FEATURED ARTICLE
by
Philip M. Goldstein
Ever wonder how many radars were printed for a
particular series / denomination? I have... I'm sure you have as well. Fred was
kind enough to teach me the formula, so I'm going to share it here for everyone.
This also naturally applies to anything with Serial Numbers.
We will
choose a Series 641 .10 cent note to start with, for this discussion.
1)
Because I like it,
2) Because it was my first note,
3) Because there is
one reported,
4) Because I'm writing this feature!
There actually
two formulas to determine the amount of radars for a particular series and
denomination:
235
The Series 641 .10 cent has a recorded printing
total of 23,520,000 notes. If you divide the total production number
equally in half between the 4th and 5th digits: 2352 | 0000, you will
get the basis number to start with, 2352.
You then create a
mirror image of that number for the last four places of the serial number, which
in this case will be 2532, and then attach it to basis number above. This
will form the radar: 23522532. But wait! If you look at the total
production run, there weren't that many notes printed. It exceeds the production
run by 2,532 notes.
So, for this note, you have to subtract 1 from the
4th place digit of the serial number, which will then give you:
2351, and the mirror image will be 1532, forming 2351
| 1532. This number will work because there were 23520000
notes printed.
Therefore, the first four numbers is your
answer: 2,531. That is how many radars were printed for this series and
denomination.
So, in conclusion: since the last four digits of
the serial number are nothing more than a mirror image of the first four, as
long as you have had the first four printed, you will have a radar note for that
first four number, starting from:
0001 | 1000 right
on through:
2351 | 1531
This one is very simple. If the 4th place digit is
lower than the 5th place digit, as for the Series 521 .25 cent note which
had a total production run of 14448000. you only need to split the number
between the 4th and 5th digits, which will give you 1444
In conclusion, although there may have once
been 2,351 radars for the Series 641 .10 cent, or 1,444 for the 521 .25 cent
notes printed, the bottom line is how many survived from each and every series
and denomination. I do not hazard a guess, other than, I'm likely to conclude
that more survived from the series and denominations with high production runs,
as that would playing the favorite odds, and I'm sure even that would be
disputed.
EDITORIAL
As you will read below, Doug is soliciting votes
for the Fest 3 shirt... Although I am extremely partial to choice number 2
(gee...can you wonder why?) I would like to see a design submission
concerning Series 471. After all, this Fest's theme (and cake!) was the
Birthday of Series 471... I can't do it, I'm too busy caretaking the Gram.

CALL
All people interested in a MPC Fest shirt, are to vote on
the shirt by emailing me with there choice. I have only had 4 people respond
with interest in the shirt.
Only 1 can be chosen. For this to
work we need at least 20 people to want shirts, otherwise the cost
of production goes up.
Shirts designs can be seen at www.papermoneyworld.net/usmpc/shirt.htm
Please put shirt in subject line and mail your choice to: doug@papermoneyworld.net

Very interesting replacement. Series 692 $10 (!!), serial
number E00032007 pos 5. This SN demonstrates the system very well. Four
positions completed = 32,000 notes. This then is from sheet number 7. Note is
overall very fine, but looks extremely fine from the face. The centerfold that
is strong on the back is not even noticable on the face. Two staple holes that
saved the note from destruction 30 years ago at left. Yours for $3300, terms
possible. Confirm at: fredschwan@yahoo.com
