Planchette Madness(?)

By Joe Boling

I received a batch of position 8 notes today (7 January--this has been sitting awhile waiting for the gram to get back on the air) from Ed Hoffman. As I was examining them, I noted the proliferation of planchettes in some of them, such as the 591 $10 and 692 $20. I didn't remember having seen so many planchettes in MPC previously, so I started looking at the rest of today's notes from Ed and the other position 8 notes that I have (now totaling 38 pieces).

One new piece is an AU 461 5c. I was amazed to find NONE in it. After thorough examination, I eventually found only two blue planchettes in the entire note. I was also surprised to find a faint laid pattern in the paper--the first time I have noticed that in an MPC (it would not be visible in a well- circulated piece). I also have a 541 5c with only three pink and one blue planchettes in it. It makes one expect that eventually one would find a note with no planchettes; I wonder what kind of allowance was in the production specs to provide for that eventuality.

It is also plain that the planchettes are not uniform. Particularly in series 472, the planchettes are noticeably smaller than in other series, and many are not round. Some have wedges cut from them; others are crescents; and some are simply irregular. In series 591 and 692, I find some quite large planchettes that look like blobs instead of round discs. In series 461 I find planchette fragments and in series 681 fragments and variable sizes of planchettes within the same note. Obviously the next question is: when there are multiple printings, do the planchettes vary consistently?

I don't have enough pieces to say. And who cares, anyway? Since we have serial number data to define the several printings, do we need any physical information that might be discovered in the notes? Maybe not; at this time of night, my imagination is not running overtime devising potential new varieties in the MPC series. But five years ago we really had no clue regarding the extent of the multiple printings.

Someone who has stacks of notes (such as those collecting full position sets) should take some time to delve into these physical characteristics. If a pattern emerges that does not conform to what we already know, then there is probably something we DON'T know waiting to be described.

Stolen Material

By Brad Peacock

To all readers. On Jan 20th on the way back from the Houston money show, my good dealer friend Bob Reed stopped off in Baton Rouge to visit with his daughter. While he was visiting his daughter for a short time, some individual(s) broke into the bays of his coach and stole some merchandise. Whether they followed him from Houston or it was a spur of the moment theft I don't know. I don't have all the details yet. It appears to mostly have been jewelry and some coins. Bob has made up a list of some things that were stolen and I would appreciate everyone being on the lookout for his property. The list can be found here http://home.swbell.net/bp22/rrcoin/rrcoin.htm along with information on how to reach him.

Editorial

Both feature stores today are important. Well, I suppose they are always important. Anyway, as bad as the news of stolen numismatic material is, the Gram is the ideal place to distribute information about such incidents. While our subscription list is relatively small (about 375), we are FAST. Thanks for Brad for making the report and everyone for

Joe Boling is correct in that not much study has been done of MPC paper. I was going to gloat and point out that for the first time the paper manufacturers are listed in the new (almost finished) MPC book. Decided to have a look at how we did it and found that the included information is incomplete and inconsistently presented! Gad. The safest answer would be to remove the information that is there until we can provide it uniformly, but I will risk the criticism of a few to at least provide some of the info.

The paper for most of the early series was manufactured by the Keith Paper Company. Unfortunately this company seems to have gone with Forbes and Tudor Press to the scrap pile. Phil Goldstein did some research on Keith, but was unsuccessful. This is an area for possible additional research.

Mail Call

----------------------------------------------

Dear Esteemed Editor,

I have been pleasantly surprised by the number of articles and items about military financial pieces in Coin World newspaper, and in some other numismatic periodicals. One column that you might have missed is "The Joys of Collecting" by Q. David Bowers with the title of "How many are there?, Number of paper money dealers debatable" in the January 21, and another of his column's in the January 14 issue shows "Hawaii" overprinted on a one dollar note. The subject of the January 21 column is interesting but the illustration of a cover of "Paper Money," the official journal of the Society of Paper Money Collectors is more interesting. It has a man showing a woman his "short snorter." No, I am not being my usual obscene self. The article's title is "Remember Pearl Harbor, WWII Left Us Short Snorters." The journal appears to be its most recent issue and is dated November/December 2001. Did one of our Gramsters write this article, any see this issue, and was the article informative and accurate?

Howard A. Daniel III

Dear Short Reader,

So how many paper money dealers are there?

Editor

Dear Editor,

Dear Fred, I am off tomorrow morning for Japan and then Korea. Will be attending the annual auction in Atami, a hot springs resort south of Tokyo and Yokohama. This is a yearly event and the auction takes place for an entire day with dealers from all over Japan in attendance. From Japan I'll go to Korea and see what goodies can be found there. Will keep you and the gram posted.

Thanks,

Mike Cummings

Dear Mike,

Thanks for this lead to your reports from Asia. We look forward to insights and observations from the auction and your other adventures too.

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
