More FUN and an Important Deadline

By Larry "Ski" Smulczenski

Even though Gram Central is down, I thought I would jot down a few things while they were fresh in mind from the FUN show. As usual FUN was indeed fun. Not a great number of papermoney dealers there, but still enough to find a few nice little items to bring home for the collection. Saw many Gramsters there and want to thank them for coming up and introducing themselves. It's nice to know that these things are going out and our efforts are read and appreciated. Marv Mericle had his award winning MPC collection on exhibit at the show and it won a disappointing second place. Maybe we're prejudice, but it sure outshone the first place winner by stones throw. Some of those judges don't appreciate the finer things in life.

My major acquisition was a small size cardboard merchant chit from the Grand Pacific Hotel in Fiji. You will notice that the 3d value in World War II Remembered is listed with letters 3 and 5 mm tall. I've had the 3mm piece as well as the 1d and 6d pieces both with and without signatures on the back for many years, but had never seen the 5 mm tall 3d piece even though I had looked for it intensely. Well, it showed up in David Seelye stock at this show and I jumped on it. Of course, not 24 hours later, Fred Schwan came up with another one. So much for my diligent searching.

We were discussing World War II Remembered with a couple of potential purchasers when someone came up and said "That's a great book, I use it almost every day." Fred's ears perked up and he got a big grin on his face, until the gentleman said. "Yes, everytime my grandson comes over, he gets the book to sit on so he can easily reach the table. It works great." Fred, not to be out done answered with, "Then you should buy another copy as your sure to have more grandkids."

Fred, Harold and I had dinner with Ray Bows the author of Viet Nam, Military Lore 1959-1973, Another Way to Remember. What a super individual this gentleman is. We talked about Viet Nam, chits, tokens, etc the entire meal, went back to the hotel and talked till the wee hours of the morning and it seemed like only minutes had passed. Ray is a real interesting personality. His residence is a travel trailer that he uses to roam to the far corners of the United States. He visits Veteran Hospitals along the way, and talks with fellow vets, reliving experiences and gathering information for another book that he is putting together. The time that we spent with him was really the highlight of the show for the three of us.

But now, FUN is over and TriFESTa is almost upon us, less than seven weeks away. One of the enjoyable events of last years Fest was the auction we held. Some great items were auctioned off and then there were a couple of fun items that also brought nice bids and those proceeds went to the scholarship fund. I'm referring specifically to the wooden splinter from the MPC Packing Crate that was eventually won by our esteemed editor. When Neil Shafer was told the story about the splinter his natural retort was the question " Was he 'Crateful' that he won.?"

Anyway, Phil Goldstein and I spent a good part of one evening cataloging the auction lots. In doing so we missed some of the spontaneous activities and verbal exchanges that went on during that time. Therefore we're asking you to submit your lots to me prior to the Fest. That will give us a chance to catalog the items before we get to Port Clinton. To those that do so, we will waive the sellers 10% fee. It will also give us a chance to list them in the Gram so others that can not attend the Fest will have a chance to bid. If you don't want to mail me the lots, at least give me a list of what you plan to submit along with a scan, a description, a grade and a minimum bid. Then if there is some disagreement we can easily correct it at the Fest. My mailing address is Larry Smulczenski, Box 263, Shalimar, FL 32579 or email at skifla@prodigy.net. Let us hear from you.

MPC Book Nears Completion (really)

The long awaited fourth edition of the Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates is about to go to press. Yes, we know that you have heard it before, but this time we really, really, really mean it. In fact it is scheduled to go to the printer on Tuesday. (You can be sure that we will report on this important event when it takes place).

There are a few loose ends. If you have a AMC yen type A replacement (specimen or issued) that has not been reported, we would very much like to include the serial number data in the book. Through negligence, we did not include these data in past editions so we want to "catch up." Send your numbers now!

Dealers, if you have not reserved space for your advertising, we can still get it in if you make your reservation by Tuesday at 10am. We will then insert the actual ad when the galley proofs are checked so we will have some time to create the ad. The important thing is to get the reservation in. We will be in the office all day Monday and can take reservations by email too (this address will work). Remember, your advertisement gets your phone number on our Hot Contact List which appears EVERY month in the Bank Note Reporter and other places. Starting today or tomorrow (or at least soon), the HCL will appear in most issues of the Gram as well! Your advertisement is BNR Press products is an investment in the future! See more detailed information below.

Editorial

----------------------------------------------

While we were having all of the other problems, Yahoo changes some of its email system so going back there has created some new problems. Sure, most of it is just editor training, but he is notoriously hard headed AND hard to train so we will have to settle for these things for awhile. Most notably are the extra spaces that appear in the Gram. I cannot get rid of them! Drat.

Mail Call

----------------------------------------------

Dear Editor,

Hate to 'bitch' about a freebie, but I am now receiving the gram and it's spread over 9 or 10 widths of my monitor. I understand that this is controlled by the sender of the email. Could you have someone look into the problem and possibly correct it? I would appreciate it being on one screen width. It's so much easier to read it. Thanks in advance.

Donald T. 1SG, AUS (Retired)

Dear Top,

I will assign a squad of proGRAMers to look into it.

Editor

Dear Editor:

It appears the original message was returned. I would like to get two new MPC books. Please sign one for Del and the other for Bill. I have acquired to replacement notes as follows: 692 5 cents E 00451956 pos 57 BU, 521 10 cents E00664401 pos 84 VG.

Regards,

Del

Dear Del,

Thanks for the order and the reports. The reports have been added to the survey. The book order has NOT been entered. We will make an announcement in a few days about how orders can be made (we have a few surprises along that line).

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
