Philippine Guerrilla Posts

by Herman Herst, Jr. Reviewed by Howard A. Daniel III

I recently acquired the July-September 1999 issue of the "Bulletin of the American Historical Collection Foundation." This bulletin is published by the foundation from their headquarters in Manila. Sara Collins Medina is the editor and the address is 15 Amsterdam Street, Merville Park, Paranaque, Metro Manila, Philippines. The article of interest in it for me was "Philippine Guerrilla Posts by Hermean Herst, Jr.

He starts off by describing the Spanish-American War and Emilio Aguinaldo, the first president of an independent Philippines. When the United States government arrived to claim the country, he led a rebellion against it. During the rebellion, his government started issuing stamps in late 1898 and their are five them illustrated in the article. When the Japanese Army arrived, another guerrilla war was started against them, and stamps were also issued. He writes that it was believed that the Manuel L. Quezon, president of the commonwealth authorized the stamps, but the order was placed by a Colonel Wendell W. Fertig, commander of the 10th Military District on Mindanao.

This colonel was also a stamp collector, so he must have been really enthusiastic about being involved in creating them. It is said they were printed in Australia, and maybe in Sydney, but there is no documentation about their manufacture. Does any Gramster have this information? One of the stamps is illustrated, and one on an envelope with "Confidential" and "By Officer Courier" is overstamped on it. Herman writes that the stamps were intended for use only by the military, however, some civilian mail was allowed with them. The stamps have "FREE PHILIPPINES" across the top; "GUERRILLA POSTAL SERVICE" in two lines across the center; "2" in the lower left and right corner, and "TWO CENTAVOS" and "SERIES 1943" in two lines at the bottom. Was Colonel Fertig also responsible for printing guerrilla notes? He writes that a Colonel Walter H. Adler (U.S. Army Retired) living at 265 Pasadena Avenue, Elyria, OH 44035 is seeking information about these World War II stamps.

This colonel did his research in 1979, so he might not be alive today, but I am sure one of you Gramster philatelists living in Ohio might check up on him. If he passed away, his research might still be in possession of his heirs. They might allow you to copy it, so it can be placed in a library available to others interested in Philippines history. The stamps also might be published in the next edition of "World War II Remembered." The author of this article lives in Boca Raton, FL and he was assisted by Bill Hornadge of Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia in writing it. There are no addresses for them, but I am sure one or more of you Gramsters can find them. Good luck and good hunting in finding these military stamps and more about them.

[Herman Herst was the most prolific philatelic authors ever. I also believe that he was the most entertaining. Unfortunately, Herman is no longer with us, he is at the great stamp show.—ed]

Editorial

----------------------------------------------

I received a wonderful package in the mail yesterday. I think that you will be as surprised about what it is as I was when I first learned of it. It is a book. A world War II book. Probably neither of those facts surprise you much. Now the title.

"The Pay Services of the Canadian Army Overseas in the War of 1939-1945"! Wow, is that amazing or what?! As so often with me there is a story to go with the acquisition. Joe Boling found this fantastic title on a book list about 10 months ago. As I recall instead of simply calling to order it, he took the chance of losing it by contacting me first. As luck would have it, the book was not sold when he did contact the firm. He paid for the book with his credit card giving my shipping address.

Then we waited, waited, and waited some more. The charge was processed in due course on his credit card, but no book. Many months and many inquiries passed. As you can imagine, I was unhappy. When I did not know that the book existed, it did not bother me to not have it. Once I knew that it exists, I wanted it and I wanted it fast. I also worried about the possibilities of finding another copy would not be good.

Well, the book finally arrived. This serves as the notice to Joe that it has arrived. He may have some comments about its delay that I do not know, but it is HERE and it is MINE!

The first amazing thing is the letter dated Sep 26, 1950 found loose in the book. Basically, it is a letter of transmittal of a review copy to the Toronto Globe and Mail. That is not too surprising. The letter is from H. T. Goodeve, president of (are you ready for this?) the Royal Canadian Army Pay Corps Association! Wow.

A google.com search of the internet yielded some useful information. Although the association no longer exists, it merged with another organization creating one of slightly broader focus.

It looks like this book and the successor of the RCAPCA might be sources for some great research. I will review the book soon.

MPC Gram:

I need some help please. I am a new MPC collector and am trying to locate an MPC pricing guide. Does the MPC world have a pricing guide similar to either the Red Book or Grey Sheet for coin collectors?

Thank you for you help.

Dear Editor,

Thank you for sending the visually challenged version of the gram. It was a treat!

SJ

Dear Editor

Kudos to you and your esteemed staff. Love the new type and size. I can actually read it without my glasses. Still receiving two copies, but hey, it's better than not getting one at all. A thought about the special edition book. How about a signed leather bound limited edition for those who attend the FEST! Produce only ten extra copies which could be auctioned off on ebay or the FEST auction with proceeds going to the scholarship fund. Might increase FEST participation and increase the scholarship fund at the same time. Regards Al

Dear Al,

Wow, we seem to have fixed a problem we did not know that we had. Furthermore, we did not try to do it!

You have a great idea there about the Fest auction. The number one copy of the special collectors’ edition of the new MPC book will be put in the Fest auction. Probably we will put some other copies and related items in too. The auction will be available for anyone to bid so it should be interesting.

All three are reasonable. If you can arrive early enough AND coordinate it well ahead, every attempt will be made to pick you up at the airport to save on rental cars. Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
