============================================== MPC Gram ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics ---------------------------------------------- Series 003-Number 580, Sunday, March 31, 2002 Looking Around The IBNS 2002 by Tony Whitehead The IBNS was busy as usual this year. Serious bank note collectors descending on London and of course the AGM's of the Postal Order and Cheque Societies. Although this year I did not find any postal orders to shout about the day was very enjoyable and my find is illustrated below: (World War I Saving Schemes Scrip Voucher is illustrated with John Bradley signature as on bank notes) By the Spring of 1915 it was found that the war was costing the country 1m pounds a day and saving was encouraged. The Post Office helped to raise money by issuing War Stock or Bonds to the value of 5 pounds at 4 1/2% in December 1915. To help purchase the War Stock or Bonds, Scrip Vouchers were issued from June 1915 in 5 Shillings, 10 Shillings and 1 Pound denominations. The last month of issue was November 1915, then Scrip Vouchers to the value of 5 pounds were to be presented at a Money Order Office between the 1st and 15 December 1915. The five shilling Scrip Voucher I was lucky enough to find was a last day of issue (30th November 1915). You are all possibly wondering why this voucher should be of interest to this Society. The paper used to print these 5 Shilling, 10 Shilling and 1 Pound Scrip Vouchers was in fact Postal Order paper!(The above was in Vol 17, Part 1, Number 63, January 2002 issue of Postal Order News, which is the Journal of The Postal Order Society. To contact the author and/or to obtain information about the society, write to him (he is the Chairman) at 41 Rainsbrook Drive, Monkspath, Solihull, West Midlands B90 4TG. He also has World War II and other U.S. and world military financial and postal items in his collection. The above was submitted by Howard A. Daniel III, who is also a member of the society.) ============================================== Editorial ---------------------------------------------------- I did not think that I would ever see the day. This is my last Gram. Yes, tomorrow our assistant editor, Phil "IWANTMYMPC" Goldstein will take the reins of the Gram. Perhaps last Gram is a little melodramatic. I expect to be back in the saddle in about a week, but Phil will be in charge so to speak while I am out of town. Once before we tried this arrangement, but I was not very easy to let go and Phil was a little timid (believe it or not) in pushing me aside so it did not work real well. I may or may not submit any trip reports while away, but I doubt if I will miss any opportunities to read my daily Gram. Indeed, I look forward to what surprises will come my way. Well, I think that I look forward to the surprises. Phil has said that he want to "fix" some things. Hm, wonder what that means. As always, the Gram depends on YOU for good material every day. Send your letters, articles, questions, comments, and even complaints (yes, this will be a great week for complaints) to us. Continue to use the MPCGam@yahooo.com address. ============================================= Mail Call ---------------------------------------------- Dear Editor, Rec'd the 4th edition in the mail (actually yesterday, but found it in the door this morning!) I regret I don't have time to do a complete read of it as I'm preparing to leave on our annual family vacation tomorrow morning (Florida!) But, a quick glance gives me the strong impression that it is head and shoulders above the third edition. I will do a complete cover-to-cover read of this edition (as I did with the 3rd) after I come back on April 7. But, it is safe to say that MPC4 tells you everything you ever wanted to know about MPC, whether or not you were afraid to ask! I'll confirm that when I get back! I regret I missed MPC Fest III due to work commitments (and, of course, I was unaware of Fests I and II: heck, I was probably unaware of MPC!) But, I will definitely make plans for MPC Fest IV. And, I may e-mail you asking for a visit this summer, as we have friends in Marblehead that we usually visit every year. I may bring my MPC3 for autograph as well. Or, I may just give it to a co-worker that I've almost converted. I gave him a 472 Series $1 note (fine condition) that I replaced with a better one and watched his eyes light up! No wonder we love this hobby so much! Thanks again, Rick Hello Rick, Thanks for the nice comments, but there are a few things that I do not understand. You let your livelihood interfere with the Fest? Please do not let that happen again (actually, I think that will take care of itself after you attend Fest IV). Then, you are going to leave your MPC book behind when you go on vacation. There is something wrong here. What could be better than lying on the beach with your MPC book? Editor Dear Editor It is really a bad situation when bidding on items and after the bidding process is over, you find out that the postage and handling is over 50% more that the item you just won. I don't understand why people continue to place item on auction and charge such an outrages price for postage and handling. I had one the other day that stated "We charge $1.00 for handling and the shipping cost" well come to find out what this meant was $1.00 is for handling and packaging only not for shipping. It was another 1$ for postage. I feel this is gouging and I refuse to take part in this. On the other hand if an item is of greater value I can understand wanting insurance, or charging extra for handling. Especially on an item that needs extra protection From the U.S. postal service. Which I think sets out to mangle any item it sees fit on consistent bases. Doug Dear Doug, Well, it sounds to me like the seller charged exactly what she/he said and $1 does not sound unreasonable for shaping juice. In concept however we agree with your point. Recently we were charged about $50 for shipping on lots that we picked up at the show!!!!!!! We are complaining about this and will let you know what happens. Editor Dear Editor, Next week, April 5, 6 and 7, 2002, I will be at the 41st Annual Warrensville Heights Coin Club Show. It will be held at Michaud's, 16808 Pearl Road, Strongsville, Ohio, near the intersection of I-71 and Route 82. I will be there 10-6pm on Friday and Saturday, and 10-2pm on Sunday. It is a great coin show. I will be there buying, selling, trading and appraising coins and collections. Please stop by and if you do not have one, I will give you one of my Chain Cent Tokens...Free Also with a purchase of $20 or more, I will give you my lucky "Indians in a Bottle", one of life's little mysteries. Big Jake will most likely make an appearance on Sunday only, as he is still recovering from his knee surgery. He is doing fine, and has gotten back most of his weight, to a slim 235 lbs. We hope to see you there. My best regards, COL Steve & Big Jake Dear Steve, Thanks for writing. This is indeed a good show. I had planned on attending, but now am planning on visiting the Chicago International Coin Fair. Possibly I can go to Strongsville on Sunday. In any event, these two shows make next weekend a good numismatic weekend.
