Ohio into First Place (Tie) for Fest
David Seelye has recruited the 31 Fester, Ed Frey of Glenmont, Ohio. Frey is an important recruit because he moves Ohio into a first place tie with Indiana and Oklahoma for the most Festers! Of course as the host state for the Fest, it is appropriate that Ohio should be a leader in attendance if for no other reason than its citizens have the shortest distance to travel. For that reason, Ohio is in third place because of the distance tiebreaker. However, Fest organizer Fred Schwan reports that he has several Ohio candidates who might attend the Fest so fair warning to Indiana, Oklahoma, and any other state with thoughts of coming to the lead from back in the back.
Welcome Ed Frey, and thank you David Seelye!
Welcome to the World
by Mark Watson, newbie world guy
"Wow, U.S. money in color" – my first impression when I set my eyes on a MPC note. The only color I ever saw occurred on the various U.S. Treasury seals. So MPC came as a nice surprise, and I started collecting it.
Of course I knew world paper money had color but I was a U.S.-only collector. To me, I didn’t have any reason to collect anything other than U.S. Sure, I had a couple of odd coins and notes from foreign countries, I mean, who doesn't. But I definitely didn't collect them. Really, what's the point of collecting someone else's money? That's what I believed ten years ago when I started collecting MPC.
I kept most of that belief up to this summer when Joe Boling and Fred Schwan introduced me to the world. Even though I had looked through that big black book of theirs, I never really saw what I was missing. Then, at the Summer Seminar, they and the rest of the class showed me.
In addition to seeing the other types of money used during the war like AMC, I thoroughly enjoyed the various designs used on war bonds, or fixed income securities if you want to sound impressive. I even started my war bond collection that week by buying two Japanese bonds at the Young Numismatist (YN or Hawaiian for Sam Feeback) Auction. The next day in class I added a third to my collection from Joe's stock, and continue to buy others.
Now that I’d started looking at the world, I realized I sorely lacked education in the various areas. Being a member of the ANA and SPMC helped in my U.S. endeavors, but didn't give me the breadth to help me in my world collecting. So, I joined the International Bank Note Society. I’ve already gotten my first journal, and the amount of world information contained in that one volume was amazing, at least for me.
I've also started upgrading my library collection. First, I bought Volume 2 and 3 of the Standard Catalog of Paper Money. I've also recently bought a copy of Money and Conquest off of ebay. Now I’m looking for T.F.A. van Elmpt’s BAFSV book, Ting's book on Chinese military notes and bonds, and Rutlader’s AMC book. These along with books I can borrow from the ANA / IBNS library will help in the transition. Additionally, I now check the international show listings, something I’d never considered before.
Budgetary reasons (still haven’t won the lottery) prevent me from going to one for the next couple of years (I mean, hey, I still have to pay for the Fest), but at least I can start planning for one in the future. Most likely I'll try to attend one tied in with an IBNS meeting. I've also started collecting names of dealers who specialize in the field. For now, I’m trying to learn as much as I can, and continue checking at shows for war bonds. I’ve also put together my want list of AMC issues, a natural progression to my existing MPC collection. I’m going to try to keep it contained to those areas (that budget thing again), but I’m sure at some point that big black book will consume me, and I’ll start buying everything. Until next month.

Editorial
----------------------------------------------
We are very pleased to welcome Mark Watson as a monthly columnist! The plan is that Mark will write one Sunday per month. We very much would like to find three or four additional, courageous souls to share the Sunday slot. This would give the gram much greater breadth and also reduce the strain on the editorial headquarters.
We did not get to the comments on the sales of the new MPC book nor on MPC Fest. We worked on both of those projects today and will share some of the info tomorrow. Sorry about the extra delay.

Mail Call
----------------------------------------------
Dear Editor,
Last night California had the BIGGEST state Lottery jackpot ever for a state lottery! 193 MILLION dollars!!!! However I am more concerned as to what number set of the new MPC books I am allowed to purchase than checking to see if I won any loot!Oh great and mighty editor can you please tell us where the numbers have fallen upon our designated Saturday morning Email requests.
Thank You!
MPC-WEST!
Dear Ed,
It is obvious that you have an albino 0, thus showing the figure 100 instead of 1000. I congratulate you on publishing the book and any errors should be seen as an opportunity for the collector to update their book immediately with any new material seen/omissions/prefixes/prices. We are publishing English Paper Money by Duggleby this year and I too, dread the inevitable error. But, then we are human and to err is human. See you in Chicago/Memphis?
Regards,
Pam
Hello Pam,
Thank you for your good wishes and good luck with Duggleby. There is not such thing as an easy book project!
Yes, of course I will be in Chicago and Memphis. I look forward to seeing you there.
Ed

Hot Contact List
Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.
Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.
We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
