Fest After Action Report

By Warner Talso

What did I like most about the FEST?

I ask myself "what is the single most important reason for going to the FEST?" The answer is - to learn. Thus, what I liked most were all the events, interchanges, and conversations that gave me an opportunity to learn. Particularly satisfying was meeting the people who, previously, I had only heard about or corresponded with. The auction was noteworthy. A great deal of effort went into it.

What did I like least about the FEST?

Keeping mind that it was a great success, I wish the training schedule had come out earlier. I understand the conflicts, but this proves the value of getting the schedule out early. It should be early enough so that Gramsters can provide input and FESTers can make travel arrangements around it.

Comments and Suggestions. 1. The quiz game was great. I think it would be even better if everyone was involved. Why not have brackets, a la the NCAA tournament. Have a random drawing for positions. Have 5 questions per "match". Winners move up. Questions get harder. Have a "trophy" for the winner. 2. The show and tell events were very interesting and I suggest could be expanded. Maybe a little more formality. Advertising in the training schedule. There is an amazing amount of interesting and fascinating people, history and knowledge there. Take advantage. 3. It seems like most people left about noon on Sunday. Is this acceptable? One way to minimize that is to have desirable events later in the day. 4. I thought my visit to Camp Perry was most interesting. Apparently most of the others did not think so. Too bad. Do you plan to attend FEST IV? Yes, the good Lord willing and the creeks don't rise. Thanks, Fred, for all your Herculean efforts, hard work, and enthusiasm. Also, thanks to Phil and Larry for putting the auction together. Also, Harold, for being the "finisher" - seeing that things came to closure.

Editorial

----------------------------------------------

Wow, in Gram 569 I was excited and explained how we had solved the mailing problems at Yahoo. It required breaking the Gram list into lists of no more than 40 names. That was a pain to do and was going to be a continuous pain to use, but it looked workable and I was ready to get the Gram back on schedule.

Well, within a few hours of solving that problem, Yahoo introduced another enhancement. Yahoo now allows no more than 100 emails to be sent in an hour! That is completely unworkable.

That put us back to the drawing board. All along we have wanted papermoneyworld to be the home of MPCGam. It was fitting and appropriate, but another circle of technical problems kept that from happening. However, with the Yahoo problems, Doug "Wiz" Bell (namesake of the Bell charts) went to work and seems to have fixed the problems at pmw. This Gram is being sent via this new system.

Sure there will be problems, and please tell us of any that you see, but our testing looks good. I am sorry to spend so much editorial space on technical problems, but it has been necessary. Hopefully, we can get back to true numismatics and a regular Gram schedule immediately!

Thanks for your patience and other virtues that you have demonstrated during this difficult time.

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
