                                   FUN Show

by Howard A. Daniel III

I arrived at the FUN Show in Orlando on Friday morning and checked into the Quality Inn. There were so few people in the hotel, they allowed me in my room at 9AM instead of 3PM. A good start. I walked to the convention center and signed in, bought five raffle tickets, and placed my sticky badge on my shirt. Last year, my ANA Life Member badge was good enough, but this year I had to wear the sticky badge too. I wish they would honor the badge every year and not just once in awhile.

After I entered the bourse, I decided to start on the left side of the room. I ran into several U.S. dealers who I see at the Mid-Atantic shows, and one of them I had just seen in a Vienna, VA, coin store before driving south. My first purchase was a "Vietnam" club token for the Flamingo Club. It did not look like something from that era and I was proven right by one of the Gramsters. He said it was for a Navy club (Cunningham-IT80f) in Naples, Italy.

I was going to walk back to the dealer and get my money back, but someone said Guido Crapanzano likes anything from Italy, so I am going to send it to him. At Allen Berman's table, I found several Dutch East Indies duits and Thai 1/2 Att that were VERY well struck. Even if they do not upgrade my collection, they will be very good trading material! At Enterprise Coins table, I found several plantation tokens for the island of Borneo and one Thai funeral money piece made from a cardboard-like material, painted silver and stamped to look like a Chinese coin of old. The plantation tokens will likely upgrade my collection, and the funeral money appears to be different than I already own. Good stuff! Somewhere on the bourse I found a modern Japanese 10 Yen piece with a large "X" counterstamped on each side of the coin. This will end up in Joe Boling's hands. I have no idea what it was used for, but I like counterstamped, countermarked, chopmarked, overprinted and overstamped stuff! I also found a chopped Japanese 1 Yen piece with a number "5" on it, but it will not see Joe Boling's collection. I like pieces with numbers and letters mixed in with the chops. Narit (Rocky) had it at his Mikell International table. We also went out to dinner on Friday night at our favorite Chinese buffet restaurant (Wong's) on International Drive. It was my turn to buy and we had a great meal.

As I worked my way to the left side of the bourse I found a table with Fred sitting at it. What a sight to see the MPCGram editor in person! Only kidding. Larry was there too and many other Gramsters showed up over the next two days.

The surprise of the show for me and others was the appearance of Ray Bows. Yes, Ray Bows. He had disappeared from my view for many years. Ray and I go back about 25+ years, so it was good to see him back on a bourse. His catalog on the Vietnam War club tokens is one of THE references that made a difference to numismatists! I bought a bunch of club tokens for Thailand from him; a Cambodian coin, two Borneo plantation tokens, and French satirical coin that was produced when they were trying to conquer North Viet Nam in the 1880's.

A former Navy guy by the name of Marvin or Mericle, or both, bothered me a couple of times during the show, but he has a great wife who makes some great cookies, so I allowed him to hang around me for awhile. I hate to drop names of the rich and famous I met at this show, so I will stop with a Navy (ugh) guy. I hope to see you readers at the next FUN Show! Right?

Scholarship Fund Fattens

Keith and Sue Bauman have made a generous donation to the military money seminar scholarship fund. The Bauman’s are well known to MPC collectors. Keith is a collector and dealer who attends many paper money show. Sue is a paper money artist who has created several pieces based upon MPC. The most recognizable of these is the cover of the current MPC book!

Their donation is important to promoting the hobby. See information below about the scholarship fund.

We are making some progress in digging out from the mess that we created (with the help of the cyber demon). The Gram mail box is full of complaints but not too many articles or other useful editorial material so please do send in some good stuff. Now that we are back on line it will go fast!

Dear Editor,

I had a great FUN considering I was not even going to get a table until Herb pressed me to. Sold quite a bit MPC and bought lots of U.S. coins etc. Turned most right at the show. It was great to meet some people eye to eye that I had only met previously on the internet. I hope to be able to make it to the Fest.

Dear Ken,

Thank you for your comments. I am glad that you like the Gram enough to miss it. It sounds like you did not actually miss any Grams, but were just the innocent victim of our cyberspace problems.
