MPC BREAKTHROUGH ! ! !
By Russ Walsh
Doug Bell mentioned in a recent article (and at MPC Fest) that there was an
anomaly in the series 541 25-cent notes. This only effected notes with high
serial numbers (the last unit, 17). The position numbers of these notes do
not calculate out correctly using the formulas that work on other fractionals.
I, of course, saw this as a challenge, and set out to discover the cause of
this and find a formula that will work.
After days of long and tedious work at crunching the numbers, (OK, maybe only
a couple of hours) I hit upon a formula that both correctly identifies
the position numbers, and provides some possible reasons.
Unit 17 of this note seems to have been halved into 2 units (17 and 18),
each with only 4000 sheets instead of the normal 8000.
Six notes are in the MPC database that are affected by this:
Serial Numbers:
10887830 10894775 10895621 11225349 11339022 11342778
Position Numbers:
34 36 36 35 63 64
Calculated position Number:
17 18 18 60 74 74
Subtract 10752000 from serial # (84 notes/sheet * 8000 sheets * 16 units)
(This brings the serial # down to the first unit of 8000)
135830 142775 143621 473349 587022 590778
84 notes/sheet * 4000 sheets = 336000
If the serial number is above 336000, then this is the 18th unit, subtract
this number to bring it down to the first 4000 sheets.
137349 251022 254778
Divide the final number by the 4000 sheets, and round UP to the nearest
integer, this should match the actual position number.
33.9575 35.69375 35.90525 34.33725 62.7555 63.6945
34 36 36 35 63 64
The best way to calculate the position is to use the exact same formula
used for other fractionals, and change the 8000 to 4000, but ONLY for
notes with a serial # of 10752001 or higher.
It is possible that 4000 is not the exact number. For example, if the
unit was split 3395/4005, this formula will give the same results for
these specific serial numbers. Two serial numbers in sequence that
bridge position numbers would allow us to be sure of this number.
I can think of two reasons for breaking up the unit of 8000 sheets into
two 4000 sheet units.
1. They planned on only 4000 sheets worth of notes, but then later on
decided that more were needed.
2. The unit was split in two to run in parallel on two presses.
My choice would be #2. If two presses were utilized, the first 16 units
could be printed in parallel, then the last unit split to finish quickly.
One way to determine whether this might have occured is if two notes with
the same position number, but in different units, were compared to determine
if two different plates were used.

Phil: noted your comment on the wrappers! Your right, no wrappers for Series 691/701. But yellow for $1 works! I forgot that part of the story in the BNR! Bye! :)

Very interesting replacement. Series 692 $10 (!!), serial number E00032007 position 5. This SN demonstrates the system very well. Four positions completed = 32,000 notes. This then is from sheet number 7. Note is overall very fine, but looks extremely fine from the face. The centerfold that is strong on the back is not even noticeable on the face. Two staple holes that saved the note from destruction 30 years ago at left. Yours for $3300, terms possible. Confirm at: fredschwan@yahoo.com
Collector wants All USAFFE and AUSA Free Samar notes All 125th Infantry Regiment and Markings Guerrilla notes. I am also interested in any and all Guerilla Municipal issues.
