We had cataloged a green one in the Angus Bruce collection; this pair includes an identically-designed red piece printed on the back of an English map. The fragment of the map present shows numerous farms, none with distinctive names (places such as Beacon Farm, Heath Stud Farm, Lordship Farm, Bungalow Farm, Heath Farm, and Hill House Farm). Also present are ???sur Mile Stable Farm, Lingay Hill, Round Course, Beacon Course, and Stands. It appears to be horse country; can anyone identify the part of England that is represented? The green chit has a violet box stamp containing HQ GHQ TPS. The first two acronyms we know; what's TPS? (Not Theatre Puget Sound, the web site where I post theater reviews several times a week.) A writeup that accompanied the pieces conjectures that TPS stands for Transport Service, but that does not ring true to me. The pieces were used in a joint British/Canadian club at a small post near Bielefeld. The 1/6 mark denomination was the equivalent of one penny sterling (40 marks to the pound). I hope the editor appreciates them. In the ephemera I have amassed over the years is a plastic 1989 calendar with a chit reprinted on the other side that uses exactly the same frame and counters as the Salzuflen pieces, but a different central design. In place of the rose and maple leaf representing UK/Canada, this other piece has a YMCA logo at the top and an inscription "token voucher for one sixth of a mark valid at Y.M.C.A canteen Bad Oynhausen only." One of these chits is illustrated in a fixed price list (if I recall correctly) published by Schoene several years ago. [I believe that Joe is thinking of the Schoene catalog of post WWII emergency mony by Schoene (a good book by the way)—Ed] I'll throw in that calendar for the editor (no charge). (He's going to be staggered by the price of the two Salzuflen pieces, anyway.) Does any reader have either of these chits, or other pieces denominated in marks based on sterling exchange rates? Something else observed in the same batch of notes, for anyone who is keeping track: Thailand, 1 baht MPC format, SB81r: A00086959 position 11 AU-Unc ($650); A00365011 position 46 XF ($500). Larry went on to describe that he had immediately called Henderson about these items. Henderson then reported that Joe Boling had visited and bought them. Larry was not happy about having missed out. I said that I wondered why Joe had bought them. I further clarified this thought by saying that it was not the kind of thing that he would like for himself.
