CPMX in the Books
The 2002 Chicago Paper Money Exposition was a roaring success! Joe Boling is preparing a report to appear on Tuesday and other reports are expected. Stay tuned.
Out of the Trash…
By Marcus Turner
Once again Mr. 691 really got me good. I received a message from him today asking if I had received the "other" donation that he had sent to benefit the scholarship. Naturally I started to panic since I had only received and passed onto Larry one item.
At that point I began to dig through the trash in my office. Thank goodness that I did not empty my trash out of my office last night like I was supposed to. I found the envelope he had sent to me but it only contained a piece of cardboard. Upon closer inspection the cardboard had handwriting on it! I hope to have a scan up for all to see soon but for now it reads "$1.00 MPC 2-5-69 2-20-69." It appears as though some of the writing was cut off at some point. These dividers were used for the first printing, three per carton: One at the bottom of the carton, one between the layers of notes, and on at the top. This is not one of the dividers that was utilized for the second printings of 691 and 701 as dividers to group 100 notes (an alternative to bands).
Although this may be a wild assumption on my part, I am guessing that the handwriting would have been made by someone at the BEP rather than Army Finance given the two dates that appear on the cardboard. The end label of 691 $1 carton that I own was "Cartoned by JP on 2-28-1969", only 8 days after the 2-20-69 date written on the divider. Once again, this is a wild, hair brained theory on my part.
I am happy to report that the divider has been salvaged out of my trash can, free of any damage, and will be auctioned at FEST III to the benefit of the Scholarship. Last year there much excitement over the sliver of wood that broke off of my 691 wooden crate. I believe that Fred paid some $30 for that glorified splinter. I cannot wait to see what kind of excitement this 8 ¾ " X 5 ½ " piece of cardboard can generate.
Thank you again Mr. 691!

Editorial
----------------------------------------------
Gram withdrawal can be a serious condition. There is only one known cure. Unfortunately, that cure relies upon the efforts of an editor of known unreliability! Ok, we are sorry about the dearth of Grams. The techonological problems continue to plague us. This was exacerbated by the driving and other details in preparation for CPMX. Then of course there was the hard work at the event. All those hours of looking at MPC. Studying replacements, talking about finds, and making discoveries take a lot out of a guy!
As stated above, CPMX was a great success. How could it have been otherwise, but we feel somewhat sorry for our friends at Krause Publications who could not come up with an original name for their event. They had to transform the name of our favorite collectible to create a name for the show!

Mail Call

Dear Editor, publisher, distributor, Fred
No GRAMS for two or three days. Desert islands are better. HEP!! (That's Texas for, HELP!!
Bill Murray
Dear Gram,
Was there a Gram 563 and 564?? Was there any after 565 or will that occur after the Fest III ??
Bill
Dear Gram,
In reference to Bill getting the "new" jet and "will attend Fest IV"........to heck with him driving it to the next FEST......I think he should pick up EACH attending Fester and fly them to FEST IV !!!!!! Lets be fair about this decision! Let all the Festers vote on it!!!!
Good luck Bill~!!
PK6
Dear PK,
Now THAT is a good idea. Why didn’t I think of that? Better yet, why didn’t Bill think of it!?

Hot Contact List
Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.
Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.
We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
