"Altered Peace dollar must have story to tell", by Russell Rulau

Reviewed by Howard A. Daniel III

The February 12 issue of Numismatic News has an article by Russ about a 1925-dated Peace dollar that was etched by a Sgt Charley Root, who is guessed to have been a U.S. Marine in the Pacific during WWII. The bottom of the reverse has his name and rank and the top has "Oahu Okinawa Ellice/Ulithi Gilberts/Carolines/Entiwetok." Russ is looking for the man and checked the Social Security Death Index and found three Charles Roots. The first man was from Michigan and died on Mercer Island, Washington in 1997. The second man was also from Michigan (Genesee) and was apparently born and died there in 2001. The third man was born in Oregon and died in Douglas, Washington in 1993. If any of you know of these three men or other men with that name, please contact Russ at Krause Publications, 700 East State Street, Iola, WI 54990. One of the really new pieces of information I learned from his article was about the Social Security Death Index. I wonder if it would also be useful for those of us who own "Short Snorters" to use that index to look up the names on them.

Editorial

----------------------------------------------

The above review by Howard and the basic article by Russ Rulau bring up the point of engraved coins from WWII. Very little has been written about these items. They are correctly classified as love tokens, but this hardly seems fitting for these particular engraved coins.

I bought a few of these at the FUN convention from Linda Amey who is a specialist in love tokens. We certainly welcome submissions on this topic.

Mail Call

----------------------------------------------

Dear Gram,

I was hoping to see an auction catalog for the Fest in advance, but no luck this year. I know it would be more fun to be @ the Fest in person, but most of my traveling has been local. Such is the life of a Gramster......Looking forward to enjoying your new book.

Bob D.

Dear Bob,

We tried to get the auction list out to everyone, but I guess the computer gods were against us. Perhaps it will make you feel worse that some Gramsters did receive the catalog. I cannot determine who did and who didn't. It was just bad luck. We will certainly try harder for next year. However, we still hold out hope that you will be there (here).

We look forward to any comments you might have about the book.

Fred

Dear Gram,

Sparky sure did a great job with his after action report. He saved your administrative bacon at the Fest too! I expect that you will need him to do it again next year!

MPC Kid

Dear Gram,

I would like to reprint Warner Talso's after action report and the comments from Gary Hicks and others in my recruiting efforts for Fest IV.

David Seelye

Dear David,

You have the permission of the Gram and unless the others speak up, (silence is consent) feel free to use their comments to. We must aim at no fewer than 50 festers for 03.

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!

Very interesting replacement. Series 692 $10 (!!), serial number E00032007 pos 5. This SN demonstrates the system very well. Four positions completed = 32,000 notes. This then is from sheet number 7. Note is overall very fine, but looks extremely fine from the face. The centerfold that is strong on the back is not even noticable on the face. Two staple holes that saved the note from destruction 30 years ago at left. Yours for $3300, terms possible. Confirm at fred@papermoneyworld.net.
