CPMX Report
by Joe Boling
Rather than continue the thread started several weeks
ago dealing with personal recollections of monetary
matters from my youth, I will say a few words about
the Chicago Paper Money Expo.
There was definitely an MPC buzz about the show,
what with the simultaneous release of Fred's 4th
edition and the Leo May collection in the auction. The
MPC and foreign lots went off in the first auction
session, Thursday night. I had planned to arrive that
evening, before I knew that the sale was going to
start that night or that I would be interested in
looking at the lots and bidding. I changed my flight
so that I could get in about noon.
I went straight to the lot viewing and spent a couple
hours there looking at the few lots of interest, plus
all the MPC (to see what position 8 notes were there
hat had not been illustrated in the catalog). It
turned out there were four 8s, two of which I did not
need and two of which were replacements, and way too
dear for me to be interested in (the 481 $10, for
example, which sold for $4900+15%). I want to get one
replacement from position 8 to represent that aspect
of the series, but of these two, one is rarer than
normal and the other is a high grade. A suitably doggy
example will appear eventually.
I bid on three lots and bought two of them, the
new French AMC leaflet (apparently not new to
everyone, but new to me and Fred), and a dual lot of
counterfeit and genuine notes from Yugoslavia.
I spent hours every day on the bourse floor (did
not eat each day until the auction spread was
available), and I still barely managed to see every
dealer by the close of the day Saturday (I flew out
early Sunday). The show was deceptively large--there
were a lot of dealers. I spent an hour in the IBNS
board meeting Friday, but spaced on the general
membership meeting Saturday and missed it (not to
worry--the speaker was only that chubby target from
Port Clinton). I did manage to get to the Chicago Coin
Club meeting for the last five minutes of the same
speaker's pitch to sell books.
I added two position 8 notes to my collection; a
641 50c and a 692 $5. The latter was almost the last
thing I did Saturday, at the second to last table I
visited. It is one of the pieces with the EVIDENCE
rubber stamp, apparently applied by someone who had
seized it during a criminal case.
It is annotated 1800 27-7-72 on the back. Esteemed
editor says he almost approves of my spending a bit
more than normal for it (more than an unstamped note
would cost) so that I can add yet another twist to my
fun collection of MPC.
I went to the auction Saturday night as well, and
bought a note for my biographical collection--a
beautiful second charter date back $5 on El Paso,
Texas, my father's birth burg. After the auction,
Larry Smulczenski and I studied a new group of Chinese
thrift and reconstruction savings system bonds that he
has acquired on eBay, finding even more anomalies in
the series than we already knew existed. I don't know
how we are going to treat those in the next WWII
Remembered. It may be reduced to simply listing all
that have been observed and not trying to make a
coherent series of them. It's obvious that the Chinese
were issuing earlier pieces for years after new
designs and types were available, and in this lot is a
locally-printed piece from Chekiang province (not
identified as such except in the imprint, but of a new
design).
One of the highlights of the show was the
appearance of a spectacular 471 $10 counterfeit. The
person who owned it did not realize it was bad until
he offered to sell it to a particularly observant
collector. The note itself has superior presswork and
plates, but the paper is without planchettes (they are
printed on the paper), and the serial numbers are
slightly ragged and with numerals that are not
accurate copies of the originals (specifically the 3
and 6; other numerals are very good copies).
I photographed it so that I can check my fake at
home to see if it is from the same production. There
were several people willing to buy it, and Marvin
Mericle carried it around the floor soliciting bids
for the hapless owner. The offered price rose to
astronomical heights (nearing four figures), and the
note now resides in the stock of David Seelye (who
also spent a mountain of money in the auction).
Speaking of the auction again, it appeared to us
on the floor Thursday night that many lots were being
bought back in at the reserves (announced as 60% of
low estimate). However, upon analyzing the data that
had been printed off of the Lyn Knight web site the
day before the sale, it appears that someone went
through making saving bids in most lots, so that the
sales at the reserve were actual sales, not passed
lots. That means that the estimates were placed too
high, but it also means that there is enough market
for one or more buyers to be confident in buying a lot
of expensive MPC (especially replacements). Overall,
the auctioneers expressed satisfaction with the result
of their first-ever venture into auctioning non-US
notes.
Yours truly had one note consigned, a US Navy club
chit from Vladivostok during the Japanese- American
intervention in Siberia in the 1920s. The chit is
denominated 20 sen (which is why I, as a Japan
collector, had acquired it years ago). It went to
$700, much better than I expected. I have consigned 49
pieces to the Memphis sale, many of which are listed
in SB. If you are a collector of those notes, watch
for that sale (it's just around the corner).

Editorial

As Joe indicated above, this column was submitted
shortly after CPMX, but not published until now
because of the many and varied problems that we have
had with the Gram. This should mark the return to
regularity for the Gram especially with respect to our
columnists. We (all Gramsters) owe a big debt to the
columnists who contribute a great deal to keeping the
Gram going.

Mail Call
----------------------------------------------
Dear Gram,
Welcome back.....568/8 is the first Gram I have
received since 562/2.
Let me know when I can obtain the missing ones.
Thanks,
Barnacle Bill
Thanks Bill,
The "missing back issues" will be posted at
papermoneyworld soon. We will announce it in the Gram.
Editor
Dear Steamless Editor:
For reference purposes, my last Gram prior to this
one was number 563.
Had a great time at FEST III. Biggest rush was
meeting the faces to go with the names I have seen in
the Gram, in books, and talked to on the phone.
Warner
Dear Warner,
I hope that one of these days you will share with the
group what you told me at the Fest about your
expectations of the seminar and Fest and how the
events compared to the expectations. Please, do not be
shy (not that many have accused you of that!).
Editor
Dear Editor,
The address that Howard listed in the Gram for the
Cold War Certificate is incorrect. For those
interested, search on "Cold War Recognition" in Yahoo
and you will get the site with an application and
instructions. Hope this helps.
Ron Waddell
Dear Ron,
We followed your advice and found the link below. We
considered running the entire DOD article, but decided
that there was just not enough numismatic connection.
Also, Bill McNease reported completing the process and
being pleased with the certificate. We seem to have
lost his mail saying so, but at least we are
acknowledging it!

Hot Contact List
-------------------------------------------------------------
Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list
serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach
by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them
buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish
periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive
Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their
advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.
Secondly, this is a draft from the book that
participating dealers should check for correctness.
Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can
still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond
to this email or call (419) 732-6683.
We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here
in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!

Very interesting replacement. Series 692 $10 (!!),
serial number E00032007 pos 5. This SN demonstrates
the system very well. Four positions completed =
32,000 notes. This then is from sheet number 7. Note
is overall very fine, but looks extremely fine from
the face. The centerfold that is strong on the back is
not even noticable on the face. Two staple holes that
saved the note from destruction 30 years ago at left.
Yours for $3300, terms possible. Confirm at
fred@papermoneyworld.net.
