More Bad "Luck"

By Brad Peacock

The following is a letter posted by Jay Jackson - a good friend and fellow collector.

Luck ran out Howdy, y'all, Well, my string of luck ran out. I attended the Greater Houston Coin Club's show this past weekend and was hit by burglars. While I didn't lose a lot, it still hurts.

I lost a full set of Israeli 1955 notes in VF to AU condition, a German 50-mark, 20-mark, 5-mark, 2-mark, 1-mark, 10-pfg and 5-pfg from 1948 ("BANKNOTE" series) each in vf or so condition, a couple of BankDeutchlander 10-marks in xf condition, a couple of "devil's face" notes from Canada, one a Coyne-Towers and the other a Beattie-Coyne, a Philippines 1-peso from 1949 with "Genuine" in the underprint, a 1935 English $1 Canadian, 1937 Canadian $1, 10-cent US Fractional marked "Counterfeit", an Aussie 1937 crown (coin) and a 1903-s Philippine Peso. While not a lot of money in value, it still hurts and I feel terribly violated.

My van was taken also, but I'm fully insured for that loss. My friend and I went for supper Saturday night around 8 PM and when we got back at 10:30 PM the van was gone and our room was broken into. My friend lost a lot more than I did. Among other things, he lost a $5 MPC series 521 in XF condition as well as all his show receipts and a lot of cash. I guess I'll get over it someday. The cops seem to think the object of the theft was the van with the stuff in our room as merely an 'extra'... What hurts is that they probably tossed the paper money out the window and it is blowing down some Houston side street as if it were trash... Later, y'all... Jay in Garrison, TX reply, if ya' wanna, to "whohah1@yahoo.com"

The 521 $5.00 note Jay mentions in this letter was intended for me and was stolen before I got it. The serial number is E00448196E. Everyone be on the lookout for it because this should be an easy note to spot. Please jot down the serial number and be vigilant. If you deal or collect any of the other things Jay mentions in his letter please take a moment to make a note on what might be his. I hope he can provide me a complete list so that I may put a page on the net for him. The friend Jay refers to in his letter, Paul Garner, who was holding the 521 $5 for me also had numerous items stolen. Please click this link http://home.swbell.net/bp22/pgarner/pgarner.htm for a list and description of those items. He can be reached at pegarner@rocketmail.com and regular contact information can be found within the link along with a brief description of the events. This theft brings to total at least 3 friends who were victimized this weekend. Bob Reed in Baton Rouge (see last gram), and Jay and Paul in Houston. Our sympathy goes out to these guys, lets do what we can to help them. Its proven that material can be recovered - I helped find Ken Barr's notes which were stolen after the Memphis show. Ok gang, lets get these bastards.

Muscatine Art Museum to Have Camp Algona Exhibition including POW Scrip

By Steve Feller

As I write this a new exhibition on the World War II POW Camp at Algona, Iowa is being set up. I'm going to visit the exhibition at the Muscatine Museum of Art, next Tuesday (January 29) at around 3 PM for a special viewing before the exhibit opens to the general public. They will have many original artifacts from the camp including paintings, photographs, correspondence, drawings, cookware, music, suitcases, clothing, and of course scrip. The scrip has been donated by German POW survivors that have been contacted recently. I have been told that some of the scrip is from previously unreported camps as well. The person behind the exhibit is Michael Luick-Thrams an Iowa-born historian who is trying to bring World War II history to the people of Iowa and the Midwest. Michael has already visited dozens of Algona subcamp locations throughout Iowa and Minnesota. He has also interviewed well over a score of former prisoners at Algona from his home in Berlin. I will report back to the Gram after I visit the exhibition. The address of the museum is 1314 Mulberry Avenue, Muscatine, Iowa.

Are you tired of hearing about the work on the MPC book? You should be! This stage is always maddening. It usually turns into a computer file management nightmare—and this is no exception. At the moment, it is driving me crazy. I suspect that it will work out, but from this fox hole it looks like a long way to the mountain top.

Dear Editor, Do you have the capability to change the font in the gram, it sucks as it is.

BP

Dear B,

Well, yes, and no, and, heck, I really do not know. First as I explained a few days ago. During the time that we were not using Yahoo to send the Gram, some things were changed (Yahoo did not even ask us). Next, I do not know how it comes out on your computer. Finally, here is the real answer. Is there a Yahoo/computer expert out there who can help improve the Gram? Your Gram needs YOU!

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.
