Special MPC issue of BNR

The March Bank Note Reporter is the annual MPC issue. This is an underground special issue. Krause publications does not recognize it nor even know about it! Do not tell them, but do not miss out!

It is the annual special MPC issue because we infiltrate the Iola offices and salt the editorial AND advertising desks with MPC news, features, and advertising!

This is the third MPC attack and looks to be the most successful. Material in all of the above categories has been accepted and there are still opportunities.

Here is what you can do. If you are a dealer, you can still submit an ad featuring MPC (call 800 573 0333, be sure to NOT mention special MPC edition). If you do not subscribe (gad) you must get the March issue. Call KP using the number in the Hot Contact List below. Finally, after the issue is out write to the BNR telling it/them how much you liked the MPC material in the March issue! Do not call it the MPC issue and be sure to wait for the paper to be published to write!

More on Herman Herst

By Herb Friedman

In regard to Howard Daniel's post about Philippine Guerrilla stamps, The article must have been a very old reprint. Herman (Pat) Herst Jr. was a good friend of mine when he lived in Shrub Oak N.Y. He wrote the book "Nassau Street." He retired many years ago and moved to Boca Raton. I think he must be dead now for a good 5-10 years. There are two basic sets of Philippine Guerrilla stamps. The one setthat is mentioned in the article, and another set from Cebu. I have done intensive research on both issues and there still is a lotof doubt as to their genuiness. They were prepared during the war, butwhether there was an actual need for them or it was a project to produce a valuable philatelic souvenir of the war is still debated. I think the latter is about 70-30. At any rate, the "Free Philippines" stamp sells for from $400-500. Youcan probably double that figure on cover. The four values of the Cebu stamp are a bit cheaper. They are usuallyabout $25-50 each, although a set of four recently sold in Ebay for $10. The owner had no idea what they were. I would go into this in more detail but it would take about 5000 words. [Herb, we look forward to the 5000 words—Ed.]

Medals of America

by Howard A. Daniel III

I recently received another catalog from Medals of America. This firm retails many U.S. and foreign military medals in various sizes; ribbons; commemorative medals; presentation cases; frames for certificates and many other items; dog tags; badges; insignia; ties; baseball caps; brass; patches; references and other items for all of the U.S. military services. Their address is 114 Southchase Blvd., Fountain Inn, SC, 29644 and telephone 864-862-6425. Their web site is www.usmedals.com. You can easily request a copy of their catalog and I am sure you will find something of interest in it.

The January 28 issue of "Linn's Stamp News" has an item; Military postal history election about the Military Postal History Society election. The item names all of the officer elected and they are Alfred F. Kugel, Robert Kinslet, Norman Gruenzner, Tony Brooks, Alan Warren, Leonard Lukens, Harvey Tilles and Alan Warren. Their next meeting will be during the April 5-7 Texpex show in Dallas, Texas. The society also publishes the "Military Postal History Society Bulletin." I believe many of their members might be interested in receiving the MPCGram and/or share information with us and we with them. The contact person is Robert T. Kinsley, 5410 Fern Loop, West Richland, WA 99353-9806.

Editorial

----------------------------------------------

Yesterday I wrote about the possibility of making false catalog entries because of altered/fake notes appearing on lists, in auctions, on the Internet etc. The problem of what to include, or, more correctly, what evidence to require for inclusion of an item is an interesting—and old question.

Only recently, a collector wrote repeating a complaint about me that he had heard recently at a show. The complaint was "Fred will not fix his book. I told him (Fred) that I used MPC in Africa and he will not change it."

Of course the collector who quoted the complaint to me may have gotten it wrong which is an example of the problem. Anyway, in this case, I pointed out that the MPC book lists MPC as having been used in Morocco. Africa I pointed out.

Suppose the fellow said that he used MPC in Algeria and we do not have any other evidence that it was used there. Do we list it because the collector says so? Because he recalls it?

Basically, the answer is no. It makes people angry sometimes, but it seems like the best approach but no two cases are the same. How old was the person at the time he/she used the notes? Was he/she a collector (and therefore likely to have paid more attention? Did he/she save any notes and if so still have them.

When was supplemental A and B yen issued? The arguments on this may go forever. In this case we get to what does issued mean?

When were supplemental franc notes issued? Obviously they had been issued by June 6, 1944. Equally obviously they had been issued to most of the invaders by June 5th. If the stocks to pay soldiers were distributed to pay officers on June 3rd, is that the issue day?

There is no easy answer to these questions. The final answer that I believe must be used is that every case is different and must be considered on its own merits. Not very satisfactory I am afraid, but the best that I can do.

Mail Call

----------------------------------------------

Dear Gram,

I have reread Phil's editorial about security for FEST III. I like the idea of an armed guard at the hotel on guard during the FEST. Whether Port Clinton has this available as an option is another question. Along the same vein, I have left a message with Collectibles Insurance Agency requesting information about insurance for the show. As an adjunct to having a guard, insurance if reasonably priced, would also seem like a good idea. There is also the possibility that the insurance rate would be very good for the event, as tease to get the attendees to sign up for the rest of the year for their collections.

I will let the readers know if anything develops about insurance for the FEST.

David

Dear Gram,

I have had my second list server go out of business. May I ask which service you are using for the MPC Gram? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,

David C.

Wow David,

Your question makes it sound like we are doing something right! Amazing! Well, as you might guess, there is good news and bad news. Basically, the list is maintained in a simple Yahoo email account. There have been problems, but mostly it has been satisfactory. We have tried some alternatives and are still experimenting at papermoneyworld.net, but the results are uncertain. Probably the list server that you want is more automated than we are using, but good luck and please let us know if you learn anything that we might be able to use!

Hot Contact List

Below is the BNR Press Hot Contact List. This list serves several functions. Obviously it is an outreach by the dealers listed for your business. Most of them buy and sell MPC. Others organize shows or publish periodicals. They have supported the new Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates with their advertising. They deserve your support and patronage.

Secondly, this is a draft from the book that participating dealers should check for correctness. Finally, dealers who are not on it and want to can still get their ads in if they act promptly. Respond to this email or call (419) 732-6683.

We are sorry if the format is a little messed up here in the Gram, we are not sure of how to fix it!
