Replacements--give me a break

by Doug Bell

Dealers are now replacement wise and are pointing out
when they have a replacement available. Sleepers do
crop up from time to time. But what is New to these
Dealers are the data listed in the new Comprehensive
Catalog of Military Payment Certificates. MPC is
unique in that there are many aspects that are just
now coming out about MPC due to the research done by
Fred Schwan and Larry Smulczenski.
Time and time again I see items listed on EBay and
other auctions where there is given NO respect as to
the Sn number. This relatively new way of searching
for notes of great rarity seems to be greatly ignored.
Although many of the truly great and dedicated MPC
collectors know about THE NUMBERS, there are many
dealers and collectors that seem to ignore the
potential for displaying or listing THE NUMBERS, aside
from the few that collect position numbers.
This aspect of MPC is still a gold mine for the right
note. So the dealers / collectors who don't provide
THE NUMBERS are hurting themselves when selling MPC.
Discoveries are sill being made. With the MPC
database on line now it's just a matter of time until
two or more SN numbers that match are located,
although this has been done already with out the
database. The database is programmed so that when an
Sn# is input, it searches numbers for a match
excluding the prefix and suffix. With the inclusion of
the database on the web, I have found an anomaly in
the 541 25 cent notes. It has been known for a while
about the inconsistency of 541 notes especially
replacement numbers and position numbers that don't
follow the math formula for the Sn number. Now there
is a new anomaly: The 541 25-cent notes. I have been
recording the Sn# of unit #17 and have found that all
Sn# in this unit do not mathematically calculate out
right to match the position numbers. The numbers fall
between 10752001 and 11424000. More data is needed
to solve the puzzle as to how the numbering scheme was
laid out. So I am asking all numbers for these notes
that fall into the listed SN# range please be reported
to me for recording. Send them to
doug@papermoneyworld.net The list of notes already
located can be seen at
www.papermoneyworld.net/doug/54125CENT.htm
Thank to all for a great time at the fest, see you
next year

READ the Book First, Show Report by Mike Cummings

by Mike Cummings

Set up at the Collectorama in Lakeland yesterday at
3PM. (BTW, much warmer than at the fest a couple
weekends ago!!!) Dealer setup was yesterday, Thursday
from 3 to 8 PM. Another great MPC dealer (not that I
am) is setup there, none other than Leo May. I was
pleased to see him and did not know he makes the show
but he informed he that once and awhile he does.
Anyway, was on the bourse floor this morning bright
and early. Have the MPC Collectoin (the famous
Cambliss reprints) displayed behind our table which
looks great. Last night sold Leo May a couple notes
(AMC) for $450.00 so am ready for business this
morning. ALSO BOWS is here who wrote a 1200 page book
on Vietnam.
I decided the first order of business today was to
push the new 4th edition. Especially since I have the
back cover. I have already ripped all the competitors
ads out of our copies! Especially Ian Marshall's and
David Seeyles! So don't mind pushing them.
Anyway, while making my way around the bourse this
morning I stopped at a gentleman's table and began to
tell him that I was an MPC dealer and also a
distributor for a great new book, the 4th Edition MPC
Catalog and was offering dealers a great 40%
discount!!!! Even for one copy!!
I had stopped because he had a stack of MPC in
holders wrapped in a rubber band, perhaps 20-25 notes
in his showcase. His immediate comment to me was,
"Well, I don't really do all that much in MPC."
Feeling rejected and sensing I had already lost a sale
I just said, well OK, let me look at your MPC notes
there.
He opened the case and handed me the
stack...........ALL small cent notes, no $5 or $10's,
and a single $1.00 note and the rest all cent notes.
BAAM!
the second note I spotted was a very very nice XF/AU
Series 461 25-Cents note, with NO "A" suffix letter.
Wellllll, after reading Schwan's MPC catalog (Hey Ian
I might not read it through and through but I do read
the IMPORTANT STUFF) I knew this was a REPLACEMENT
NOTE!!!!!
I could NOT believe my eyes, especially after then
and only then,
looking at his price........$40.00. I just said OK,
what kind of deal could I get on the entire lot since
I was really an MPC enthusiast and wanted to buy
them all. The grand total for all the notes came to
$216.75 and he said he guessed he could do the deal at
$175.00.
After much much careful thought I said OK, I'll buy
this deal.
Talking about the old saying, "BUY THE BOOK BEFORE THE
COIN"!!!!!! WOW! Are dealers really this dumb. I spend
a lot of money on books all the time, ONLY if I am
even mildy interested.
Thought I'd share this and thought it was very
fitting for people who don't buy books. Also to give
hope to collectors out there that they CAN find
bargains. I have found replacements before but figured
most dealers knew too..........

Editorial
----------------------------------------------
I was (am) a little embarrassed that on Phil's very
first column yesterday, I failed to include his
byline! I think that it was clear enough that it was
his article, but nonetheless, he deserved to have a
real byline. Sorry Phil, and anyone else for whom my
omission may have caused confusion.

Mail Call
----------------------------------------------
Dear Editor,
I've E mailed the gram several times recently and
they apparently went to never, never land. Just got a
copy of the new book. Thanks for the listing as a
resource. Hope the replacement info was helpful.
Sounds like I had Harold very frustrated regarding my
481 4th printing $1. How many are now known? Wish you
had tried to establish a value.  Have a listing for
the wanted column.
Wanted: any note from series 641 with a serial number
of J02283151J or J22831510J. Please contact Larry
Gibbs @ oth@prairieweb.com
Great work on the new book. May finally get to meet
you in the Springs in July, Missed you last year. (The
serial number above was my USMC serial number when I
was in Nam with the !st MAW in 67/68. They switched to
social security numbers just before I was discharged
in Mid 68.

Take care. Larry Gibbs

Hot Contact List
-------------------------------------------------------------
Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list
serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach
by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them
buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish
periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive
Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their
advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that
participating dealers should check for correctness.
Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can
still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond
to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here
in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
