancy Wilson have a great collection of notes depicting Santa Claus, but I can't think of a single World War II note that in any way refers to the jolly old elf. Joe and Fred show a picture of a postcard in World War II Remembered that illustrates Santa dropping War Bonds from his sleigh. Look at page 397 to see this item. I have in my collection another neat piece of ephemera, which doesn't picture Santa, but does denote Christmas with the stockings all hung by the chimney with care in hopes that St. Nick soon would be there. Mine is an ad from THE GENERAL TIRE AND RUBBER COMPANY promoting the purchase of War Bonds. Dad is tucking bonds into everyone's stocking while Mom, whose pose looks a lot like Betty Grables hides bonds behind her back for Dad. You can see it at the link www.papermoneyworld.com/mpcgram/thurski6.jpg Hope you all have a Happy New Year. ==================================================== Editorial ---------------------------------------------------- Everyone is doing a good job of sending in comments on the commercialization of the gram and the predictions/thoughts for the new year.
