AMC Riddle Exposed

By Theo Van Elmpt

I have the following details on the Danish invasion currency. Printed on Portals paper by the BoE printing works in September 1944.

The following numbers were printed:

25 oere 2,000,000 notes

1 krone 1,000,000 notes

5 kroner 1,000,000 notes

10 kroner 1,000,000 notes

50 kroner 1,000,000 notes

100 kroner 1,335,000 notes

The initial intention was to print notes in units so they could be used for other countries as well. The War Office was getting a little tired of having to redo the same thing for each individual country. Not surprisingly, this idea did not take at all. These unit notes were designed and some printed.

The kroner notes are based on this design (99% the same). The unit notes were in English. The final notes, as we know, were in Danish. Initially a 50 oere and a 20 kroner note were planned. This plan was dropped. Instead a 100 kroner note was included in the series. The 50 oere note was scrapped. Hope this of interest.

Editorial

----------------------------------------------

It is really exciting to have the above report from Theo Van Elmpt. Theo is one of the great current numismatic researchers. His BAFSV book is in a class by itself. We hope that he will contribute regularly to the Gram. (Theo would you like a monthly, bimonthly, weekly, daily column?).

To top things off his report concerns one of our favorite mysteries—kroner AMC. This is the first new information that we have had on these notes in 20 years or so. Wonderful! And what great info it is too!

Sure printing quantities are only part of a numismatic story, but in many ways they are the first part! Now if we can find out where, for how long, and by how many troops the notes were used, we will be well on our way to understanding these notes.

Mail Call

----------------------------------------------

Dear Gram,

I’d like to thank you and the Gram for the excellent results I got through the "Forsale" section of the Gram. I bought a nice collection of MPC from a former military gentleman (now 89) which added quite a few notes to my collection and upgraded several more. I thought it might be of interest to show how easy it is to dispose of these duplicates through the Gram (the wonders of the computer age).

I decided on Wednesday to advertise the notes in the Gram. On Thursday, I put the list in the form of a letter to you, and e-mailed it late that afternoon. I’m not a real whiz with the computer so about 10 PM I checked my e-mail to see if you had advised of any problems with receiving the attachment. I already had five orders, along with two copies of the Gram. One of the orders actually beat the Gram to my computer.

Over the next two days, Friday and Saturday, I received eight more orders. Quite a few were for notes that were already spoken for. I shipped five of the orders by Saturday and the rest will go Monday. I "hope" the checks were mailed as fast.

Of the total notes offered (58), as of Sunday noon, forty-two have been sold. In less than two weeks, all transactions should have been completed and everyone happy. At least I hope so. I think the notes were accurately graded, and any can be returned for any reason, so we’ll have to see if I get any back.

As a suggestion to others, selling through the Gram is an excellent way of disposing of duplicates. When I bought the collection, I had to pay more than the Green Sheet bid, so selling the group to a dealer would not have been too economical. By selling in the Gram, I get my money back and other collectors get a good deal.

Thanks again. Also, I’m still trying to decide on Fest III. Will let you know.

Take Care,

Ron

Ron,

Thanks (very much) for the report. Yes, the Gram does sell. I made that pitch yesterday in the editorial. I guess that I should have waited a day! Your good results are particularly important when you consider that we have not been consistently offering material in the Gram so many people probably have not been checking. I hope that we can change that!

You really should come to the Fest. I can guarantee that you will have a good time! There is nothing like it!

Dear Joe [Boling],

In your column you mentioned a chit printed on the back of a section of map and asked if anyone could identify the area of the map. There's an area east of Cambridge (Just SW of NewMarket) that contains names similar to the ones you mentioned. Below is a link to an online map of this area. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2map?X=560500&Y=260500&zoom=4 >>

Russ,

Dear Russ,

I've already sent the chit to Fred, and did not keep a copy, so I'll let him compare the two.

Thanks,

Joe

Dear Gram,

Just wanted to pass on information on 2 items I have- one is a 1/6 Mark Token I guess similar to the others- this has text on top "Talbot House - Once of Poperinghe and Ypers" Then the value and "VALID ONLY AT / TOC H RESTAURANT / LUBBECKE" Uniface.

Second item: One Penny 75 x 65mm. At top, "1D CCG 1D", then "ONE PENNY" and 3 lines of text following: "Valid only at / EMPIRE CLUB / Bad Salzuflen" Printed in red, with yellow letters CCG- wonder what they stand for? Anyone hazard a guess, or definitely know?

Neil S.

Dear Neil,

Thanks for the information. However, PLEASE do not send things like this as an attachment to an email. It took me an hour to get the darn thing open! It was a real pain!

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
