I was able to acquire 3 notes for my position/denomination set and about 250 notes for my master position set. I was looking at as much MPC as I had ever seen at one time. Aside from that, I'd like to tell the story of the 691 first printing set give-away. With assistance from Fred I was able to access the MPCfest money. I talked with Fred on numbering the shirts with UV ink but this didn't work out, so we came up with putting the SN # of the 691 set on 4 Fest money one dollar bills. (each SN number off each note), so there would be just 1 match. Then I put miscellaneous numbers on the rest of the one-dollar notes and inserted them in the envelopes of the Fest money that were going to be distributed. I was about in the middle of the line to receive my Fest money. When I did have it in my possession, I did not want to draw attention to the numbers by looking at my numbers. I entered the meeting room and was shocked to notice that every one who had received their Fest money was already trading notes. I was horrified. I thought if they only knew what was going to happen. It was finally time for the drawing, and let me tell you, it was torture watching festers trading the Fest money since I knew what was in store. I got in front of the crowd and made the announcement of the give-away, that Elmer Smith would draw the winning note out of the sack, and the SN number on that note would be the winner of all the notes. I had to explain this several times probably because of the excitement. ( I didn't tell them the number was in UV ink and you have to have a UV light to see it.) A few people were shocked and excited to examine their notes; then I noticed the confused looks on their faces as the numbers on their notes did not match. Harold, was showing Fest money under UV light and noticed the extra number. Then everyone got excited again. It took about 3 minutes for a fester to find the winning number. Nick was the lucky man, and let me tell you, he was surprised. Congratulations again Nick. This was great to take part in such a Fest event like this--not just once, but twice, 2 years in a row. I thank Mr. 691 for the donation he made to the Fest, and I thank everyone who attended the Fest for making this a very memorable event for me. ==================================================== Editorial ---------------------------------------------------- I am not too motivated for this work this morning. As the glow of the Fest fades, the magnitude of the work on the desk, kitchen, dining room, and coffee tables as well as in my car, brief case(s), email boxes and other places looms heavily. =================================================== Mail Call --------------------------------------------------- Dear Gram, I find it difficult to believe that Gary would use the worn out term "script," or was it entered there to see if I was still reading the Grams. SCRIPNOT Dear Not, Ouch, we must share the blame with Gary for not "fixing" it before publication, but this is a good opportunity to repeat the point. Script is something that actors read, scrip is a money substitute. The larger point is that terminology is important in our hobby as in all areas of life. As we try to recruit new participants, it is much better to teach them the correct terminology. For many years many of us fought hard to eliminate obverse and reverse in favor of face and back to describe the sides of a note. This battle has mostly been won, but there are still some exceptions and we must be vigilant. Our favorite error these days is using the word "currency" to mean paper money. The essential point is that currency includes paper money AND coins in circulation. Therefore Joe's Coins and Currency is something of a nonsensical store name. This particular terminology issue is rather complex. That is probably one reason that I like it! Unfortunately, it will also be a difficult one to win.
