Research Avenues

By Howard Daniel

I learned from MPCGram Number 563 that The Delegator assigned Warner Talso the task of researching the legal and organizational history of MPC. During December, I visited the Army War College (AWC) and talked to the librarian about donations to them, a document they have requested from me about setting up the IDHS in Viet Nam for the J2, and references in their library/files. They need some donations for anyone willing to send things to them, but the to-be-established National Museum of the U.S. Army (NMUSA) will also need them. The librarian scolded me about the IDHS document I promised to write many years ago, so I had to promise her I would get on it, especially after she took me to one of the classified rooms in the basement and showed me drawers of reports I created during the war. It was really eerie to see those enemy ground order of battle and other reports! Then she took me to the large reference room and introduced me to the man who just took over the area of finance, banking, economics for them. He went to his computer and easily retrieved many documents that have "Finance Corps" and/or "MPC" in them. I emailed a list to someone named Schwan (maybe he is The Delegator?) to start requesting them through me, but it turns out that he is too busy with something called the MPCGram and a project called MPCFest. So I think this gentleman, Warner, would be a great person for me to be in contact with to start requesting documents out of the AWC. As I receive them, I will have them copied, return the originals to the AWC, and send the copies to Warner for research and further distribution to this Schwan fellow and others interested in them. Does that sound good to you Mr. Talso? If so, please contact me at Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com and we can get started. If not, is there anyone else out there willing to go through the AWC references and documents?

This gram should have been sent trough papermoneyworld here from Gram HQ. The past few Grams sent via pmw, were retransmitted by Doug Bell. If all goes well, we will really be on the road to Gram recovery. You can use the reply function to send mail to MPCGram at pmw. For the time being we will maintain the MPCGram addresses at papermoneyworld and Yahoo, but hope to discontinue the Yahoo version soon.

Dear Editor,

That was a very interesting article on the silver dollar. I have several JIM notes with names on them that I've been trying to find a way to track down. I haven't been successful using the records center in St.Louis, evidently they're swamped with all sorts of requests. How do I get into these social security death records? I also have several Australian Florins that have been engraved (Love token style) and a Philippine peso with the name etc. of a light colonel on it. Any information/direction you can give me will be much appreciated and results shared with the group!

Thanks, Jack Glass

Dear Editor,

I just saw a British Armed Forces Special vouchers, 4th series. One had the K/1 but the other had K/2. Both were the 1 pound notes. Is the K/2 more value?

George Fitzgerald

Dear Esteemed Editor,

The sad fact that comes with growing older is that older people you know are passing on ahead of you. One person I know and supported with intelligence reports was LTG Vernon A. Walters, U.S. Army Retired. General Walters died February 10 near his home in West Palm Beach, Florida. He was drafted into the Army in 1941. He was shortly a 2LT and served in North Africa and Europe during WWII. He was an aide to GEN Mark Clark after WWII, transferred to GEN George Marshall's personal staff, then worked in the White House for Presidents Truman and Eisenhower. Some of his early work was in classified and diplomatic missions worldwide, and he was used more and more in that area during his working life. One of his missions was in Viet Nam during our war there where I was tasked to support his research into several areas. He was a deputy director of the CIA during the Nixon Administration, and later worked for President Reagan on many, many senisitive tasks worldwide, to include a couple of ambassadorships. GEN Walters wrote "The Mighty and the Meek" and "Silent Missions". During some heavy duty work, he always used a lot of humor to keep the troops going and he got to know everyone around him in more detail than anyone I have ever met. These two books will show you how much he also knew about the high-powered people around him. I know some of you are asking yourselves why I am writing about an Army general who has recently passed on. He was not only a good man everyone should know about, but I believe many of the post-WWII military financial instruments our military and allies used overseas were created because of his advice and work to our government.

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!

Very interesting replacement. Series 692 $10 (!!), serial number E00032007 pos 5. This SN demonstrates the system very well. Four positions completed = 32,000 notes. This then is from sheet number 7. Note is overall very fine, but looks extremely fine from the face. The centerfold that is strong on the back is not even noticable on the face. Two staple holes that saved the note from destruction 30 years ago at left. Yours for $3300, terms possible. Confirm at fred@papermoneyworld.net.
